I buy a gallon of milk at the grocery store (doesn't matter where) and put in the refrigerator, get up the next morning to have some cereal and open the refrigerator only to have a 1/2" of milk in the bottom of the refrigerator and milk running all over the floor and no milk left in the jug, WHAT A MESS. This scenario happens a couple times a year. Is anyone else getting bad one gallon milk containers? Why aren't the milk packaging people all over this problem? bjr

Look at the jug before you buy it. Chances are it's leaking in the store also or gets damaged in transit. I have seen a few leaking in the store but I do always check.

Most likely from sliding the jug on a rough surface. I've only had it happen after the jug was empty, and I was using it to haul water.

Seen quite a few leaky jugs in the store. I think they leak from rough handling when put in the case...

I can't stand the taste of milk that comes out of plastic.
If I can taste it, that makes me more worried about the plastic leaking into the milk, than the milk leaking out of the plastic.

I get my milk at Costco; they have two gallon jugs shrink wrapped together so there is an additional heavy plastic layer at the bottom. Also, they are displayed on slip sheeted pallets in the cold section so abrasion is kept to a minimum.
I did have one of the jugs develop a leak at the bottom seam, but it was after weeks of being re-purposed outside.

Post #5 is the winner today to get us off topic, congrats.

I can't even remember the last time I bought a gallon jug of milk. I buy the half gallon size and it's not unusual for half of that to sour and be poured out before we use it all. But I also can't remember a plastic jug of any kind that we've bought leaking. I do buy gallon jugs of distilled water, but never had one leak.

They leak occosionally. Costco here sells single gallons. Wife doesnt like their jug design.

I usually keep 6-8 gallons of distilled water in a chest type storage box, along with 4-6 gallons of antifreeze, among other things. On a couple occasions a jug of water leaked out over a long time without my notice. It did make a mess (rust) in the bottom of the metal box. Now I'm storing less distilled water.

costsco has a design to get more stuff stored in a single spot.

Never had a jug leak that we didnt drop onto the concrete when we came home. No problem with milk jugs here. NOw that i say that!!!! thanks

Exactly, I check every one I buy in the store.. I have never had one leak that I brought home, and I have seen some leaking in the store.. Probably damaged bottoms from sliding over grit.

I drink about 2.5 gallons of milk per week. I've had a few leakers, but really, only 2-3 over the last 10 years. I think the checkout person popped one of them dropping it in the cart funny, but the others were in my truck or trunk and I think that damage is on me.

I have found several leaky containers in the store. Figured I was lucky not to have milk leak into the carpet in my trunk in the middle of summer.... I bet that would smell fantastic! :p

Friend of mine went to the store, forgot and left a gallon of milk in the back seat...in the Summertime. The stench was horrible.

We bought a used SUV that a funny smell in the back floorboard. This is after dealer reconditioning. We asked about it and they said they would take care if it. Several trips back to dealer and still faintly there. I pulled up carpet and found traces of chocolate milk. Neither I nor the dealer could ever eliminate it totally. The measures we both took are too long to go into here. End result is I traded in the SUV. I am convinced if you get milk in carpet. Best get rid of car.

Several years ago we visited some family in Ohio that had a goat dairy. Upon leaving they gave us three gallons of raw goat milk, which we put in the refrigerator of the camper. Somewhere between there and Lexington Ky the fridge door opened. All three gallons had broke and milk ran the length of the camper.

By the time we made it home the smell was unbearable. Dad removed everything bolted to the floor (dinette, couch, ect), carpet and padding, then cleaned the subfloor. A buddy helped me replace it with Pergo hardwood laminate.

Milk is for babies. :) But a shot of JW or JD is probably better for them anyway. :drink:

I just make mine as needed. Almonds, water, vanilla, ice, blender.
Lactose intolerant.
Bovine milk's side effect - makes you cry like a baby.

Crying over spilt milk ? Yes, I have had some leak, but seldom. I drink a gallon in a couple of days, so it never gets old unless we are gone for 2 weeks or so. I can still drink the stuff up to 2 weeks past date. Kinda of reminds me of "grumpy old men" movie with the OLD milk !
