They inject polystyrene pellets in the ground under high air pressure. It's done at the 3'deep level and again at 6' deep. It creates openings in the ground to let the leach field liquid soak in the ground. Cleared up my problem areas in 2-3 days. No more nasty looks from the neighbor and no more smell.

I've been led to believe (by a county inspector) that a 'mat' builds up over time just below the tile. It's more like the top few inches become saturated with still decomposing matter. Apperently there are several ways now to rejuvenate drains fields without digging them up. There is something called 'oxygenating'. I can't find the info I had on it, but There are two outstanding sources for help. One is : http://www.askjeeves.com/ And :
http://www.refdesk.com/
The 'engineered' fileds (Adding a 4' level to your yard height!) usually runs past $12,000. Rejuvenation is definately possible. Just not too well advertised.
I hope this helps......

Anything other than water should never get to the leach field. The septic tank can't do it's job if too much water is dumped into it. A pool of water must be still for everything to settle to the bottom.

If you have any solid material carried into a leach field, decomposing or otherwise, the spetic tank hasn't been cleaned out often enough or too much water had been dumped in not allowing all the solids to settle or both.

I found the dreaded previous owner had replaced the outlet fitting in the tank with the wrong thing. It allowed solids to flow out into the pipes. I'm hoping the TerraLift method I used will help some. I know it wont clean the solid material out, but if you could have seen what did blow back into the tank when they injected the air, I'm hoping this helps my situation out for a couple of years.
