That is true. The DPF also needs to be super heated regularly to keep the particulate burned off. You don’t want a post emissions diesel for a grocery getter. You need to use them for what they are made for.
Emissions destroyed the diesel truck as a recreational vehicle.
And that's my problem. My pickup sits long periods because I was ALWAYS either in my big truck and out on the road.

So to have a new diesel that will only be run every second or third week, that tank of DEF would be in there forever before I ever burnt it off.

Like you say, they ruined the diesel for those of us that let them sit weeks at a time.

The only alternative for someone who wants to own a diesel for ”fun” or the joy of the way they drive is to buy a pre-‘08.
Deletion of a new one just seems problematic.

Funny thing was I had two friends with 6.0 Powerstrokes and they are the ones that NEVER change oil or do any maintenance and those trucks are still going and never failed.

I was religious with my maintenance, even got rid of the Motorcraft Gold coolant that was the biggest cause of the head gasket issues, but like I said I programmed it and it was just tooo much for it.

My second one in the F550 was also programmed but it was studded.

My 6.7 sits quite a bit. But when I run it it get to run for a bit. It is a 2016 and has 40k miles. I put in the 2 gal. containers of DEF so it stays pretty fresh. In the winter my DEF system pretty much stays off most of the time with frozen def. That has been the only codes that it has thrown and I just clear them when it gets warmer.

The problem with Toyota and Nissan trucks is they only offer 1/2 tons, nothing more heavy duty.
Nissan has an Titan XD that has more capacity than the Titan. The XD is a bigger vehicle and the frame is different. I don't need a F350, or a F250, anymore so a regular truck works. I feel for anyone that needs a F250/F350 size truck due to the current prices.

Anecdotal, but I've seen plastic components get brittle on vehicles after the last 20 years or so, maybe even in less time, but before they needed work. Snap fits, connector locks, even light structural components. Don't know where that will end in trying to keep a vehicle for decades. I guess they don't make plastic like the used too...
Yeah, the plastic gets brittle and breaks easily, even if one is careful. :(

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly the manufacturers are now making the insulation that covers the wiring in vehicles out of soy instead of rubber. That's resulted in huge problems with rodents eating the insulation off the wiring. The other day I was reading an article which stated that tire manufacturers, also to be more environmentally friendly, are experimenting with making tires from soy and other plant products.

So if one day you find your new tires have been destroyed, chewed up by woodchucks or ground squirrels or rats...now you know why. They taste good!

I was able to peel up the sill plates on my 2003 F450 a few weeks ago without breaking the plastic tabs. The metal clips were totally rotted but I saved the plastic!

I'm at the position where as I stated, the big trucks are too expensive to replace. I will fix my old trucks up until I physically can't do it anymore. The daily driver will get replaced as needed. Of course that means I need to keep a herd of vehicles. But that is also my particular vice.

That's been happening for decades. On occasion loggers have bone back to the woods after spring breakup to find their skidder tires have been chewed. At $5000/tire, that can get expensive.
