That video was great! There was a link to a scratch start tip too. All these tricks assume you have ten fingers and ten toes. I'm half expecting him to lean in and do something else with a dangly ear lobe.

You're running to hot, (burn through at each end), and not adding enough filler. Hence the undercut. ;)

Oooops. I looked and it is undercut. :ashamed: I bought 1/16 filler, it goes in pretty fast, prob should try 3/32".

Oh you're going to need more than that, a lot more! Monday morning head over to Air Gas, the one just west of I-5, and south of the West Seattle viaduct. I'll call in an order for you.;)

Just recently a buddy of mine attended an auction where a big shop was closing. He bought the whole cabinet of stainless electrodes and filler.
He kept most of the stick and gave me all the Tig filler...

Over 50# SS and a whole 3# pack of 1/16" manganese.

Oh. And he only wanted half of his winning bid from me. So I gave him his $12.50. :)

Didn't have time to organize yet. Threw it in the parts room for now.

I think you're trying to make too big of a weld. TIG welds are generally much narrower and neater than any other welds. 1/8" material for example requires a 1/8" fillet weld. TIG makes a weld like that easy compared to anything else. If you need to weld 1/4" TIG probably isn't the best choice depending on what you're welding.

Did some more practice welds. Some worked out OK. Some with filler, some not. I'm getting the hang of the scratch start. Just keeping it going period takes some practice and then running a smaller arc is more difficult. The arc can be pretty small and it still has a lot of heat. I numbered them to discuss, but can't remember anything about them, so that won't go anywhere.

7, 15, 18, 19 and some others are no filler. 25 is the best weld, it's offset like a lap joint.
