john deere tractor timing gears

I need to know how the timing gears marks go on a 1020 301r john Deere its a 70 something's model maybe 31hp

First you need to put the crank shaft to TDC for #1 cylinder on the compression stroke. Both intake and exhaust valves will be closed.
The timing mark for the cam shaft gear will be on a line drawn thru the center of the crank shaft and the cam shaft.
The timing mark for injector pump gear (if diesel and not gas) will be on a line drawn thru the center of the crank shaft to the center of the injector pump shaft.

Most likely there is a timing mark on the fly wheel as well, and it should be able to get the crank set correctly.

and in my experience on engines, there is some type of marking, dots, lines holes to align the gears or chain sprockets on the cam, and if your gong to do a lot of work I would suggest some type of manual that covers the info like that, either the John Deere factory book or at least a after market book,
there are a lot of torque specifications and so on most all bolts of the repair procedure,

but one will need to know where to set the fly wheel on that unit,

I would guess it is "0" on the fly wheel

Part # 4 in the drawing is for setting the flywheel to TDC. I think you reverse it and it will engage a hole when #1 cylinder is at TDC.
