Oh, the stubs were fine. They are compleatly fine and i am glad they were because i cant imagine a new one would be very cheap. Since the frame and PTO shaft were a little bent, it caused it to rock my tractor when i used it. Now that they are both strait again, that should have fixed my problem. Anyways, I just put my auger back together. I think it looks pretty good for a $30 auger. I cant wait to get my new JohnDeere decals on thursday. Then i should be compleatly done with the restoration. I still am wondering what the two pieces of steel were for? Shown in picture 6, I dont see the point of them. i put them back on so i wouldnt loose them but I know they definatly were not for hydraulics because the 4100 Deere it was on had no rear hydraulic ports. Does anyone know what they are for?

Sure look like add-ons, as they are not green, they have an oversize bolt holding them in place for the relatively thin metal, and I'd leave them for a conversation piece. :D Or toss them and paint over with green paint :)

Good job getting it back in like-new condition.

Just guessing on this, maybe someone's idea of an attachment point to hang it up inside a barn.:confused3: Hey, it might work. Great job on the reconditioning. Wish some of my implements looked that good....Dan.

JD3720,
That PHD looks like new now.

The handle I was referring to is 1/2" pipe if I recall correctly, I will measure mine to see how long it needs to be.

Those two silver clips you keep asking about are add ons, not factory. Maybe your neighbor could tell you why they were there.

Did you make the new gasket and replace the seal, oil?

I replaced the oil and a gasket and it holds oil pretty well. I am gonna have the auger home in about a week so I will ask my neighbor what it was for.

Looking good. It looks like you spray painted part/all of it. I've found over the years of redoing stuff that rattle can paints don't hold up real well to abuse and are pretty thin even with a lot of coats. I now just brush on enamel with penetrol. It really makes the paint film a LOT tougher and more rust resistant. It also makes brush marks go away. And by brushing it you can get it on a lot thicker.

Are you speaking of JD paint in a rattle can?
I've not had your experience with JD paint.

thanks for all the comments. I had no idea what the model number was since there really arent any labels left on it. Since my last day of school is on thursday, I plan to start working on it Friday. I will take out the old seal, replace the oil, and fix some other things like the slip clutch on my tiller, and maybe replace the oil and oil filter on my Yanmar. About the handle, the handel was probably in my neighbor's shop that burned down. I will probably get a new one. One thing that i am curious about is what are the two small silver pieces on metal on the frame for? They look like a guide to run a rope from the handel rea to the tractor seat. Oh, the Deere in the old shop was a 4100. Poor thing, it only had 500 some hours on it.:(

Looks like it is leaking out of the vent. Probably due to the way it was stored on it's side.

Which seal are you planning on replacing.

I would make sure it has enough oil in it for sure.

On that bracket - I wonder if it is there to slid something from the rear like a long piece of steel to help pull the auger down. I know before I added the hydraulic down force kit on my post hole digger - we would have to jump up and down on top of the gear box to get it to dig at times. Yes I know - dangerous, but we had to do it. The hydraulic down force kit was not cheap, but a lot safer.

I luckly didnt have to replace the seal, just a gasket. Yesterday I drained out the old oil and put in new oil. I didnt fill it all the way since under heat and pressure it expands and I dont want to blow a seal.
