Tractor
2001 6410
I have a 2001 6410 tractor that won't start all of a sudden. It was fine the day before. My first guess was the starter went bad, but after checking to see if the solenoid was getting power while turning over the key I realized that it wasn't getting power. My next step I checked all the fuses and swapped relays, still nothing. Which led me to the neutral start switch. I replaced it and still nothing. can anyone help me out please?!!!!

"won't start" Does that mean the engine won't turn over? or the engine turns over but the engine won't start?

:welcome: to TBN

Hang tight, as good help will come along.

@ beenthere the starter will not engage. when I turn the key to start it, it does nothing. Battery is only a month old and has plenty of juice. I'm getting power to the starter, but when I turn the key I'm not getting power to the white wire going to the starter solenoid

Sound like neutral start swith or relay doesn't have continuity. Is trans in neutral & pto off?

Yeah it's in Neutral and the PTO is off. I have replaced the Neutral start switch, ignition switch and the starter solenoid mounted to the block. I have no schematic or troubleshooting tree for the this tractor and been scouring the internet trying to find something that will help.

Cab or open station?

Starter relay for cab is on left side of engine.

Starter relay for open station is behind dash.

Thanks for correcting my MISTAKE. I guess I'll have to blame that mistake on my lack of knowledge of newer JD tractors & the JD parts catalog heading as it was listed under relay, starter but upon further investigation I read (OPPS) WIRING HARNESS, ENGINE STARTING AID
Thanks,Jim

I realized that I did replace the Air Heater relay. I didn't even notice the Reply on the left side. Thanks a lot @zebrafive. I will go check it out immediately

does anyone know how to access a wiring schematic for this tractor. I'm only getting 8.4 volts to the harness going to the neutral start switch.

Do the lights work, normally and brightly. On our OS 6200, they work regardless of the keyswitch. That might give some indication of connection integrity at the battery. Does the fuel pump work when the key switch is turned on? Usually when you hear the fuel pump, if you press the starter seitch for the preheat, the tone of the pump changes. Just little tests I would do before going farther.

Here is the starting circuit wiring. Hope you can read it. The quality is not great. What is the voltage to key switch when trying to crank?

I am with Tx Jim, sounds like a bad ground connection. Look for other grounds that the just the battery, but start there first.

I agree navigating JD parts is not easy.

I had this problem with my JD 5820 on last service, I found that it was hard to track down the real electrical fault. But in the end I found that a bird had started biulding a nice little straw come stick nest inside the dash just behind the fuse board. I new that the bird crap on my bonnet was suspect! So I cleared this out of there with great effort bent double like a crooked person and to my amaze I found that it solved the problem. Simply the straw and sticks were shorting out wires crossing behind in the birds densely packed nest and I also was so relieved to spend an hour to remove the cretters nest as this was so close to a fire that I was nearly sweating think about my barn going up along with the tractor. So do check for foriegn objects in the system. Other wise it good be a technical fault in the wiring such as a smoked wire.
