John Deere 301A
Hello, I am new to the forum and just signed up today because my son just called to let me know the tractor was broken. He bought it cheap and it has been working great for months, however today he was pulling it out of the barn and he said he thought the clutch blew but I don't think that is the problem since it moves in first and reverse. He is 300 miles away so I am going on a trip to help figure out what happened since he's gimped up from a broken ankle. A friend of his said it might be a pin in the shifter but I can't find anything specific in the manual he has. He also said the dust cover blew off or fell off not sure which, I also have reached out to some friends of mine that have older John Deere units but so far nobody has had that experince so I figured I would post it here in case anyone might have knowledge of it. Since I am going 300 miles I wanted to take as much tools that I can incase we need to take it apart.
Thank you!!

I can't comment on the specifics of what you maybe into with this repair, but I have a 410A with a bad reverser which has some similarities to the 301A and the vast majority of the minor fasteners are 9/16 with the odd ones being 7/16 or 1/2. For the big fasteners you'll be looking at 7/8, 15/16, 1, 1 1/8. Having a selection of wrenches and sockets will be helpful as some of the nuts and bolts are a pain to get at.

I would expect the 301A to be a fairly easy machine to work on, the 410A is an absolute nightmare of a machine, all the extra framing for the backhoe and loader make everything much more complicated.

Having the shop manual in hand would be highly recommended, especially if this machine has a reverser and you suspect the problem maybe inside of it.

I would recommended looking up Bundy Bear's Shed on Youtube. He does a lot of work on older JD tractors and he may have something up there that will help you.

Welcome to this forum.
As you mentioned JD industrial tractors with hyd reverser have a long history of a pin(item 1) failing in shift control mechanism on reverser valve on RH side of clutch housing.
If hyd filter hasn't been changed & trans oil suction screen hasn't been checked/cleaned recently I suggest to perform that task. Hyd oil needs to be drained to check screen.
