JD GT275 Won't Start!

/ JD GT275 Won't Start! #21
I have owned a GT275 for about a year now. Recently it intermittantly would stall. I discovered that if I moved the throttle to full choke that I could get it to run, albeit roughly. I noticed tht when it has the problem, the fuel filter was devoid of fuel and I could see air/fuel bubbles leaving the filter. I tried loosening the gas tank cap thinking that it was vapor locked, but no help. The fuel filter was raplaced about 5 running hours ago.

I let it cool down and it ran without any issue for 1.5 hours on a hot day. I turned it off to disconnect something and when I went to start it again it had the same issue.

This is what led me to your posts. Did you get it fixed?

Mine has an intermittant issue so it may be harder to find. Anyone have any suggestions?
Just a thought but have you ever replaced the fuel lines they may be getting weak and maybe the heat softens thems enough the collapse while its running and when you let it cool it runs again??

I have not replaced the lines yet, but it is probably one of my next steps. The lines should be cheap and fairly easy to replace.

The thing is that It was hot out the day that it stalled and was just as hot outside an hour afterwards when it started up just fine, and it ran it for about an hour and a half with absolutely no hint of an issue. I shut it off and went to restart and it had the issue. The issue was that it was running rough after I turned off the choke. By rough I mean that it would rev up and down very rythmically rather than having a constant RPM. From past experience I know that it would have had very little power (IE woudl stall under load) unless I moved it to full choke.

I am also considering swapping out the fuel filter even though it was replaced less than 5 or 6 runnning hours ago.

It is supposed to be cooler this weekend and would be a good time to check if it is outside temperature related, but I don't have any tractor chores to do.
I'll run it a little a few times to see what happens.

Come to think of it when mt gt242 was new it did that and they adjusted the float I belive and I have not had a problem since..It kinda sounded like someone was moving the throttle up and down real fast and was hard to start!!

I had the same problem a couple years ago. On the left side of the motor, just in front of the fuel filter is a rubber line; I think it is an air intake (I could be wrong). Anyway, with my son starting the tractor and keeping it choked, I covered the hose with my thumb. In about 3 seconds, the engine ran fine. I changed the filter and all has been good on that front.

I ran it for about 45 minutes this wekend with absolutely no hint of the problem that I was having. That being the pulsing rev up and down.

955er,
By the same problem do you mean not being able to start it? Also, what filter did you change? Air or fuel?

I replaced the fuel filter, the one with the resevoir. It can look clean, but holds a lot of gunk. When I covered the hose, it blew a clog. It always seemed to occur when I had been mowing for over an hour, and when the fuel tank had less than 1/8 of a tank.

I really believe you have a fuel filter/line issue. I bought my 275 in 1995 and have never adjusted the carb. And I have worked it hard.

Still sound just like the problem I had with my 345 20HP Kawi. After 2 years of futzing around, rebuild fuel pump, carb, new filters, solenoid replaced, shut-off timer replaced ... turned out to be the ignition module ($220 as previously stated). Sometimes fuel and electrical are hard to diag. I also had the no fuel symptoms. But after plugging in the new module all was well. It CAN be really annoying especially when I was plowing snow and it would die after 15 minutes, then I'd wait for an hour and it would restart. Good luck.

Help!! I also have a JD GT275 which I have starting problems with. It ran well last year but not now. Initially it would start but as soon as I tried to move it would die. sometimes I was able to creep slowly forward at low speeds. I suspected a fuel problem so I done the following
1) cleaned out the tank ( there was som crud in it, 2) new fuel, 3) replaced all the fuel lines, 4) new filter 5)cleaned out the bowl at the bottom of the carb. 6) blew out the carb.
While doing this i notice the carb bowl float initally was a little sticky but after a few cycle it seem to move free. The gas shut off solonoid/pin does not retact on its own when power applied , if depressed it does hold the pin down...is this normal. I saw somewhere a person cut the pin off in lieu of replacing it ???
After putting it all back together it is not running any better... with the throtle full it start but dies after 10-15 sec Something I can get to run a little longer by reducing the throttle to slow.
ANY Ideas???? I really cant afford to take it to a dealer

Does anyone have a troubleshooting or cleaning guide for the carb?? I have seen the Parts detail on the JD site but it does not say what the various items are.

Will it run under load if the choke is on?

I am having a similar problem with my LX279, 17 HP kawasawki. It was running fine while mowing then died like it was out of gas. Refilled tank and only took 1 gal, holds 3. Restarted and finished mowing. Next start it took 20 or 30 seconds to get running smooth, acted like it wasn't warmed up. Put it under load by starting mower deck and it ran fine for 1 hour. Next startup it acted cold, sputtered and died in about 5 to 10 seconds. It kept this up for 3 more starts. Held the choke on and it will run slow with choke on only. Let choke off it dies. Fuel pump was replaced 2 years ago with fuel filter. Fuel filter is clear but only shows 2/3 full with an air bubble at the top 1/3. I need some suggestions and help as to what to do now. ???
Mine will run with choke on, yes it will.
The first time it died while mowing, backed up without holding up deck start knob and mower shut off (reverse safety) I applied park brake got off to Pee, and eng quit like it ran out of fuel. Pushed switch down after adding gas , it started up fine. Problem started after that.

This is what I ultimately did that worked. I have no explanation, but it did. On the left side of the tractor, near the throttle, there is a rubber hose. I had my son sit on the tractor, start it with the choke on, and as it ran, I covered the end of the hose with my finger. I don't know if it is an air intake or what, but after a few seconds the engine kicked-up, ran with the choke off, and has been good for over a year. All I replaced was the fuel filter. It is normal for the air in the upper 3rd.

Again, I don't know how it worked, but it did.

I will look for a hose. but don't remember any in that area that are not connected at both ends. The only one I know of is a drain off for the fuel pump if it fails and starts leaking on the muffler, it is about 1/4" OD . Did you find the other end where it was connected to something?

If it was me I would replace the fuel filter and put new gas in a nd try it you can always take the bowl off if this doesn't work...but it may fire and save the hassle of messing with the carb at all!!???

You need to check and make sure the fuel pump is pulling gas from the tank. It could have went bad. I do this by removing the fuel line from the carburetor and sticking it inside of a clear container and cracking the engine over to see if it is pumping gas. If it is working then it is probably the electronic fuel shut off mechanism that holds the bowl on. Check this as someone previously stated by leaving your switch on and pulling the wire off and on to see if makes a clicking sound every time you do this. If it does then it should be working. Mine went bad and it was an expensive little part. I know it shouldn't be done but I removed mine and replaced it with a regular screw from another carburetor that I had and just left the wire unhooked. Do this at your own risk as I am sure they placed these for a safety reason but mine works fine that way.
