I have been looking for the most hp in the smallest package, primarily for chipping. The local JD/Mahindra dealer just advertised in stock 790s for $13,899 which puts it into the same price range as the Mahindra gear 2615.

Is the 790's 3ph really maxed out, as JD info seems to read, at 815 lbs at the 24" point ? Chippers in the 6" range run 600 -900 lbs and even a Kubota 7510 can lift 1300 lbs.

The 2615 lifts more and has a 48 month 0% that makes a backhoe affordable.

Thanks

You shouldn't have a problem with 900 lbs on the 790.
At 24 PTO HP, I'm not sure if the 790 have adequate power though. Same applies to the Mahindra (23 PTO HP on a gear tractor). I'm sure the Kubota wouldn't.
BTW, the Mahindra weighs about 2350 lbs with an advertised 3PH lift capacity of 2200 lbs. I'm always skeptical of advertised capacities which list the tractor weight and 3PH lift about the same. You may be able to lift that much statically, But I'd wager you couldn't transport it safely.

I do suggest you determine the minimum HP requirements for a chipper that can handle 6" material (if you plan on chipping trunks that big).
Make sure you've got weights on the front before you try to lift that much weight though. I installed my ballast box before the loader once...guess what happened?

The advantage of the 790 would be resale down the road a few years as well as parts availability. That might be important to you, or it might not.

What chipper are you going to use? My 790 runs a 6" Jinma chipper very well.

Are you familiar with chipping? If not, search the posts here on TBN about chipping. The 790 is about maxed out weight wise with a 800# Jinma on the back. Mine is mounted with an i-match which puts the weight another couple inches farther away. You will needs lots of weight in the front. Ideally, the best ballast up front is a FEL with a couple hundred # of wood in it to be chipped as the last load.

With any chipper on a small tractor, keep it low to the ground when moving and don't even think about going ACROSS across any hill. Your center of gravity will be higher and allow you to tip the tractor easier than without a chipper attached. I prefer to drive down a hill in forward and keep the chipper uphill. That way when it come time to go back up the hill, I do it in reverse with chippers weight uphill from the tractor. You could get into a situation where the tractor wants to do a wheelie if you have a 800# chipper hung out back and start up any hill more than 10-15 degrees going forward. The tractor would tip back, the chipper would hit the ground and you would have a bad day ahead of you.

The 790 has about 24 PTO HP. you will need to run at least 2400RPM to get satisfactory results when chipping anything over 4-4.5" HP is more important here than lift ability. You will not want the bottom of the chipper more than 6-10" off the ground anyway.

Does that $13,899 include the chipper? If not, it seems high. We just paid $11,900 for a 790 MFwd with R1 tires and six suitcase weights for the front. The six weights constitute 250 lb, which, as stated, you'll need. Oh, and we financed the tractor thru JD credit, 36 months at zero percent.

And the weight of the I-Match reduces the total useful capacity. How much do you think the i-match weighs?

Thank for the comments. All my chipping has been with a towed 6" rental chipper but now I want to go further in the woods plus dig stumps and move the larger pieces.

Salsco and Wallenstein show 25 and 24 pto hp as minimum 6" but I want the larger opening for branches and not for 6" logs. All spruce, pine, or scrub, I would burn everything over 3-4". May need to feed at a slower rate or spend more time trimming before chipping.

That 790 price of 13,899 includes the 300 loader. Most of the land has a gentle slope or is flat with only one path having a short steep pitch off a filled area, and that has more shallow, but longer paths around it.

Started off looking at the L3400 but didn't like the larger size and step/fender flex when I climbed on. The 790/2615 lower price pays for a 4" chipper and most of a 6" chipper.

That's a good price for the 790 and loader. If you buy it, I suggest you get the tires filled for stability.

Thanks Roy, I am attracted to the price also. Just frustrated with Deere for reducing the 3ph capacity to push buyers to a bigger tractor.

I wonder if they are on sale because a better version is coming out.

You could ask the dealer about the 790 being dropped, but it's still on the Deere web site and my local dealer stills sells a pretty good number of them.

Now, Deere and Yanmar (who builds the 790) have ended their affiliation, so I suppose the 790 will be dropped sooner or later (or production shifted to China...which will probably ruin the reliability).
However, parts should be in good supply for many years. FYI, the 790 is almost the same as the 670s and 770s, so there's quite a few of that basic design in usage. Too many for Deere to not support the owners. At least, not if they want those owners to look at another Deere for their next tractor.

As far as the price...well, good question about why it's as low as it is. Again, ask there dealer...but don't look a gift horse in the mouth too long.
