Is the 4200 rockshaft control valve serviceable? Dealer say's it's not and wants about $1000 to replace it. My 3 point will drop and bounce right back up. I was going to try to fix it myself but I got cold feet and took it in. I was hoping it could be cleaned out.

I started a thread awhile back and I got the impression I needed to remove the valve and clean it out. I'm looking for confirmation that I can in fact simply remove and clean the valve. Dealer charged me about $300 to replace the rockshaft piston ring however that did not fix the problem. I took it back the same day and now they say it 's the rockshaft valve.

NO repair kit listed in parts and I don't see $1000 price tag either. LVA15586 Hydr./Pilot Control Valve - ROCKSHAFT CONTOL VALVE, HEMA ADD 515.60 USD I would think hiccupping(lowering/raising) 3 pt might be RS piston seal not control valve

The part is about $500 and $500 labor is what I was quoted. The RS piston seal was already replaced by the dealer but that didn't fix the problem. They charged me $300 for that. Now they say the RS control valve is bad and needs replaced.

$500 to R&R rockshaft control sounds waayy too high to me. I'll bet JD flat rate doesn't pay near that much to R&R valve. I find it difficult to understand that a dealer would charge $300 to R&R something as simple as a RS piston seal.

PS: I'm a former JD dealer service manager whose has had a lot of experience with JD flat rate manuals.

Thank you Tx Jim. I also thought $300 was a bit steep for the RS piston and the RS valve cant be much more than 1 hour so $500 labor is very hard to believe. You being a former JD service manager do you have any idea if the RS valve can be removed and cleaned or does it have to be replaced?

I'm not familiar with later model JD tractors as I left dealership in '87. Since no parts breakdown is listed in JD parts catalog my guess is valve is non-repairable(2nd photo) but I would think a novice mechanic could easily R&R the valve. I don't know what function ball(parts key 18) does but for 40 cents I think I'd replace it. I checked on the price of the relief valve(parts key 13) and it's $93.

R42849 Ball - BALL,STEEL ADD 0.40 USD

Thanks Joe. You were kind enough to send that to me back in November when I bought the tractor. I did find a transmission service bulletin that reads:

NOTE: If fitting screen is found to be dislodged, the rockshaft control valve must be removed and inspected for debris. See your John Deere dealer if this service procedure is required.

So it looks like the valve can be cleaned. I will hopefully be pulling the valve this weekend to clean it out. If anyone has any tips on cleaning the RS control valve please let me know. I'm assuming solvent and blowing it out with an air nozzle will do the trick. At least I hope it's that easy.

The dealer installed the updated line with the new inline filter. I noticed this morning that they installed the filter backwards. I will flip it around tonight to see if that has any affect.

Did they (dealer) say anything about the original screen being dislodged when they installed the updated inline filter? The problem, IIRC, was that screen becoming dislodged and ending up messing up the control valve.. either sticking in there or the metal parts scoring some of the important surfaces. Thus the comment "the rockshaft control valve must be removed and inspected for debris".

And if the new inline filter is indeed backward, take some pics and notify the dealer before changing it.

I installed the filter correctly and the problem seems to have been resolved. No bounce and no bleed down when engine is running.
