My slip clutch not engaging on my baler. It works for a while then dis engages. The pto is 540 and works great on the tractor. It will spin for a while, engage, work a bit, then disengage again.
What to do?

Which slip clutch? Main drive slip clutch? Pickup slip clutch? Auger slip clutch?

If it's the main drive slip clutch, there should be a slip clutch and an overrunning clutch (sprag clutch) assembled in one unit. The problem could be in the overrunning clutch.

It is the main slip clutch on the pto shaft.

Springs are rusted and shot, clutch places are long gone and oild from the gearbox has seeped onto the surfaces. There is usually room for adjustment. Depends on how many times its been taxed by th eplunger stop.

Maybe time to clean it up and replace some parts.

The " main clutch " has two parts to it. One is the sprag clutch that allows the baler to free wheel when the pto stops. The other is a spring loaded clutch that is ment to take the shock of the plunger stroke, or slip if there is a sudden stop. PTO has to come off to work on either properly. If it is the sprag clutch, the front of the whole clutch unit comes off, and there are two sprags inside. Just check them over, if some thing is wrong it will be very obvious. If it is the friction clutch. Disassemble and clean up first. Readjust and try it out. Let us know how you make out.

It is the sprag clutch springs. What can be used for replacement. Don't have a JD dealer with in 75 miles so It would be a couple days to get them.

You can buy adequate springs at any hardware store, Home Depot or Lowes, etc. They are about the same thing as a small valve spring. Head out to an auto junk yard. There are all kinds of springs in there: door springs, hood springs, valve springs. You don't need all 10, just enough compression to hold the clutch pack together.

I frequently call my JD dealer (D&G in Milford, Howell, Corunna, etc.) They will UPS them next day for just about nothing.
