They don't say that the 3/16" weld will be cold and weak just that it will weld it:stirthepot:

The Miller calculator says it takes 140 to 150-amps to weld 1/8-inch steel.

I know with the MM252 I almost always use the next up settings as I find the reference card on the front of the welder too cold for my taste.

You mean the interesting reading where they recommend 70S-3 and say it is common and economical? :mur: Or where it says the welder is rated for 90 amps at 20% duty cycle?

I find it interesting that Miller sales says the machine can weld up to 3/16-inch thick steel. And output range is 30 to 140-amps. But the Miller calculator says it takes from 140 to 150-amps to weld 1/8-inch steel.:confused2:

Seems I remember the common caveat goes something like this "...with proper prep and multiple passes.."
Not very specific and leaves too much grey area to quibble over.

Personally, the part I generally dislike is when any manufacturer lists the duty cycle of a 140 amp machine as 20% at 90 amps and drawing 20 amps 120v circuit.

But often they don't list the duty cycle or amp draw at 140 amps.

Some I've seen list the max output at 10% duty cycle and 28 amps draw.

Most 140 amp welders really ARE about 90 amps. They can spike up to 140 amps, but most of the time you will see them running on a meter around 90-110 amps. Ever wonder why there is no digital meter on these things?
