I am having a HARD time finding an insurance company to insure me if I put a wood burning stove in my pole barn for heat! My current company (American Family Insurance) will not insure and I haven't found any other insurance company that will do it. Any suggestions or companies that you use? I live in Northern MN (near Duluth).

I think Farm bureau will allow it if its not a primary heat source THey wont allow an outside forced air one at all.

We're you ever in the military? I have USAA and they've been great, I asked about putting a woodstove in my garage and they said no problem.

It's a little different than a barn but it would be worth a phone call to them.

Did they say why?

Said there has been too many pole barn burns and they only insure if there is a solid (no doors or windows) between the wood stove room (workshop room) and any flammables. Like if you divided pole barn in half. They did say some people might be "grandfathered" in since the change.

I was not in the military. Is that a requirement for them?

Is it a matter of certification or is it paranoia due to the number of 'idiots' out there?

Because wood heaters are practically the norm here in rural Tassie (& colder rural regions of Australia), all that the insurance companies require here is an annual Chimney Sweep certificate. The chimney sweeper will also point out anything that's wrong with your system.

I've found that most institutions; be they banks, insurance or local government; are ruled by the almighty COMPUTER! If the almighty COMPUTER says NO, then the drone simply gives up & says, "No". However there is usually an option for them to over-ride the almighty COMPUTER if you've shown that your system is safe & certified.

Of course, you need to be talking with someone who is intelligent enough (or brave) to exercise the over-ride option.

Best of Luck.

Do you need insurance on your house/property?

I know that not having insurance opens one up to a certain amount of risk. However, keep in mind that the insurance companies are FOR PROFIT agencies, and in most cases very profitable, with a lot of employees.

State Farm decided not to insure one of my vehicles, so I found an "independent" insurance agent who set me up with Auto insurance.

You're absolutely right, insurance is a business and a racket at that. I had a uninsurable vehicle situation a while back. I knew my insurer personally and they directed me to an independent insurer. However I directed myself to the yahoo that knowingly sold me a salvage auto and flat lied to me. We argued for hours, he finally gave me back my money :) Does your insurer have to know about the wood stove? Or maybe they could protect for everything but a wood stove burning the joint down? It's all about the fine print for them.

I have the same problem here in Michigan. I found no ins. Co. That will insure a building with a solid fuel stove if it is detached from the house. My plan is to put the stove in anyway. If the wood stove burns down my shop it will be my loss. If I have to call in my agent due to a theft, storm damage etc. I'll move the stove to the woods for a few days. I've never known anyone with a proper chimney that was cleaned regular and burned dry wood who had a fire get away. Now burn green wood or stick the stove pipe through the wall and you can have problems.

Did I say argue for hours? Really for a bit by phone day after day that equated to hours. Still gets my blood pressure up and it was years ago and under 2k dollars. Sorry for the rant, good luck with the insurance.

Here I go... We can probably partially thank the epa and alternative energy tree hugging liberals for this. I have heard of some recent legislation (don't know where, surely never passed) that would BAN wood burning stove completely! Believe it or not, there is still folks out there that rely on wood burners for heat in winter because THAT IS THEIR ONLY OPTION!... End rant

Yes, either yourself or an immediate family member (parent or child who already has USAA).
