Maybe just maybe some companies are feeling pinch by inventory not moving,or attraction new costumers???...maybe any tool causes sweat to run prices are fair.

Not wishing to get thread locked on grounds of politics . . and the disaster waiting to happen that is the Euro . . but the underlying figures are worse (for Stihl).

According to Triacom: Archive in 2001 $1 = €1.06, so $149 earned €157 for Stihl.

Today, $1 = €0.81 so $149 will earn Stihl only €121.

This is why, if I am allowed to say so, I think Germany may be the first country to drop the Euro.

However, I would just warn that sometimes Stihl model numbers that are adjacent denote a difference such as a rigid vs flexible drive shaft.

Seems like a lot of items at the grocery are smaller packages for the same price.

You can bet somewhere along the line that the quality has went down. Companies have to do something negative if they are staying at a price point. Maytag did this to the point of their demise.(too many problems with untested/inferior product. Left their core business in pursuit of price point). I would bet that that $149 machine today isn't the machine of 9 years ago.

I don't know, it may be better. Some, not all, of the stuff I've bought lately is far superior to the stuff I bought 10 years ago. I do buy higher end when it makes sense.

Batteries and tires sure have gone up..Castrol GTX $4 someting a quart...Yikes.

I was just talking with the owner of my local Stihl dealer last week. We were talking about carbs and ethanol. He mentioned to me that recently Stihl bought the company that made their carbs in order to have better control in getting carbs that don't have problems with ethanol. Now that they own their carb supplier they have dropped the price of the replacement carbs in half (about $60 retail for a complete carb). According to the shop owner, the new carbs have been great with no problems at all. So it is possible Stihl has improved profit with acquisition of the carb supplier and not had to raise prices to get extra margin. Just a thought.
