IH side delivery rake- problem

Hi,
I just pulled out an old IH ground driven side delivery rake that I got for cheap awhile back and found that the raking action is only intermittent when going straight ahead. The bars circulate and do the raking action then stop- then start then stop. I think the lever to change from free wheeling to rake is as far as it goes?. Any suggestions?

Have you drained the oil in the gear box? Maybe some teeth are broken off??

Nope haven't checked that yet. I have never run one of these rakes and was wondering if this was how it might operate? Wishful thinking I know.

When going in a straight line it should turn all the time
