Identify welder wire

I have a partial (almost full) roll of .030 or .035 wire that the information on the side has come off. Is there an easy way to identify if solid or flux core? I am not that experienced a welder to tell by welding unless it would be by the amount of slag to clean off. Will solid wire without using gas still be clean? hjt

take a piece and see if you can bend it 90* . If it snapps off it is some kind of cored wire.

Dan I use to get the biggest kick out of non welder types on the job site. They would grab a piece of Innershield wire that one of the welders through on the ground, and try to use it as tie wire!:laughing:

Heck, I'd hand them a piece if they asked for tie wire.
