Hyd. Remotes ??

Okay Guys . It's taken me a while ,but I've got another goofy question /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif ( It's probabably in the wrong forum to boot ).
I see as an option hydraulic remote valves on most makes of machines . Also some are 3,or 4 way (detent ) Or a similar term . Would one of you kind folks please explain to me what they are ,and do ? Thanks for bearing with me . I'd rather learn here than Spend a lot of $$$$$ to find out I could done a better job of setting up a Machine I'll be living with for a while . All the best , John
