Do you really want to open up that can of worms....

That all depends. Are they pink worms or red wigglers. I want to catch some shell crackers and they will not hit crickets for *****. Did I get off-topic? There is soooooo much to all of that. Way more than grease or dry or thread size, or percentage of thread, type of metal, condition of metal, temperature, humidity, I mean shell crackers can be mighty finicky sometimes. So yeah, let's close the can. You know my bush hog manual for my 3815 mentions both dry and lubed torque. 450 vs 600, I actually read it this time instead of guessing from memory. I bought a killer impact wrench, 1 inch off of Amazon. My other 1 inch would not touch getting my stuck nuts loose. This bad boy spun both me and the nut off. I used it to put it back on. It claims 4280ft.lb/5800N.m instead of the 1900 my other one inch claimed. And I doubt it can pull that, but man it felt like twice the other one inch. And for 230 bucks it's worth it to me. It was also twice as heavy and the shaft was twice as big. I was really impressed. And you better have 1/2 inch high flow fittings to get what it needs. I can post details if someone wants to know. I think it was called a mophorn.

I found out that the proper torque is 150-180 ft lb. Bobcat seal kits come with thread lock on the nuts. Any idea what thread locker should be used in this application?

Ryobi battery impact. Set it to 3. Done.

The reason that I am looking to see what thread locker is used is because I bought a Stens branded seal kit and the nut in that kit does not come with thread lock. From the pictures of the Bobcat part, it appears it has thread locker on it.

Blue would do, red would work but require heat to release if the nut ever had to come back off. If it were mine I would use blue.

Why would one add friction to this ttype of nut installing it dry? Only reason they ever come up with that is they cant get the chimps to properly oil the threads. Snap ON wrench book of old says,,,, all values for clean lightly lubed threads. One thing on older equipment,,, was obviously working when hand tight, this simply holds the thing on. Its not new from factory, we would simply hammer this on hard with a hot 1/2 air gun.

When a bolt is dry one never knows why it stopped turning, friction, pressure etc. John Deere has a tech book worth reading over this, a ;lot to consider but we spray every bolt we install, eliminated loosening and seized problems. Secondly,,, one of the m,ain reasons they went to dry,,, this is rather new actually,,, but is the advent of aluminum wheels, same for the torque wrench on them. Oil on the faces of them allow the nut to act as a wedge and fugg up the hole. They really get tight and impact makes it worse. Its not loose is the problem byut too tight and they are stuck, ruins the wheels.

Blue thread locker - it has to be applied to oil-free threads, no?

Then, should the torque spec be the same as lightly oiled threads?

If the manufacturer calls for Loctite and then torque to X ft/lbs then that is what they intended for correct assembly. It really is as simple as that. There is no need for discussion of oiled/dry threads or what John Deere thinks would be appropriate. Yes, Loctite must be applied to clean, dry threads, so Bobcat obviously thinks the torque should be set with un oiled threads.

Ok lets try that again. Not only what Bobcat or Deere thinks. Rather, in general:

When thread locker is applied to clean dry threads, and looking at a chart of recommended torque for specific bolt sizes - which row in the chart below applies?

Maybe a little reading....

Thank you! That is a must-read.

For anyone who just wants to see a half-vast summary of the article:

Chris Manger of Loctite Western Australia ... results of the Loctite testing clearly confirmed that different brands and types of thread-lockers provide very very different amounts of preload/stretch when the bolt is tightened
Some (Many) thread-lockers simply act as an unreliable and non-predictable lubricant and most provide unpredictable, non-constant preloads. ... can and will result in excessive preload resulting in broken bolts if you actually tighten them to the required torque

...we were advised that the Loctite range of Thread-Lockers are designed to simulate as close as possible to a dry bolt torque condition.
and:
  • Zinc plated bolts require 40% more torque than Black (Unplated) bolts
  • Cad Plated bolts require 25% less torque than a Black (Unplated) bolt.
It's well worth it to read the entire article. Again, thanks.

Lost in the translation: 600 Nm is 442 Ft-lbs. That makes more sense to me.
