Actually a germ of substance along with the wise-guy comment. Slowing the rotating speed of one wheel serves to increase the speed at which the other wheel rotates. If you're not prepared for it, that can make for some pretty sporty turns if you're bushhogging, etc.

Actually true. Anybody here forget the brakes were split when they put a old high CG farm tractor in road gear and then tried to stop? Not fun (though it didn't flip, thank goodness). I always check the brakes now.

However, being able to brake each wheel separately is really useful, especially with a bigger machine.

I just wish the BX1500 had them. On hillside use you learn that the front wheels arent turning fast enuf to assure they pull in turning. The sliding due to them being pushed will foil an uphill turn.

You can't lock the brakes together on some of the old tractors which most of them barely had any brakes.

I had a neighbor with old AC tractor with split hand brakes. That was a fun tractor to stop on a hill
