Thought some might find this interesting. I heard a dozer working outside this morning and didn't think much of it because one of my neighbors has one. However, this time, the noise was a little closer.

Turns out, the owner of the property immediately east of me decided to tear down a small farmhouse on the property. The track loader made short work of it, reducing it to a pile of rubble in about 15 minutes. This was fun to watch, so I can only imagine the enjoyment the operator got out of it...

We've had several "tear downs" in our neighborhood... figured when we left, our house would be the same... not sure about that now a days...

Always thought you could sell tickets to run the trackhoe... $100/5 minutes

A cousin of mine has our great-grand parents house that needs to come down before it falls down. Not sure about the asbestos situation - he's afraid he can't afford to do anything with it and it's too far gone to repair. +1 on the trackhoe/dozer tickets !

I do know how lucky I am as this is how I make my living. Last winter I wrecked 750 houses on a airforce base 10 a day.

Be glad they got the address right!

Watched one of those news shows like 20-20 and they showed where a contractor got the address wrong and demoed the neighbors house.

Could you imagine??? I was struck over the stupidity and could not imagine coming home to an empty lot.

I've seen operators missjudge the house they were tearing down and end up in a basement  It is a great way to releave stress just have to be carefull.

Quoting the operator:

"Basement ??? What basement?" (no one was hurt)

I've seen them tear down hundreds of houses like this since Katrina in the New Orleans area. It is amazing how a skilled operator can turn a house into matchsticks in a few minutes.

Yes, there have been quite a few wrong houses torn down also resulting in lengthy civil suits.

There are only about 20,000 houses left to tear down now, 5 years later, with red tape still holding up the demolitions.

Where? Trying to think of a NorCal base that had demo done.

I was by the old base outside Monterey a few years ago, and saw vacant neighborhoods. Too much asbesto's was the story I heard. That was Army or Marine.

That was at Travis AFB, in Fairfield. Many had fire damage, and the rest asbestos. There are 150 slated to go at Beal starting later this month last I heard. I did all the clearing at your local casino.

Do they remove the asbestos before demolition? Does an abatement contractor do it?

Or do they just let the dust fly?

Thanks,

Interesting; had no idea that was happening. I have only been there twice, once to the museum and once on a C-17 training flight where the crew took Boy Scouts along.

Why did they take the houses out? Was fire from training?

Ah, the casino is one exit up from me, and less than a mile as a crow flies.

There was always abatement done ahead of the demos, they are very strict on that around here. The houses were fire damaged from a fire that swept thru the housing tract several yrs ago. We removed every thing streets sidewalks and underground utilities, power poles, nothing but bare ground when we left. I have never been to the casino since my work was completed.

Niether have I. I have been in the casino parking structure; our FD does some training there. I have rappelled from the top of the parking structure. Rapelling from 100' in full structure gear is interesting :D

Over in Czech, they typically take down houses with explosives, that's a lot of fun to watch too. I have seen a whole block go. First all the houses seem to do a little jump and than it all crumbles down in a cloud of dust.
