And they don't see to good behind themselves....

...so.... if your going behind one, either give a wide berth -or-
leave your hand on their hind quarters reaassuring them your not going to spook 'em. Maybe talk to them too.

Call us crazy, but we went with mustangs! Wouldn't have any other horse now. Funny thing is, when looking at your guys "tame" horse pictures, all of them are wearing halters. That tells me that the horse is winning! Here are our two mustangs and wild burro, all from the BLM.

Gosh love this post!! YOu sure have gotten some great advice. Definitely buying a horse isn't like buying a puppy!!

As far as the halters on horses in the pasture, well its just not safe. Some use leather which will break under pressure, but thoughs nylon ones won't bust should a horse get caught up some where.
I think someone was thinking your horses were hard to catch, which may not be the case at all.

Anyway I love my horses; yes its hard work at times but sure do enjoy them all!! I have 6 colors and 6 patterns on my place; makes them easier to spot.:D ( pun intended)

I don't know if anyone has mention about leasing a horse. He or she could be used for lessons, 4-h, saddle club like someone mentioned; its best to ease into a great responsibility of a great animal. Definitely find some you can trust, never go it alone.

Question: Are you folks using photobucket to post pictures or straight from your computer? Yes, I'm new here;)

Your heart is in the right place so keep your dream going!

Best Regards
AppyGirl

Hi and welcome Appygirl. I make my pics small in my cameras menu. Then I save them to the desktop and upload them. There are photo resizing tools free for windows XP. Its kisted with the powertoys. Hope you can post some pics.

Also, this is the best place for advice as you have read. Wheater its about tractors or different topics as in the rural living thread. Great people, again welcome. EL.

For those of you who haven't seen our "rock" I attached a picture of it. I'm sure you could have a memorial sales place add a horse head instead of a deer head. Great way I think to dress up the enterance to your "ranch". We have a bunch of whitetails in our yard, but then again we feed them. But if we do get a horse, the deer head goes to my son, and we'll get a horse rock.:D

I could tell you all my horse knowledge in under a minute and still have time fetch a beer and a bag of chips.:D
I do, however live with a horse nut. I built this little barn for her 29 year old mare for its "retirement", unfortunately the old girl gave up a few weeks prior to the completion. After the loss of her horse, we decided to put something in the barn that wouldn't remind her of the horse.
Now a year later and ready for a new horse, I find "Cruise" on craigslist and we go look. She really takes to him and she decides she's ready for another. Now this guy is too good to be at the little barn, he needs a place with an indoor arena and a $500 monthly bill  .
If you ever hear the term Dressage, run away! Its horse speak for expensive.

No kidding! Anything that involves showing or requires constant use of trainers - run away at a full gallop and jump onto a sportbike!
