aosbill . . . your post is exactly why I don't push one brand (like PowerService) over all others. There are plenty of brands out there that are very good products and do the job! The key is, if you live in a place where the temps get really cold, you have to use something!

It was so blankin cold here over the weekend that I finally got hit with the fuel gelling. I used my Cub for quite a few hours on sunday removing snow at 4 houses and farms. Yesterday I started the Cub up to let it warm up. 10 minutes later I heard it sputtering. I ran out and shut it off before it got any worse. Next was to pull the filter and clean it out. I poured 1 gallon of kerosene into the tank and ran to the parts store to pick up some diesel additive. This is the first time that I have had to add the anti-gel additive so far. I guess it's time to use the additive regardless in cold weather. A sputtering dying tractor does no work in my book. What the heck is a few dollars for anti-gel anyway. Your better safe and running than dying somewhere down the street. I hope it warms up soon. I have way too muc outdoor work to be doing that can't get done in this single digit cold weather.

Bob; I tried what KiotiJohn said about the glow plugs. As soon an the CK started today I turned the key until the glow plug light came on again and guess what, the Kioti just kept on running without sputtering and stalling. It worked like a charm. Too bad the owner's manual didn't say anything more about Cold Weather Starting. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Glad to hear the recommendations worked!

Would you mind making a post to the original thread where this question first came up so others may benefit?

Thanks......

Don

Just a followup KiotiJohn, I haven't had time to answer. I have used an additive by SNAP in every 5 gal can I can remember since it was new. The SNAP, about like most others says, "it is a Diesel Fuel Treatment, and anti-gel supplement" 32oz for 40 Gal. I used the last of the SNAP and bought the Power Service because of the talk about it here. It (PS) is supposed to prevent gelling down to -40 F, but 32oz of that is good enough for 100 gal, so I suspect it is more concentrated. I just re-read my original post and it looks like I said I have been using the PS all along, that isn't the case. The SNAP product is what was in the tank.

I drained the old fuel into a 5 gal white bucket so I could maybe see down into it if it was water but I couldn't see any water and it didn't gel up sitting outdoors during this cold weather. Now I'm not sure what to do with it. Do you suppose I could put a few quarts at a time into a full gas tank of one of my cars to use it up? Probably the fuel would be perfectly good during warm weather.

it may not hurt anything to put a small amount at a time in the car, but I really wouldn't want to put any diesel in my gas. Is the tractor running now that you've drained out the old? I suppose you've cleaned all the lines and tank as well? Get you a Mr. Funnel if you don't have one, and filter that fuel back into a fuel can and use it later in the tractor. There shouldn't be anything wrong with it. John

Thanks for the reply John. Yes the tractor is running fine now and I have put 1 -2 hours on it plowing snow since I put fresh fuel and new filter, so I know all of the old stuff has been cleaned out. I was concerned about the pump a little but I would guess that is well 'flushed' by now as well. I thought I could probably use that fuel, after filtering, etc. I've never heard of a Mr. Funnel so I will look into that.

I use Power Serve in my CK-20 with good results. Even at 7 below she starts well. I add the Power Serve to the tank directly, not into the 5 gallon container or through the water filtering funnel.
I also use PS in the Power Stroke.
