Probably a combination perceived need, impulse, actual need, one of those contests involving a comparison of one's endowment, and even what works best for you.

I find myself having success with certain equipment and then ASSUME that if it works that well for me, it should work well for others.

Since building here in '89 I dug two holes that required more than a minute with a shovel,. They were for poles for poles so Wifey could hang the laundry outside to dry. It was so long ago I can't recall how long that took, but probably less than an hour. I can say there is no reason for me to have a backhoe.

Bought a rear snow blower. It was fun, but is probably the slowest method of snow removal I've used. It's going to be sold with the L3200. I can see someone loving a blower if they don't have a place to push the snow, but last Winter I ran the 8' front blade at about 15 MPH while doing parking lots.

I’m getting a new John Deere X758 diesel riding mower with cup holders, butt warmer, lane departure warning system, and built in beer cooler.

I don’t care if 4570Man thinks they’re a waste of money.....

I've kept away from the cheap lawnmower thread because I don't think anyone wants to be reminded that most cheap mowers are bought by people with 1/4 to 1/2 acre flat lots. However, most of the backhoe responses seem to be to someone who just bought some property and needs to remove 5 or 6 stumps. I think it's appropriate to question the wisdom of buying a backhoe in that situation. I think we all recognize that there are a lot of members on this site that use a backhoe all the time. If I had one it would have been used 4 or 5 days in the last 10 years.

That nails it well. Read the "junk lawnmower" thread to see it. Guys suggesting high end mowers, that will last a homeowner decades, for an 86 year old man who seems to have dementia. What THEY use, or wish THEY had, is what is recommended for nearly every situation. If all you ever do is frame buildings, a tack hammer is useless.

The smarter posters asking for advice give specifics of what they want to accomplish. It is those who ask "Should I get a _______?" and offer little or no information of what they intend to do that create most of the hubbub. With nothing to go one, MY needs must be HIS needs....and so we go.

i dont care what people get, i hope you buy 2 backhoes, i have had the need to use one 4 times that i can think of right off in my life and we just rented a mini excavator twice and called the plumber one time and i dug out the other one with my skid steer it just took longer and a much larger hole LOL!!!!

I actually DO have "2 backhoes",.... but plan to sell the older one soon.

I made that first point there a few times. OP doesn't want to be bothered with 'globally sourced junk' even if that's all that's available and all most people need.

I've used mine more than that in less than a year, including for things I never expected to do like burying two cows for a neighbor.

I bought a Case 1845C skidsteer once and it came with a D125 backhoe attachment, I used it a little but seems like every time I did I blew a hose or a packing out of a cylinder. I think it was from sitting so much. I sold it a few years ago and haven't missed it but could have used it to bury a couple animals. If you have a use for a backhoe they are great, if they are just going to sit let someone else keep them up is my thinking.

I buried a couple cows for friends with mine, the first one I blew a cylinder and a hose and charged him $90. I lost money on that dead cow.

If I had the extra income to afford a backhoe, then I would most likely get one. I may only use it once or never a year but I think if I had one I would be making jobs up to use it cause they are fun. I would also get one with a hydraulic thumb because I would definitely find a lot of use for that. For now though, I will borrow one or rent one as needed.

Because a lot of people buy a backhoe to just have it, feels and looks cool and frankly is cool. But when you figure its almost a 10k add on most people never really use them. They buy them because they needed to dig one 200ft ditch, and then there it sits. I just rented a 30 ton Ex to dig out my foundation full of rock was only 1200 bucks a day, that ex would have dug that ditch in 30mins. Its all relative. Farm and other like things a back hoe is needed for sure, other not so much. But this america get what you want

I wouldn't call it "flaming", to inform newbs around here that adding a backhoe to their new compact tractor purchase is probably a huge waste of their money. In fact, it's downright responsible of us, haha.

Now, if you have a dedicated backhoe machine for your large property, thats a whole different ballgame.

If someone wants a backhoe who cares, they are useful big and small and make a good addition for resale.. I’m not sure why anyone cares what others purchase..

Thanks for badmouthing me in another thread.

Anyways, I bought a Ford 575D in 2004 and it is my most used piece of equipment, so I too am confused about ppl getting kicked in the nuts for buying a backhoe.
