i think its a bush hog mower. was my ex's grandfathers, completely rebuilt by him. this pin came out of the quick disconnect on the pto shaft.

It appears to be the pin you depress to allow the PTO shaft to slide into place and hold it in place once properly situated.

I think you've already identified it. The ones I'm familiar with use a spring for tension and clip to keep it in the hole.

Lost mine one time.
My solution was to clamp a 3/8 bolt in my drill press and using a file I 'turned' one (LOL, vertical lathe).
Drilled a hole for a cotter pin and scrounged a suitable spring.

That was 8-10 years ago and still holding just fine.
Not the most economical but sure saved lots of time plus I like DIY.

got the pin showed above. had to do a little fitting, but got it on. now if it would quit raining i can try it out!
