I was at Harbor Freight today. They had sent me a flyer showing Grade 43, 3/8" x 14’ chain with hooks for $16.99. I ask the manager if he had it in grade 70. He told me that the 5/16” x 20’ Grade 70 was the same price. I bought two of them. The sale goes through March 27, if anyone needs some get them while they are on sale. I know that there are several here that don't want HF chain, but I am sure that several would like to have some for that price. BTW, boomers are $11.99 each.

Thanks Jerry, I was at our local HF store last week and saw the 3/8 chain but there was no mention of 5/16 gd70, didn't think to ask the mgr. If I'm by the store again I'll definately ask as that is a good price and I prefer 5/16", its a little easier to handle and for what I use it for grade 70 is plenty strong.

Be careful though. I was all set to buy the G70 5/16" chain when I was first buying my tiedowns and noticed that the HF ratchet binders were only sold in the 3/8" size so I had to buy the G43 3/8" to match. Just think, I could have been so much safer with the 5/16" G70.... whatever.

I love that store. My rotary barrel pump marked at 25$ was sold to me for 11.99$ on Saturday.

I haul for a living so I use chain and straps pretty much every day I work. If it says Grade 70 which is what youre "supposed" to have on a commercial vehicle it has to pass certain tests for DOT to approve it. Some things that harbor freight has I wouldnt touch but their chain is good stuff I have about 300ft of it and havent had a problem in 2yrs using it ATLEAST once a week. Alot of the guys that work at the company I do also use HF chain its good stuff. Yall may also wanna check into Rachet binders instead of Snap binders or Cam Binders. You dont need a cheater Pipe for rachet binders and theyre much safer. Chevron and BP both require them for any of their loads that must be chained.

Will a ratcheting binder for 3/8" chain work with a 5/16" grade 70 chain?

Thanks, Nathan

Not so sure. G70 5/16 has lower working load than G43 3/8". The G70 does have a nominally greater breaking strength though. The transport rating thing is largely related to corrosion resistance and lack of stretch as best I can tell. ((I don't intend to start another G43 vs G70 war though). Until they started making G70 chain a decade or two ago all transport chain was G43 at best.

I know, I was being a smarty pants. I respect the WLL just as the DOT does.

I went to Harbor Freight yesterday but the Grade 70 20' 5/16 chain was "On Sale" for 23.99 I bought the last 2 that they had out and the other 16.99 chain was all gone. Did buy 3 of the 2"X20' 9.99 Tow Straps that seemed pretty stout.

Here is the add. They should of at least let you have the G43 for $16.99 as the add states. When I asked the manager about the G70, he said it is there with the G43 but they are the same price. There was one box of 43 and a couple dozen of the G70. I now wonder if he had changed the G70 to $16.99 because there was only one 43 left.

Any time I have gone to HF to buy something on sale and they had none in stock I asked for and rec'd a rain check. Checked back a week or so later and got it for the sale price.

I got that chain on sale last year, and it's one of the best buys I ever made.

I should be really mad at you guys. I've been on the Harbor Freight email list for some time, but don't deal with mail order issues so well so have resisted mail ordering anything.

After seeing the web site & flier for real stores - because of you guys - I took the 100 mile trip to the 'local' store today.

Wasn't pretty.

Will be worse when I have to explain the charges to the wife.

I can't just go pick up 1 thing I need there. I usually leave with 2-3 extra things that I've just "got to have". It's best to not carry your credit cards, checkbook, or extra cash. I guess it's almost as bad as a compulsive gambler going into a casino.

I am mad at you guys too. I went to the supplied link typed in my address got the address for the local store. Thought it must be new cause I had never seen it. Drove to tallahassee and the address is there but its a AAA not a Harbor Frieght. spent $5 on fuel but saved hundreds by not shopping. I prefer to buy things like chain amd binders hands on so I can choose the quality level that meets my needs and fits my budget.

One good thing about Harbor Freight is that they match their internet prices. But only if you print out the page off the internet and bring it with you.

It really works out well on some things. For example, the 9,200lb rated racheting binders are regularly priced at $29.99 and were not on sale at the store but they were on sale on the internet site for $19.99 so I printed that page out and got them for $19.99. The chain was on sale at the store for $23.99 but it was $36.99 on the internet site so you get the best of both world by using the internet site and the local store sales.

I bought the binders but I found 3/8" G70 chain at another place locally for $36.95 and am going to bite the bullet and get the bigger chain since HF only had the 5/16" G70 chain.

FWIW, Nathan

When my daughters were very young, I thought it would be funny to teach them that Harbor Freight was an Adult toy store until, one day, we were at Sears and couldnt find what I was looking for. My youngest daughter pipes up, "Daddy! I bet we can find it at the adult toy store!"
