Greasing tips for an absolute beginner?

I grease right after using the tractor while I am waiting for it to cool down at an idle. I am going to stand around doing nothing anyway. This way I am still being proactive instead of fixing something when it is broke, which is reactive.

How about a picture of your PVC holders?

They are just pipe and hose clamps with a notch for the handle to rest in. Like the other half of the nation I have the flu and am not going out to take pics. I'm resting in my recliner in my jammies I stole the idea from here, I guess a search might turn something up.

All the great suggestions were very helpful. I fully greased my tractor this week, using the 20V cordless grease gun. I wore coveralls, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Then cleaned all the zerk fittings before greasing so I did not inject dirt. One zerk that would not accept grease finally relented after I moved the bucket up/down, as was suggested.

I was a bit surprised at what a contortionist I needed to be in some cases, as some areas were hidden from view and hard to tell when enough grease was applied. I might use a mirror on the end of a stick next time.

I think I will keep my manual grease gun for the items like greasing inside a rubber boot. Probably less likely to overgrease in that circumstance.

Smart move & things with boots only take a couple pumps anyway.

when I went to JD last time for a service part, I asked about their green grease. What I was told was that JD
recommends Moly grease, green or whatever color. I'm really surprised JD didn't figure out a way to make their motor oil green too...;)

almost all of my work clothes became work clothes when I ruined them on grease.
Pant legs on your "good pants" just seem to jump up against the FEL...like magic.

good ideas for storing grease guns here. They will drip over time, I've seen grease guns with red grease
look like they are bleeding.

lots of paper towels. Maybe take the whole roll...clean the zerk first and then clean it after you are done. Just a dirt magnet.

and if you ever pressure wash anywhere around those zerks, make sure you grease them when you are done, and try to avoid any direct contact on the
face of the zerk; not easy to do if you want to clean all the gunk out of those tiny little holes they sink the FEL zerks into.
