Hand guns like the lever or pistol grip style are good exercise....helps me crush my competitors in the handshake grip contest.

Lock-n-lube is worth every one of the 3,000 pennies it costs.

"On guns, I like the hand pump because I can feel what's happening. I tried a pneumatic once but I never knew if it was pumping or just making noise unless I pulled it off the zerk and hit the trigger."

I had same experience and will only use hand pumps especially on fittings you need to know what went in and have no way to such as sealed bearings. Open pins use pneumatic. Never use electric grease use.

I like the manual guns as well so I can feel how the zerk is taking grease. Here are a few things that might help for general greasing tips for a very new person.

Clean off the zerk before you grease so you don't force dirt into the bearing.

Make sure the end of the grease gun is clean, push a little bit of grease out and wipe it off if the end looks dirty. Again, keeping dirt out of the bearing.

Some Moly greases are not happy with high speed bearings, they can cause separation of the moly from the grease base and gum things up. If you are greasing bearings that go fast, say over 300 RPM, make sure your grease is happy with bearings. It might say something like OK for wheel bearings or something like that.

Different types of grease don't always play well together, for example lithium and polyurea are not always compatible. Some are though so just read your label to know what kind of grease you are using and stick with it. You can change in the future, just make sure they are compatible. If not then you would grease until the new grease comes out clean, flushing out the old grease.

Grease comes in different thicknesses for different applications, read your manual to make sure you don't have a special case but 99% of the time you just need the standard viscosity which is NLGI 2

If the zerk has something near it and is a pain to fit the tip over, they do make pointed tips and needle tips that just fit in the end of the zerk and push the bearing down so you can grease without having to put the head of the gun over the entire zerk.

There are in general 3 ways that a person greases something with a grease gun. There are lots of exceptions but unless your manual says something different these will give you a great start.

1. Joint that is sealed with a rubber or plastic boot, an example is a steering arm on a car or truck. When you grease, the grease will start to expand the boot. In this case grease until you see the boot start to grow. You can break the boot so you are just looking for a small expansion, once you see that stop and you are done.

2. This one and the next one are similar, the difference is when you stop. Grease until you see old grease start to come out of the pin, joint, bearing, etc. This is the method on most things.

3. This is like the second but keep greasing until you see clean grease come out. You are totally flushing out the pin, joint, bearing, etc. You could do this with everything except it makes more of a mess because of all the excess grease. Sometimes though you do want to totally flush things out. An example is the bearings on my equipment trailer, there is a zerk in the hub which will grease both bearings. The manual states to keep greasing until it is clean coming out the end of the axle. Normally these situations are done for things that are not greased a lot. Things you grease every 8 hours for example get number 2 while a once a year or once a month are more likely to get number 3. Your manual should tell you if you need number 3.

Grease compatibility chart... The Skinny on Grease Compatibility

Generally pick one brand & type then stick with it. Molly fortified greased are good for tractor use, but avoid them on high speed bearings like wheel bearings. I hear the Molly can build up & change the tolerances.

Not according to Valvoline. Also not according to my experience. I have used Valvoline Moly grease in all my wheel bearings for nigh on to 40 years and have never had a failure.

I have PVC pipe gun holders on everything that needs regular greasing with the red TSC grease. Each has the LockNLube coupler. With it right there, I've no excuses for not being consistent with PM'ing after every other use. sometimes daily depending on how hard the work was. It don't take long to beat all the grease out of a FEL moving gravel or poop all day.

The trick is to force yourself to be consistently consistent.

How about a picture of your PVC holders?

I keep my guns in a 5 gallon bucket hanging on the wall so they don't leak & drip everywhere. Made a PVC one for 1 gun, then outgrew it.

I grease right after using the tractor while I am waiting for it to cool down at an idle. I am going to stand around doing nothing anyway. This way I am still being proactive instead of fixing something when it is broke, which is reactive.

They are just pipe and hose clamps with a notch for the handle to rest in. Like the other half of the nation I have the flu and am not going out to take pics. I'm resting in my recliner in my jammies I stole the idea from here, I guess a search might turn something up.

All the great suggestions were very helpful. I fully greased my tractor this week, using the 20V cordless grease gun. I wore coveralls, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Then cleaned all the zerk fittings before greasing so I did not inject dirt. One zerk that would not accept grease finally relented after I moved the bucket up/down, as was suggested.

I was a bit surprised at what a contortionist I needed to be in some cases, as some areas were hidden from view and hard to tell when enough grease was applied. I might use a mirror on the end of a stick next time.

I think I will keep my manual grease gun for the items like greasing inside a rubber boot. Probably less likely to overgrease in that circumstance.

Smart move & things with boots only take a couple pumps anyway.

when I went to JD last time for a service part, I asked about their green grease. What I was told was that JD
recommends Moly grease, green or whatever color. I'm really surprised JD didn't figure out a way to make their motor oil green too...;)

almost all of my work clothes became work clothes when I ruined them on grease.
Pant legs on your "good pants" just seem to jump up against the FEL...like magic.

good ideas for storing grease guns here. They will drip over time, I've seen grease guns with red grease
look like they are bleeding.

lots of paper towels. Maybe take the whole roll...clean the zerk first and then clean it after you are done. Just a dirt magnet.

and if you ever pressure wash anywhere around those zerks, make sure you grease them when you are done, and try to avoid any direct contact on the
face of the zerk; not easy to do if you want to clean all the gunk out of those tiny little holes they sink the FEL zerks into.
