I have two anvils. One is a large Hay Budden that is 125 years old or so based on the serial number. In good shape too. First American anvil maker that replaced the imported ones from England

Yea upsetting in black smith terms is increasing the diameter of a steel component by ramming it glowing hot into the anvil. Use it occasionally in my black smith work

Plan to move the black smith equipment down in the welding shop when it gets finished

My idea of a 40x60 building would replace my 24x40 garage and 30x40 pole barn. It would not replace my 20x40 hip roof barn for animals.

Bought and set up an Oooma Voip phone to be our backup so I can save on our Xfinity bill.
We get awful cell reception and using cell over IP has never really worked well for us.

Most trees are just yellow as the leaves fall this year since it's been so dry. Dogwoods and firebushes look pretty good but a little paler than normal.

I have 2 garages with total 4 bays, always full up and rearranging by project or time of year.

I tried ooma years ago, but had crappy satellite internet so it didn’t work. Wonder how it would work with Starlink? I still have my unusable Verizon landline that is always static.

Dad probably has an anvil at the farm, not sure.
He has an old belt driven planer that planes up to 3-4 ft wide, at one time could make molding also. Probably rusted away sitting on muddy dirt floor of barn.

Good Morning
51° and sunny. High of 60 or so with continued sunshine. We did get about 1/8” of rain overnight.

Yesterday’s breakfast and trip went as expected, no surprises. I saw this interesting looking cloud, nature’s version of a Rorschach blotch.

Today will be a day of whatever i feel like. Probably in the shop. No real plans, but the little plane needs to be inspected, its partially disassembled now.

assume you mean door height at 14 ft, then all sizes should fit in.. My camper is only 10'6" to clear the ac unit.

saw this one today, thought that is what i need.. although i would go a little wider to fit truck in beside it, or do a lower shed off the side for the truck.

who uses an anvil these days, and for what?

Aside from horseshoes, metal working, and general smithing/tool making.

My 30x 48 barn is stuffed full, got 2 tons of pellets in yesterday, but had to juggle, and no room to walk. Have bunch stuff on pallets to make easier to move around.
Where I want camper shelter is beside the shed. Hill slopes away, so not much depth without a lot of fill. Ideally front would be flush with shed, and camper sticks out probably 10-12 ft past it. Trying not to spend big $$, but campers really take a beating sitting outside.

While I see the slope, I'd bite the bullet and put in a retaining wall and fill. Of course, I'd wake up in the middle of the night and wonder about making the whole thing larger and replacing the garage while I was at it... who me overthink something?

FWIW: We use Ooma over Starlink. It works great. We also put in enough WiFi so the cell phones work well over the WiFi as well.

Might have to be a slow day due to lousy air quality. In the clouds at the moment, and I am hoping that the AQI meter is reading mostly water particles, but not worth risking it as sometimes there is a bunch of crud in the clouds.

Camper about 13 ft in front of shed, then need a couple feet in front.., so back needs to go about to where the end of the open gate is (the gate without a fence) to make the front flush.

That is the shed I just resided, and it still has some junk in it, mostly old lumber, the old husqvarna lawn tractor, buckets of sand, air compressor, more junk... I cleaned a lot of it out when I resided the shed. This is also the shed I was going to move a few years ago (I have a thread about it) but never did, because of the lean to attached to the back with more junk under it, like old double hung windows I was going to use in a barn (but didn't), parts to a 24 ft above ground pool, 2 old bikes, more buckets of sand, few old rotors, snakes and bee nests, and ground hog holes under everything... Originally I parked the L3130 under it years ago, and used to keep the massey in the shed. Last night I lay in bed thinking again about moving the shed.....

so I estimated about a 3-4 foot fill required to bring the far back side up to grade. Could get the laser out and check it.

course I would also want to extend a septic line from the back of the house, bring a water line out, and it just keeps getting more and more expensive.....

saw several sprouting acorns laying under the oak, so threw a couple sprouting ones in a hole. That oak tree was grown from a sprouting acorn I put in some mulch, unfortunately should go if i put another barn where camper is...

If you put fill out to where the opening end of the gate is in the picture, that would take probably 6 18 ton loads of pitrun/bank run gravel, plus your retaining wall. Then add the 3/4" clear stone on top AFTER you pack the pitrun. That looks like 3/4 clear you are parked on now. Clear stone is washed stone, same thing.

Do you have a concrete company near you? If yes then talk to them about retaining wall blocks.

Good morning! Low of 39°, sunny today, 40% chance of showers tomorrow. We still need the rain, currently back into "moderate" level of drought.
About 6 weeks ago, our area was out of the drought map.......dried up quick!

Had a Dr appt this past Monday, generally all seems good, blood work good. She added a couple of meds to experiment with for relief of the knee's nerve pain. Might be working..... I slept last night for 6 hours straight..... that's the most I've slept straight through for probably the last 6 years!

Yesterday, picked up the materials needed for the fascia and soffit, and 4- 5 gal buckets of paint. Got a good discount on the paint at HD. 30% off, basically $180 off of a $625 order. Any little bit off helps.

David, to answer your question: the building is 30ft wide, 40ft long, 10ft side walls.
I went back and forth on the height, 14' high would be needed to have a 12' high door (to clear RV). Those doors were about $12-1400 EACH...and the steel frame would have been $3K more.
I/we need minimum 8' high doors for the trucks and tractor. I got two 10' wide, 8' high doors for $1000 for the pair.
In passing, the son and I both say we should have gone bigger now that the main structure is up. This will be better than nothing, so.....

Gotta get moving..... a few little odds and ends, then start ripping fascia on the table saw.

Fantastic afternoon mowing, a solid 4 hours. Finished up the Laupahoehoe end and the Hilo near area including tree line near old fence. Need an extended pole saw to trim low hanging eucalyptus branches.

Will continue Hilo side today.

Low this morning was 43.5F, nearby LWS reports yesterday's rainfall was 0.19".

Did not get Menards order completed.

Instead I mostly worked on researching/pricing components for a bulk water storage system.

Was pleasantly surprised to find that it appears to a very cost effective solution, as David suggested. At least compared to having a new well drilled.

Main components that would be needed that I don't already have are:

1. Storage tank (or tanks)

2. Float switch to turn off the submersible pump in the well when the storage tank or tanks are full.

3. Booster pump to provide pressure for the house.

4. Sanitation (UV light and/or other solutions)

Total cost could be as low as $1800 to $2000 not including sales tax. That assumes my labor (free) to cobble it together.

The maximum width of the door going into the utility room is 36" ... if the door and trim is removed.

It looks like that would limit the tank size to 300 gallon or less.

Chem-Tainer offers a 300 gallon vertical tank that has a 34.5" diameter and is 84 3/4" tall and has a 3 year warranty.

Complies with FDA standards 21 CFR 177.1520 (1) 3.1 and 3.2 and uses a UV Stablized Resin to prolong tank life. Excellent impact resistance. Features a 16" Vented Manway, 1-1/2" inlet, and 2" outlet. Weighs 87 lbs.

Closest to me is in PA, over by Harrisburg. Freight would be $275 to $335 depending on whether it's going to a residential or commercial location. Could save the freight if I go and pick it up.

Initial quick check on a Square D float switch looks like in the ballpark of $140.

1/2 HP Little Giant shallow well pump from Menards is $240 (before rebate)

UV sterilizer is $250 to $500 depending on model from Menards (before rebate)

Total outlay looks to be $1170 (on the low side) to $1960 (on the high side), depending on whether 1 or 2 tanks and the particular UV sterilizer selected. That assumes I make the trip to pick up the tank (or tanks) at the warehouse in PA.

Should pretty much have all the pipe (1" PVC + 3/4" copper), fittings and valves already in inventory that would be needed to plumb it.

Open to any thoughts and other input ... want to make sure I don't miss anything.

Not sure what all will be on the agenda for the rest of the day but I'm sure something will turn up ...

If i fill, I would just make a bank off the back side, no wall. If I go with wall, then I'd build as a garage, with footer, poured wall, etc.. but that is too much money to put into it. Just a wild dream at this point.

Got nice steady rain about an hour this morning mother nature must been upset about something 2:15pm she unleashes some fury 35-40mph gusty winds, hailing turn to heavy down pour lasted for 20mins.,no damage lot leaves shanking from the trees.
