Local state boys did a small milling and pave job near me. They should have stuck with just filling pot holes, as their paving job is horrible. Must not have used a paver, as it’s bumpy as heck, edges not straight. Looks like they shoveled out the asphalt and hit it with a roller. The roller they used was undersized, looked like a toy.

Good Morning
72° and sunny. High in the upper 80’s and continued sun.

Yesterday was busy with lots of little tasks, the morning was consumed by breakfast out and RC flying.
After lunch I did a flight review for a friend, sanded the shellac on the window trim, ready for urethane today.
Decided to reprogram the home link mirror in the Prius to work two of the shop doors as well as the door for thaw garage I park it in. The shop doors use a “rolling code” and that was not an intuitive process, but it all works now.

Hung up some 48” LED fixtures in the shed, lights up nice in there now. Had a batch of phone calls to return before dinner and the recliner.

This morning started with an AC service call for a friend, it was just a capacitor on an ancient (R22) carrier condenser, so I was home in time to have a bowl of cereal with Zoe at my feet.
Have to make the bed, and then head over to the shop to apply urethane to the window trim.
Another service call after lunch, this one is an R410a system that sounds like it’s low on charge. The big question is how low, and where is the leak.
Probably some more puttering around after that.
Some oddfellows business this evening.

turns out the same power surge that fried my hvac transformer and thermostat also fried my
landlady's stove and something else on same line. She lives about half a mile away.

I must have a dozen MOV surge protectors plugged in all around.
thirty years ago I built Heath Kit surge protectors as xmas presents for family.
not much has changed in circuitry apparently.

back in. Entered destination address into Garmin.

not much has changed in circuitry apparently.

There are many whole house surge protectors that are definitely worth the money when properly installed. And the most expensive ones aren’t really any better than the cheaper ones, just have better warranties and advertising.

As Drew said, the active ingredient is almost always an MOV, which is a resistor that reduces its resistance as the voltage goes up, providing a path for a voltage spike that bypasses your connected appliances.
They are limited in their current capacity, and often give their life in service of your protection.

Mazda Oil changed, always tight getting under it. Always have a hard time screwing on new filter, reaching under blindly. I can find where it goes, just hard getting the right angle for threads to line up.

When an MOV sacrifices itself, it’s usually in a grand way, blowing themselves apart and leaving a tell tale burnt smell, usually evident in power strip type surge protectors.
They generally fail shorted, so the failed device will usually trip the breaker on the circuit itself connected to.

But generally they are in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” category.

WU say 87F and sunny @ 12:00 but I can see there are some occasional clouds … which is a good thing.

Got a bill scheduled for payment first thing yesterday.

Refilled hopper feeder and both suet feeders. Also scattered some seed for the ground feeders.

Got the 6 long boards for the raised beds cut to length and started sanding them with the belt sander. Got sloppy and tore up the belt, trashing it …

Ran out to the dermatologist’s and got sutures removed. Lady that took them out said it looked good, no further wound care required. It's still kinda lumpy until the internal sutures dissolve which takes like 6 weeks. Back in 6 months for a check up.

Stopped by Home Depot on way back and picked up a couple of Diablo 3 x 21 36 grit belts.

Also swung by the local fresh vegetable market and picked up some potatoes, corn on the cob, and asparagus.

Started mowing down here around when I got back, got east side and back all done. Just the west side left to do which should take no more than 1/2 hour to finish up.

Grilled a nice little Porterhouse on the grill plus corn on the cob, asparagus, and baked potatoes for dinner. Was completely stuffed.

Agenda for today:

Quick run down to the corner for more gas for the Cub.

Start planting the tomato plants. Will be interesting to see how that goes … I’d like to get them all in the ground but I’ll bet there is close to 30 of them.

Move radial arm saw back over to the barn unless I can make space for it in the garage.

Get another bill scheduled for payment.

See what else comes up.
