Been there, done that, one too many times, PH. Sounds like you've done all you can, so just keep an eye on things and make sure you've got a safe way to get out if you have to. Hopefully you've got enough defensible space around your home to keep the fire away even if you're not there. The way I feel about wildfire is that no one cares about my home more than I do, and I'll take the responsibility of defending it upon myself until I feel it is no longer safe to do so. That means I will continue to ignore "official" evacuation orders, especially if it means the orders continue long after the fire has passed, as happened after the Camp Fire here. The news blackout does sound odd. Do you use the WatchDuty app or website? I just checked and they made updates pretty regularly yesterday. It also looks like various agencies were posting to X, too. Keep good notes on your repair list, Drew. If needs be, you can lay over an extra day to allow for the work. As far as the route goes, LA is pretty easy to avoid going east, then dropping south through the desert. Scenery wise, though, it's pretty desolate once you cross the border out of California. BTW, that breakfast looks delicious, and like a heart attack on a plate. It would take a major storm to shut down I80 over the Sierras, which predictions say will be just light showers, if anything at all. Too early to tell yet. If you've set your WiFi network up to require a password protected login, the "unknown" device is likely showing "unknown" as the device name because that device isn't smart enough to self identify when queried by the network software. You can figure out which device it is by turning things off one at a time and watching when "unknown" disappears from the device list. There were motorcycle speed trials at Bonneville just last week, but I'm not sure if the car guys will be there this week or not. Sergio's Mexican Restaurant in Elko makes a delicious breakfast burrito.

The new house looks marvelous, Paul. I especially like the fire resistant choice of material. Any good paint store should be able to match the Hardy Board.

Spent yesterday morning removing smart switches from the rear of the house and replacing them with the original dumb ones. Turns out there were three switches controlling three lights in the circuit, and I didn't learn that until I found the third one. That meant rewiring the first two, which I did, but leaving the last one unfinished because there are so many wires in that last box I ran out of time to chase them all down. So that's on today's list.

Still trying to make arrangements with an allergist down south to get my shots, but they haven't been returning calls for three days now. I gave their info to the allergy nurse here yesterday, hoping she will have better luck.

If you like a nice malty Octoberfest beer, try the one that's out now from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. They have it at Costco, and I was very surprised because SNBC is infamous for over hopping (IMHO) every other beer they brew.

Guys almost won H&F. Led from beginning and lost last hand and the game. Of course the gals were thrilled.
The kabocha shrimp curry was excellent. I’ve been asked to make again.

Off to Hilo for Friday follies. May get flu and Covid shots.

Wx permitting I could resume mowing this afternoon, but forecast makes that doubtful.

We stayed in Studio City this last trip, less crazy than Santa Monica where we used to stay.
When I worked in the area we were near Ontario airport. Used to be wineries, vineyards, racetrack. Now houses.

Thanking the Lord this morning. Son got concussed during yesterday's football game, plus I believe he was also suffering from heat exhaustion. There was a punt play where his team punted. The opponent fielded the ball and was running back. My son was the 2nd to get to him but son was hit on the helmet from behind by another opponent. He got up and ran to his sidelines and told coach not feeling well. They hydrated him and pulled him out of the game. It was near the end of the game, we took him home instead of him riding home on the bus. Was north of TxDon in Salado. There was another bad blindside hit by the opponents, but neither play was flagged (freshman football, freshmen refs)...But, still Thanking the Lord because he feels alright this AM.

Frustrating part is the team only has a handful of vanilla plays. My son plays running back and the Defense just keys on him every play. His front offensive line is not a cohesive unit, so to speak. Some of them played really poorly IMO. Also the frosh team's best player got called up to JV and he was the fullback who blocked for my son usually. So not a good game. But this morning, he woke up feeling fine and ready for school.

Spent half of Tuesday and most of Wednesday repairing an old Wellsaw Model 1000 at work. It is a horizontal saw with an 11' 6" blade. This is a pic from the net, not ours but pretty much the same. I had to machine on the back vise jaw to allow for one of the bolts that hold it in place to be positioned as a stop very close to 90degrees for a good perpendicular cut. Plus we took apart all the blade's alignment bearings, cleaned and re-installed. It is a bit of a learning process, to get the blade aligned on these with the way their adjustment system is setup. But they are very good, basic, common sense saws. It is sawing straight and true now.

Then yesterday I researched our Brown & Sharpe No. 1 Universal lite milling machine. There don't seem to be many #1's out there. #2 is common. It is a horizontal, and a vertical head might be able to be attached, but we don't have that option.
Even though I'm an old fart machinist, I know almost nothing of these things.
Can anyone guide me to why the X axis feed is slipping? Like a clutch needs tightening? But where?

These pics are not of our machine, but ours is very close to this one.

These things are very capable, if you have the options and the knowledge (which I am lacking). I've been almost 100% CNC since after my job shop work. Spoiled I am. This thing can even rotate the whole table about the Z axis. I think we may have the indexer for it but not sure. I don't even know where the best place to buy HSS cutters is anymore.

Anyway, we make Charpy impact test coupons on it with a V cutter to put the knotch in the coupon. It has had probably ZERO maintenance. I go over it like an old locomotive engineer with an oiler and just hit it all around. Wish I had a manual.

Well, I got the job I've been putting off for 30 years done, along with the south side of the deck closed in and the grass cut, too. The septic bed isn't long enough to cut yet. It'll get cut on the next trim.
Now I've got nothing planned to do over the weekend.

Yesterday I set up a deal with the garage that does all my service to come and get the Dodge and put the snow tires on. Oct 1 they will pick it up and do the tires on the 2nd and deliver it back to me. They also know my situation right now.

Did you get son to Dr. or feel it's not bad enough for that.
Hope he is fine, maybe whoever is supposed to block for him needs the coach to work on that!

Mostly, it’s not just the non English agents. Many have bad microphones. One sounded like they had microphone inside their mouth. Another had very low volume. I did talk to 2 very good executive agents. They did solve the 4 problems I had. But had to demand to speak with a supervisor to get to these people. You are right. Upper management needs to make calls to see how bad their customer service is. There are many more organizations that have just as bad customer service.

CS is a prime target of AI. My limited info is that AI is trained via existing info/experiences. Most calls have that recorded for training message. Does that mean it will be trained in ‘english is my 3rd language’? I suspect they’d want us to feel comfortable.

can anyone other than David actually find a real Dole Hawaiian pineapple any more? I asked our local produce guy, he was clueless, does not know pineapple production in Costa Rica has created an ecological disaster for that country. I bet a Hawaiian pineapple would be ten bucks a piece now, assuming anyone had them. Maybe that's a Whole Foods thing?

Hehe, we like Sophie grown or neighbor grown. If buying, we get from Costco. Anything in local store is $/lb, easy to leave on display.
We are very fortunate in that we often get white pineapples. I believe they don’t travel well so not commercial. The one local place that sells them removes the tops so they don’t get planted.
Diane made grilled white pineapple for dessert yesterday. Yuuuummmm.

Dole still grows on Oahu.

Kyle, if X axis is slipping I’m thinking that you will need to take off the table ! Get a table or work bench about the right height and adjust your table height accordingly! Crank the machine table off onto the bench and see what it looks like underneath! You might get some info off of Google possibly.

81F and sunny @ 13:30, calling for a high of 84F for the day.

Got 14 hosta starts/divisions planted and watered in yesterday. Really it was only a Baker's dozen, as the last was just a couple of small pieces I threw in the final hole.

Was slow going as the small, fine roots from the maples had moved up into the screened compost that was placed there a couple of years ago, looking for nutrients and moisture.

So the dirt I dug out from each planting had to have to roots removed so the dirt could be reused to fill in around the starts. Slow going ...

Took a break after finishing that up and came inside for dinner.

After that went back out and reloaded the sprayer with the new stink juice. It was starting to stink pretty good ... the crushed garlic really seems to give it an additional pungent kick.

By then it was dark so I pulled the Cub over to the planting bed and got everything sprayed using the lights on the Cub to illuminate the bed.

Need to swap out the shrub bucket today for the light material bucket and haul down some wood chips and get the area where the starts were planted mulched.

May dig out another clump of hosta before I do that though. The plants seem to survive pretty well after being dug out ... even if they don't get planted for quite some time.

Just dosed The Woman with the antibiotic drops. Asked Her if She was feeling any improvement. She said maybe a small amount, says She can occasionally hear certain sounds better. She doesn't seem to be coughing as much ...

my buddy we visited there was at Schofield. Yes, lots of pineapples grow there, some with interesting fruit under them. I believe this is across from dole visitor center.

The pineapple top will planted according to these YouTube directions which claim to have a 100% success rate.

Delicious, it is like a full bodied seasonal drink, sweet, almost like a natural sweet juice or cider.

The pineapple top was prepared and now ready to sprout - in about 2 weeks.

Afternoon all!
Busy today. Currently 80 and humid!
Managed to get the back yard mowed before it got to hot. Must have been to much for the mower though as it seems it blew another head gasket! Ordered a new one. Project for next week I guess.

Wife started cleaning all the windows, walls, drapes etc. in the house. Keeping her supplied with what ever she ask for.
Had a mouse on our rear camera last night climbing up the screen to the attic on the deck door. Set two traps for it.
Loaded up 6 pellet bags with chips and dust from the shop. Two will get burned tomorrow. Not sure what I will do with the rest. Clean bags of apple, maple and cherry.
Wish I could find someone who uses a smoker for cooking!
Off to the cousin's tomorrow to do some more on the dryer vent repair. Loaded up the truck already.
Tried my hand at making a teapot. Came out ok. Also another live edge maple bowl.
