80F and "Fair" @ 11:30, heading up to around 91F for the day's high. DP 69F, HU 68%, "feels like" temp = 83F.
Yesterday's high hit 96.8F at the LWS.
Got the right lift cylinder pulled, disassembled, and cleaned up ... things were going swimmingly ...
Started to replace the first seal ... the internal seal in the gland nut ... and it immediately started to crack and tear in multiple spots.
WTF ?
So I called local Kubota dealer to see if they had another of those seal kits in stock and they did, told them to set it aside and I'd be over.
That was a little after 16:00 ... and they close @ 17:00 ...
I-277 was closed for repaving so I had to double back and take I-77 ... which ended up being a parking lot before I even got to the Central Interchange.
It was clear I wasn't going to make it buy closing time, so I threw in the towel and headed back for the barn.
The seal is probably some kind of polymer and doesn't look anything like the one that came out of it.
Old one is green, new one is light colored ... yellowish beige.
Old one appears to have been a solid ring, like a thick washer with a square profile ... new one appears more similar profile wise to an oil seal with a distinct wiper lip.
Kubota parts website shows a choice of 4 different lift cylinders for the LA402-1 loader, with 2 different seal kits. Each kit fits two different cylinders. One of the 2 kits is NLA ... but there are still some NOS out in the system at various dealers.
Using the numbers on the cylinder, I still can't quite figure which one mine is ... the numbers appear to be one digit off from a cylinder that is discontinued (mine is 7J040-63011, discontinued item is 7J040-63010):
I already used one of these kits to rebuild the left cylinder and I don't recall having any issues like this. And that cylinder is not leaking as far as I can tell ... although I probably should take a closer look at it again.
This seal kit was sitting out on the countertop in it's package next to the vise. If it's not a defective seal, the only thing I can think of is that perhaps the seal material was somehow effected by strong UV light when I was welding either in the vise or on the welding table.
At any rate, it will be another trip today over to the dealer with the new kit and broken seal + the old green internal wiper seal to try and sort this out.
Hope everyone is having a decent Wednesday ...
