Drew why do you need more than Windows provides?

good question
With Windows 11, not sure I do. Always been a belt and suspenders thing.
I don't go on the dark web or anything too exciting online but you get those fake Microsoft
warnings about clicking here to fix your computer so if Microsoft can't keep fake Microsoft stuff out, figure
maybe I should have another layer of protection.
There is built in, free anti malware, and paid software.
good question as to where best value is.

I'd pay 50 bucks a year for something truly effective.

like going to Tijuana with a condom with little holes in it...are you feeling lucky?

I have been up on Windows 11 for a few months now. A cleaned Windows environment, but with OpenOffice running for the "desktop" applications. Using Chrome with no extensions as a browser. Using Windows Defender out-of-the-box.

So far, so good on the cyber front.

I also find the reliance of having an internet connection to be painful. I recall the days of long ago when it was truly a personal computer and if I needed something from the web, I'd have to turn on networking and what not.

I do a lot of modeling and analytics in my closed environments, so I also use Virtual Machines to accomplish everyday tasks. VMWare offers a nice freebee, for those occasions. That's a possible angle to explore to keep your real hardware safe. VM Workstation Pro.

Good Morning!!!! 52F @ 6:17AM. Foggy this morning, then partly cloudy this afternoon. High 76F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.
Great weather here through the weekend, and also up in the Sierra Nevada mountains where my motorcycle buddies plan to camp. In between, though, highs will be over 100F, so that means an early start for the rides there and back.
Found out cannot eat popcorn cooked in microwave anymore runs levels too high but 120 now.
Maybe one of these would keep you popping, Buppies:
Fire alarms went off yesterday evening with the tree coupled together saying carbon monoxide alarm. Would not reset. Had fire department check with portable one and found nothing. Removed batteries and tested some more. Could be dirt on the sensor?
Could be. The last false alarm I had happened when I was sanding drywall, and it was a CO sensor in the same room that triggered it.
On bloatware.....

It's all marketing and possible sales. It's out of control.
Maybe time to give Apple's offerings a try?

Another SpaceX launch woke me up around midnight last night, but was able to get back to sleep for a change. There are another ten launches projected for June, but too early to know the time of day (or night). Back a few years ago when there were only a few dozen launches a year at Vandenberg Space Force Base, people didn't mind so much if one went off in the wee hours. But it's a different story when the whole house shakes at 3AM twice a week. It'll be interesting to see how long Elon will keep getting away with that.

Managed to get the van unloaded yesterday and find homes for all the stuff. That took most of the morning and some of the afternoon, too. Posted ads to get rid of a bumper hitch motorcycle carrier and an ultrasonic cleaner, and that was pretty much it for the day.

Hate to do it, but I think today I'll get the Yamaha dirt bike out of the shed, shoot some photos, and post ads for it, too. I've no one to ride the dirt with, and won't go alone. I was using the bumper hitch to carry it to a dealer so I could get myself home when the van or truck went in for service, but at the new place I can almost walk home from both the RAM and Toyota dealer. Not to mention being able to take advantage of a free shuttle ride home. Still gonna keep the Honda Trail 90, though, and maybe pick up another one for a friend.

I got to thinking about cost per pound
comparing gasoline for your car vs food for our body
say four bucks a gallon for a gallon of gas that weighs rounded up 8 pounds.
50 cents a pound for fuel for your car.
I bet Popgadget's av gas is a bit more.

food is our fuel. And water.
water is cheap for most of us.
and for most folks above the poverty line
food involves a huge number of choices.
and a big jump up in cost per pound once you get past potatoes and rice.

I'm hearing less is more loud and clear on antiviral.
thank you.

a local computer savvy friend has been mentioning VMware or similar to me that he uses.
He goes places, and has more concerns, than I do.

I used to have a separate old computer just to do my checkbook.
Now with online billpay that's long gone.
but I felt good that the internet was not attached to that pc.

folks doing real business work, product development, personnel work, etc from home
sure don't want that hacked coming through TBN, simply for example.
the bad guys are getting smarter every day
and now they could be real bad guys, like international bad guys, doing you internet harm.
and trying to shut down your electrical grid.

lawn guys have left, I can go outside now.
Their machinery noise overwhelms my ears, defines rotational whine.

Drew, Those fake Microsoft updates are almost always browser takeover ads, designed to scare you into calling a call center in Jalhalpsbad, India where they'll take as much money as possible from you. 9 times out of 10, if you close the browser and reopen, it can be resolved. On the 10th time, it requires clearing of the browser cache as a bad cookie or file has stuck in there. There's not really much Microsoft can do about those, and is my main response as to why I block ads. I used to help out at a Nursing home, and the number of residents that fell for these or clicked on those "YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT! *state* DRIVERS GET A BIG PAYDAY!" ads. I could explain it repeatedly, but they just wanted a deal...or maybe just to talk to me. Not sure.

Well I can say I fix more problems caused by 3rd party anti virus software than the software itself fixes. But then again that's only 35 yrs in IT.
Not wrong, especially Norton and McAfee. I think anti-virus has gotten better at hogging less resources lately, but again, that's just my opinion and I've heard that Windows Defender has gotten much better.

Sunny and already 79F @ 10:00, calling for a high temp of 85F ... but I wouldn't be surprised if we beat that.

Fairly productive day yesterday.

Got bills scheduled for payment.

Got seed mixed up and scattered for ground feeders.

Other side of the one t-post topcoated.

Finished filling the one sprayer with glyphosate finally. Takes awhile as the funnel/strainer/filter only holds 16 oz at a time.

Got 30 some pepper plants planted in the ground and watered in. Still have probably less than a dozen "California Wonder" sweet bell peppers to plant. Was kinda brutal in the afternoon sitting out in the hot sun getting them in the ground.

Went up and got a couple 5 gallon buckets of fresh screened compost for top-dressing plants. It was so full of large earthworms I almost hated to dig into the pile for fear of cutting them in two.

Might stop by the garden center later today and see if they have any interesting pepper varieties and pick up a few to try.

The grandson of my heavy equipment mechanic neighbor who passed away a year or so ago stopped by in the late afternoon.

He's an arborist and we worked out a deal for him to dump the wood/brush/chips from his jobs up on the compost/woodlot so he can move it over to the family property which is adjacent to us in exchange for some tree work.

So he dropped that big ash that was leaning over into the maple tree over on the west side:

The upper portions look pretty solid/good so once I get the loader fixed on the Kubota I'll put the grapple on and move it up to the lot to season for the summer before processing it for firewood. Love ash for firewood ... easy to burn even when green.

There's still some snagged limbs up in the maple tree so care is still required when over in that area until the wind blows them down.

He still has another tree to top out and drop over by the garden but needs a rope which he didn't have with him. Plan is to do it this weekend.

Dug out an Asian "ground cover" plant - "shiso" in Japanese (Perilla frutescens var. crispa) - that The Woman got from someone She had delivered to which had volunteered back in the garden. She ended up potting it:

IMG_3285 copy.jpg

It's a member of the mint family and is pretty fragrant ... so might be useful as a deer deterrent. It's actually edible and is used in Japan as garnish for sushi.

Got one of the new heavy-duty tomato cages put on the largest Sunny Boy tomato plant which had outgrown its welded wire cage. Need to see how it fared overnight.

Woman sprayed everything in the garden with the peppermint extract/water solution.

A doe came out of the woods on the south side in the early evening while we sitting out there and sauntered up along the western edge of the yard until she got the tree that was taken down. Turned around and headed back into woods. Then came back for a second attempt ... but just couldn't get up the courage to make it past that downed tree ...

Neighbor lady came by with her dogs, I held the new little male who is just terrified of people for about 10 minutes until he finally gave it up and relaxed.

Watered plants in greenhouse before I went to bed.

Agenda for today:

Make up some seed for the ground feeders and put that down. Refill the 2 tube feeders and 1 suet feeder.

Water remaining plants on shelves.

Get the rest of the peppers planted and top dress the ones I planted yesterday.

Get another t-post wire-brushed, primed, and topcoated.

Maybe do some needle-scaling on the others in the shade in the heat of the day.

Maybe get some more spraying done if the winds are light.

Plus whatever else comes up.

Woman has a doctor's appointment this afternoon so I'll be solo for most of the day.

Hope everyone is having a decent Tuesday ... (y)

Good Morning

I'd like to take a dip in one of your pools, Don have fun in yours.

Drew, Dons pool probably more to your liking, mine is still only 78 ! Ok for me but a bit cold for my southern neighbors ! 😉

Mike, I’m with you on the prices of some of this food ! My wife is much more liberal as far as accepting high food prices ! I just won’t buy it ! 😉
