Good morning! 41 now, supposed to get to 54 today. Supposed to stay decent overnight then go down tomorrow.

A strip of rolling paper is still the accepted tool for setting timing on a Lucas magneto with a face cam. Lucas magnetos on motorcycles are odd beasts. The points are attached to the armature and rotate with the armature. When setting the timing, the rolling paper should just become free when the points are being lifted by the pushrod from the face cam. Crude, but it works.

But never got that far yesterday. Still sorting out the magneto mounting. There is some wear in the mounting pad and have been shimming the magneto to get the drive gear backlash right. The magneto also wants to twist in the mounting slots when the mounting strap is tightened. So started making a wedge to put between the cylinder base and magneto base to keep things aligned. Plus the seal is a touch small for the bore in the engine cases. So will need to address that issue. It is always something when playing with a 70 year old motorcycle

Not sure about today…l will take it as it happens

Everyone stay safe out there!

Rich, I had an AJS 350 while going to college. It served me well and took many trips around Europe with it but it broke the crankshaft just as I was returning from Parish to Denmark. Lucky it was close to home.

The Big Island is decided into 9 lava zones. We are zone 8, quite safe.

Going to a neighbor lady’s funeral, she was 84 and poor health last few years. In the past I might have been tempted to say elderly lady, but being 76 84 doesn’t seem so elderly.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

Popgadget I saw a few days ago you installed a replacement Tempest, did your battery also expire?

I just installed my second replacement. First was battery issues, second was temperature sensor. But I still like it and their customer service is excellent.

Good morning to all! Low was only 31°, going up to around 45°. Windy this morning at around 30-35, high winds this afternoon reaching maybe 65-70 mph! ---- maybe we will get lucky and they won't get that strong.

Rip, (Mike) hope your wifey gets better and our thoughts and prayers are with you and family.

RNG, sure, go ahead..... rub it in. I'll let you know when I get the 56+ tons.... gonna be soon...... Nice to hear the red bike is coming together. I wanted to upgrade the alternator on my Goldwing, but never got around to do it. Just used LED lights instead. Never really had a problem with using heated gloves and jacket, but I think they were pushing the limit.

David, those are awesome pics, thanks for sharing! Glad you're in a safe area.

Ken, glad the panels finally showed up. I very seldom have any material like that delivered..... always had issues. I would rather make the time to DIY.

Drew, hope your MIL has a better day and has some more improvement.

All this talk about weight..... I was able to knock off 40# in about 6 months over the summer.... then hit that proverbial "wall" ---- can't seem to get under the 200# mark. I would like to be 185 lbs.
I think the cookies and chocolate are my menace..... they just won't stop jumping in my mouth!

Everyone have a great day!

Good Morning.
I headed out early today for Decatur, IL. Another day with a big headwind, and hopefully bigger tailwind.

It’s windy on the ground here, with a front on its way.

Definitely different topography in the Midwest that we have on the east coast.

It’s not likely that I’ll be back in time to get anything productive done today, but you never know what will be waiting for me when I get home.

I also had an NSU 250 during that period that was a very clean and reliable German bike. NSU was the company that built the Kettenrad during WWII. NSU also set the world speed record in the 1950's several years in a row. NSU later merged with PKW and VW and became Audi
