lot of insurance will get paid out here but only a part of the real damage tab
to South Texas. Builder/engineer likely to declare bankruptcy.

current insured loss estimate for Florida is $67 Billion dollars. Insurance companies pulling out, hope folks are building these bridges to withstand
some seriously high winds. I hope Desantis shows some appreciation for the fact the Feds/i.e. all of us are helping to pay to fix the damage. As we should.
We will dig deeper in our pockets, more to Red Cross, more for the price of food.

As long as they cap the insurance limit for Federal Flood insurance, which indirectly loses so much money we all subsidize it to some extent, particularly those of us living
on tops of hills...I'm ok with the money of the all paying the claims of the few. But why do we allow new construction on what are basically sand bars?
I'm sorry for folks with waterfront properties but at some point, the water just might be rising a bit. At some point you are just courting disaster.
I'm not sure I want to subsidize that courtship by paying higher homeowner insurance because of national loss ratios, not just your state or county.

My insurance office had a very clear brown stain running all the way around the room's wood paneling about four feet up. That was the Flood of '55.
Owner cleaned up but left the marking line, sure made for good story when I described the fact that technically my office wasn't in the flood zone.
realistically it obviously was so the maps were nowhere near as accurate as today's gps updated ones. They lagged behind for a long time.
The 1955 line went clear through the downtown. We all knew what could flood again regardless of the maps. I sold a lot of flood insurance. Folks wanted to have homes right
on the Delaware River, regardless of how many times the property had gotten wrecked in the past. Tree trunks floating down the River can do a number on your exterior walls...
So they could get up to I think 200,000 on the building back then and only 40 thousand on contents. I'm sure those limits are much higher now, but stuff costs way more to fix now also.
Anyone who had nice artwork in their home near the river were informed of the availability of personal fine arts/property contents floater, literally....covering stuff that floated away when
flood insurance wouldn't. All risks except for intentional fraud. Rate was low, 15 cents on a hundred I think. Jewelry was 1.30, almost ten times higher.

I like to be near the water but not in it. Except on a big boat...
Chris, Happy Birthday, hit the big one, well the little big one...
Many more Happy Days

The clean up continues. Hauled out a dozen front end loads full of branches, logs. Starting to make a dent in it. Plan is to get it cleared before cutting down the next trees

Long day at work but once I put backpack blower to work for hour and half positive attitude. :)

No plans for the evening might watch little football.

Enjoy your evening all.

A good part of my carrier was spent on collecting on insured events under the contract for a dozen or so large power plant contracts. Some of these were for floods due to rain events or area flooding and we were claiming damages for clean up, rework and delays under the contract. The success on collecting could often be the difference between profit or loss on a project. Companies that are not well insured and astute in collecting often have to take chapter 11.

Don, I think you have a dream shtick there. I always thought about driving a tractor on the beach making the sand nice.
I would not like to get up that early.

Just ordered groceries for curbside pickup tomorrow. We use this grocery store that gives us points so generally we get 20 Percent off the bill and an extra discount on top of that for senior day. We try to shop less often so the bill is bigger for the 20 percent off

Happy Birthday, Chris!

The T-day ham was awesome! Sweet potato with butter and maple syrup for me and mixed veg for him.
We are basically going with non-traditional foods at holidays.

Good early (Tuesday) arvo. A bit warmer overnight temp of 5C. The skies are semi-clouded with a predicted high of 18C.

Well, I believe that I've caught up and synchronised my sleep pattern. So today I decided that I'd fire-up the Z-turn and handle some bracken that's in my neighbour's front paddock (where the 'Mad Horse Woman' has her horse). The Z-turn has sat idle since mid-April and, so far, it's turning over but failing to 'catch'... I've come in for a wee bit of lunch to let it settle and avoid flooding it, then I'll try again.

Practically as soon as I arrived back home (Saturday) I was tagged to assist this Saturday in the annual Endurance Race out & around Pyengana. I'll go out there on Friday arvo to meet the radio check-point blokes and figure out where they want me. Saturday morning I'll need to be there at "a sparrow's fart" (0630) as the horse/riders start before dawn.

That's about it, take care all.

Update: The Z-turn did finally 'catch' and performed flawlessly after that... I need to make a mental note to fire-it-up a couple of times over Winter. ;)

Fedex did deliver my new Starlink, but late in afternoon, too late for me to get on the roof to swap out according to Sophie. Several friends got delivery also. According to one, he had a second driver helping out and they had over 200 starlinks to deliver just our side of the island.

200? Might not be any data left for you mate. LOL
Very very happy with Starlink here. No complaints whatsoever. I have a fairly low angle roof so I sat the dish on the roof in a big glob of roof and gutter sealant on each leg. Not a hope of it blowing away and no holes required.

Hey, MG, thanks for the compliment. It is indeed a very pretty time of the year up here.

Regarding the docks, we usually take them out around this time of the year, and float the docks far enough away from shore so that they don’t get crunched when the water levels change in the ice cracks at the shore level during the spring drawdown. It is quite an adventure here with the water levels. They slowly go down about 1 foot over the course of the summer, then after Thanksgiving they drop it down fast (maybe 3 feet or so), and then let it rise slowly until January, and then they let it drop again until the end of March, and then they let it shoot up to the summer level in early April.

good morning all
another nice Fall day, sunny up to 70 today

house cleaners coming so I have to pick up, then a quiet day and dinner at my first wife's home a mile away.
slow waking up this morning
Don, morning job good for me, I'm up at 5am or even 4am most mornings.

I just wonder if it is smart to have Federal Gov. involved in insurance.
Only time they have gotten involved is when no one else will do it, so clearly the whole process is a loser from a financial perspective.
Flood, wind, earthquake landslides, mold...lots of things homeowners sometimes doesn't cover. I had to pay a special wind premium on my policy living in coastal NC.
The States have had to get into auto insurance often, "State Plans" or "Assigned Risk". The market of last resort. I don't know how much insurance premiums are collected in Florida
but a 67 billion dollar hit is simply off the charts. Average homewner premium for most of us is a little over 1000 dollars. 5 counties in Florida average 4,300 annual premium and 6,000 for Florida Keys. And still it's not enough money to pay for a major hurricane.

More folks need to do what RNG has done, reduce your own risk and go on a good defense.

37 going to 73. Yummy.

Kyle, I looked for your missing post...couldn't find it either. I wouldn't expect anything you would write to need censorship. On the contrary.

BEF, your plans are looking good. Hope you get to settle soon.

Wag, glad you got your mower running...it took me a second to realize why you haven't used it since April, since I've put nearly 100 hours on since then. Race sounds like fun. Cool that you got to see homer 61 in person.

Sodamo, hoping the Starlink install goes well.

Had a final day visiting with our son and GF. Did a dump run, and hike over near the trash convenience center.
