Good morning!!!!

We're 100% on the same page, David, especially the NIMBY/Greenie part. But loggers won't help the vast numbers of small property owners such as myself that don't have the big trees the loggers are after. I'm safe here thanks in large part to a neighbor that loves to drive his bulldozer at cost, but even then it wasn't cheap to clean this place up. And it's an increasing handful every year to keep it that way. But if your neighbor lets his property go, it can really mess you up. Just last night on the news, a young man told of watching two towering pines on his neighbor's property explode in flames, which then proceeded to shower his home in sparks. In moments it too was blazing, and there wasn't a thing he could do to stop it.

RNG,

Your situation seriously tugs at my heart strings... Be Safe!!!!

I do understand, I am entering the "small land owner" now as I will be under 20 acres and not completely wooded. I've got a guy, he is just getting started as a larger logging operation. I'm going to pay him to clear near the house, but I'm also hoping the old hardwoods I have will tempt him to do a limited thinning and cut me a 100M range site...

Here in VA, they will only log small (under 20-25 acres) sites if they are already set up on a neighboring property and can do it as they leave kind of thing.

Seriously, I pray to God your little sprinkler works, but if it goes bad GTH OUT!!!

Be safe please.
Be well,
David

David MFW -In MA where my uncle used to live the lumberjacks are all out of work from stripping out the old hardwoods. The lumber companies planted crappy pine, which will spread fire and burn hotter than the old growth. Be careful what you wish for in logging. Controlled burns and fire breaks seem to work best. It's what the Native Americans used to do and the Parks are trying to adopt it now. After seeing the blight in Yosemite from not letting the burns happening, they finally figured out clearcutting was not working and neither was fire suppression.
We now get most of our hard woods from asia since so little left in the US. Paper goods are expensive for a reason.

RNG - I hope this means that the fire is getting under control. I know a lot of people who got through camp fire with only the clothes they were wearing.

Ken,

Not to insult Mainers, but Loblolly Pine is the cash crop here in VA, building grade and faster growing. Hardwoods simply take too long to grow, 30 years for pine, 60-80 years for Hardwood. Homes are built from Pine...

I grew up in Oregon. OMG I miss those HUGE Douglas Fir trees, but they will not grow here in VA. Loblolly it is for me! I've got over 46 acres planted and I'm selling it!!!

My new place is all hardwood...

Like I said, not meaning any insult to Maine...

Be well,
David

Eric... that's some nice looking hay.
What does bale of hay cost?

Thomas, as it's you, I will happily give you a bale, although I can't help but worry about how much you are going to cry when you get the bill for transport. :)

RNG, "Make hay while the sun shines" is indeed in common use here, in all walks of life.

For some inexplicable reason, the more recent one of "Make silage when the weather allows a grass dry matter (DM) of 30% at harvesting, with rapid wilting to minimise excessive sugar and protein losses" hasn't yet crossed over from farming into every day speech. :D

Good morning all. Quite a strong wind today, I have been wearing a woolly hat to stop me shivering while cleaning out yet more brick joints. This year it is the turn of the old bull pen, which is now my workshop. It is only about 115 years old and made out of engineering brick, so would be much easier than the house to point, if only someone in the 1960's hadn't tried to patch over the lime mortar with sand and cement. Can't blame them really time in doing a quick bodge as they say time is money. With plenty of time on my hands, I must be quite rich ;)

Now I wonder if there's a way to retire from retirement?:confused2:
I heard that we all get to do that eventually ... Actually, when you have lived a long and happy life, that is probably no bad thing.

When I am about to kick the bucket, I could well be smiling at the thought of no longer having to pull ragwort while being stabbed by horseflies, while Jim will going "Whoopee, the old Toshiba microwave is still running !".

Anyone else got any last likely flippant thoughts to share ?

Good morning all.
Foggy morning, 75 going up to mid 80s with rain likely this afternoon.

need to call rv dealer and see if recall parts came in, apparently slide can self activate while going down the road.

Roy, I think that one event did more to our national psyche than anything else in our lifetime, other than perhaps the Vietnam War.
Made us all feel less safe.
While I lived in PA, great number of those investment managers on top floor lived in our area, something like 35 of them died, made quite
an impact on the community. Am very glad we are a lot more careful about terrorism now, but sometimes the bad guys, and the plain mentally deranged bombers
get past us. One of many good reasons to live in the country.
Pic is of maiden voyage of my first boat, Carver 33 aft cabin, as we brought it down from Mamaroneck NY through the East River and down the NJ coast, but not before taking in the sights of NYC and the Statue of Liberty. That whole area gave me goose bumps thinking of my grandfather coming
through Ellis Island.

Coffee is done brewing. 51° with partly cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 69° with sunshine and some clouds. Have a working light on garage now. I knew I had a spare fixture for this light. While putting tools away I found it. I'm sure I looked there at least 2 times. :ashamed: Take Sassy in for grooming, pay property taxes, pick up order at Menards today. Then will see what rest of the day brings.
Tree rat has a growth on its neck.

Roy, never forget. :flagday:

Bird, Hope you ice maker get repaired. I never use mine. I bought a repair plan from American Home Shield for just about anything in house that does something. Neighbors have had good response from them.

RNG, hope you got more than naps last night.

Buckeye, less overtime for you.

Don, root trench looks good. I remember you saying you were sore when we worked on your drive. I very seldom get aches from this type of project. Maybe that why my shoulder went bad. I do not know when to stop. Unless I am tired.

David, your lucky. Sassy's latest plan is to get me up between 1 and 2 am. Probably close to when I need my nightly trip to relive myself.

RS, 11% until

Everyone be healthy and safe.

Good Morning All.
