Good morning!!!!

Sweet potatoes different in different parts of the country, I think, or maybe it's just different people.
Most of the ones at Thanksgiving are sweetened too much with brown sugar and butter and usually with a layer of toasted marshmallows on top.
That's what my Oklahoman mother always made. My wife's West Virginia family had sweet potatoes quite often, year round, simply peeled them, then cut them in half and baked them with a little butter and sugar and served as a dessert to the meal. And now . . . my wife and I both like sweet potatoes, but about the only way we fix them is baked, then peeling removed, and mashed up with butter as a vegetable with a meal instead of a dessert. And of course sweet potato pie is so close to pumpkin pie that I don't care which I have.:D

Normally I bake my sweet potatoes, cut them in half lengthwise scrape out the meat from the outer skin, butter the skin for after. Eat the meat as a veggie and at the end of the meal eat the buttered skins as dessert.
On 'special' occasions my grandmother used to make candied yams. I never got the recipe from her then and now it is too late, but I think she put maple syrup in them. Almost always we had a gallon of maple syrup on hand.
I am down to my last quart, so this spring I will get 2 more gallons and cook them down to 1.5 gallons of dark. The goobermint got involved in the syrup making and state that you cannot sell syrup any darker than amber. There is a specific gravity that you need to follow. So to get my dark, I buy amber and boil it down myself.

That cold air will be close to record breaking but should not invade US pacific jet too strong

Eeeep! Better clear the decks now, while it is “warm” - oh, heck, SWMBO can do it.

Don, great crowd pic. I'd like just a little butter, real maple syrup and adding apples sounds very good. Maybe even some cinnamon.

heavy rain working its way East, due in soon. 54 degrees and quite pleasant still.
Trying to get organized for Christmas, maybe put up my solar powered
candy canes at the end of the driveway again on Sunday.
After the rain will be a good time.
Wreath for front door came in, can't find the plastic hangar.
Plus a couple of amaryllis plants for local friends.

Going to get a fresh cup of coffee and design next year's garden while the rain comes down, and a little electric
heater under my desk is keeping my feet and me pleasantly toasty. Which really helps
in offsetting my arthritic weather predicting of storms coming through.

It's 24° this morning and snowing. It started last night about 11:00 pm, not sure how much we've gotten. Yesterday was in the low 40's partly cloudy and windy all day. The storm is supposed to stop this afternoon and become sunny with the high around 30°.

I think the neighbor with the horses made it back yesterday. I'll give her a call and make sure I don't need to go up and feed them. Her place is on the back side of the subdivision and the road up to her place are steep. She is the one with a snow cat to get in and out in the winter. She usually has the horses down in the valley by now.

I'll wait and see if I need to move the snow around this afternoon. Not much else planned for today.

Hope everyone has a good day.
CWB.

Good morning to all! Low only went down to 30°, high today should be 52. Temps dropping tomorrow with only a high of 40° and gusty winds as a cold front invades.

Today's activities are going to include changing the oil in the vehicles, then get the Christmas deco / lights out of storage. I have to get them up by Monday deadline....won't be able to do much after Tuesday for a while.

Don, that was quite a crowd...you probably made a good choice staying on the outskirts.

Thomas, sounds like the local wildlife has been spreading the word about your place....as long as the BIG critters stay away:eek:

Everyone have a great weekend! Morning prayers sent out.

Good Morning!!!! 54F @ 7:00AM. Chance of a morning shower. Cloudy early with peeks of sunshine expected late. High 59F. Winds NW at 5 to 10 mph.

Picked up about 3/8" of rain here in Chico yesterday; hard to tell how much fell up in the foothills because the fire either wiped out all the personal weather stations in the area or the power is still off up there. I did speak with the Sheriff's dispatcher yesterday, but she had no info on when the evac orders would lift, and only reluctantly forwarded my request to the deputy serving my area to contact me to arrange access. I was able to get his phone number and leave voicemail to the same effect, but not sure how much good it'll do in spite of Don's feeling. But I sure hope Don is right!

The rest of the GoPro mount arrived yesterday, so I'll be able to video the return home. Should be interesting. I also remembered that there's a game camera mounted to the bead blaster on the back porch, and since I have photos of the bead blaster taken after the fire, it's reasonable to assume that the camera made it through as well. If the batteries lasted, I may be able to get a better idea of when the fire swept through by the photos captured at the time.

More rain due in Tuesday, with another storm predicted for Thursday, so there's not much chance at this point that the fire will reestablish itself. Also not much chance of that 1/8 cord of split wood I left out last summer will be suitable for feeding to the wood stove any time soon, either.

Hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable weekend...

Ironically, it was also announced yesterday that the burn suspension for Butte County will be lifted as of this coming Monday. I suspect that Mother Nature has already done a very good job taking care of my burn piles for me.:confused2:

As a small consolation, I'll be able to once again enjoy a nice campfire in the pit, AFTER I shovel out the year's ash accumulation...

39 now and rain arrived. Should see 46 and maybe 3/4 inch total. Got a few things done outside before the rain started.

RNG, hoping you are able to get home soon. Due to the smoke, that photo of your house looks like an old style photo, I think called daguerreotype.

Buppies, I was torn as to which team to pull for last night until the announcer said that a Hokie loss would break their string of consecutive bowl game appearances - the longest recognized streak in the country...so made it easy to appreciate the OT win.

Don, that was a huge crowd, and a real neat looking town...must have been warm, too...saw at least one guy wearing t-shirt and shorts.
