Good Morning!!!! 68F @ 6:45AM. Sunny. High 93F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

The main attraction that got me passing through Raymond was a little snip of a road called Ben Hur. Besides a great name, it twists and turns like a stepped on snake, and the pavement is so bad no one that doesn’t live on it takes it. It doesn’t hurt that it parallels the much busier CA49, which is often choked with tourists poking along and clogging up the “downtowns” of the little gold rush era towns along the way. That said, the stretch of 49 going north out of Mariposa is a delightful ride, one I’d planned to take on the way north. But the fires of last fall burned off all the trees and brush that hold the hillsides in place, and heavy winter rains triggered mudslides that closed the road in at least four places. CalTrans sez it won’t be open again until late this year. That put me back on the same road I took down, one called Hornitos to a tiny town of the same name. Rode through at least one “Road Closed” sign, as the road was obviously just as open on the way back as it was four days before, and the northern end wasn’t posted as closed. :confused2:

Visited one of those Adult Communities a couple of times, Don, and all the rules and people watching each other really gave me the creeps. Had to get a special permit for our car, and it was a big deal when one of the dogs wandered off for a few minutes. Hope it’s different in Sun City, and you and Wipper get to keep your wings...

With over 1000 miles on the refurbed engine, the oil blow by on the right cylinder hasn’t improved, so today I’ll pull it back apart and see if I can figure out what’s gone wrong. It’s time for a new front tire, too.

Utica is what we call east side. I live on far west side. I was born and raised in town that borders Utica on the south. That was over 45 years ago.
Are you near Brighton? I used to go up there for a project in the 80s. Company rebuilt some EMD diesels that we used for backup power generation. 3 engines, 5 MW of power. I used to stay in Novi.

I'm with you. We've visited the original Sun City, AZ, and one in this area of Texas. Those places are obviously popular, so I can kind of understand why others might like it, but not me.

Some good town names in CA, Ben Hur, it's south of Mormon Bar.

Spent a week in San Mateo back in the 80s, took a drive one evening out past Livermore, probably as far as Tracy, than turned and went back.

Also went to Sacramento once.

CA is pretty, shame the govt is so messed up.

I live between Exit 155 and 159. Novi is at 162. Brighton is between 145 and 148. Or about 10 miles west of me on I 96.

I spent a lot of time in CA. for work. San Jose, Fremont, Van Nuys, Pico Rivera, Long Beach, Oakland, South Gate. All dealing with Auto Industry. I think the only one left is Fremont that makes Tesla's now.

Winchester has mission bbq!!! Lol

I like finding and eating at places like RNG found in Raymond. Kind of like when we stopped at Nana's Irish pub down in middletown va. I am always up for a good food road trip. Heck, we drove down to Catawba Va once just to eat at "the homeplace".

Yeah, I do the same thing, try to find some local place that has a lot cars at mealtime.
