RNG, are there no alternatives where you are? WISPs? (Wireless Internet Service Providers) How far away are your neighbors, and how far is the nearest point with fiber optic internet? You could possibly set up a WISP in your area.

The house is located down over the edge of a canyon, so there are no WISP antennas within line-of-sight. I know because the only provider in the area keeps mailing me flyers proclaiming the service area has expanded, and I call every time only to find it has not expanded far enough.:confused2: I do have a copper telephone line, but fiber is a long, long way off, and there are not enough people on the road leading to the house to make it profitable for AT&T to install it. They charged me $3500 just for the copper telephone line, and I'd hate to find out what they'd charge for fiber, though some days I'd gladly pay whatever they wanted!:pullinghair:

He is standing on his own for the photo, but the moment he moves he loses balance. He was OK though holding on to the chair and skating. Seems like the cold should stay a couple of days, so tomorrow at least we can go again.

I wasn't very coordinated as a kid, either. When I was your boy's size, I had these strap on ice skates with a short blade at each corner, two on the front, two on the back. I could stand up on 'em, but spent more time on my butt than on the blades. After three or four seasons of that, my folks gave up and got me some hockey skates. Couldn't get anywhere on those, either. Then I asked for a pair of figure skates, and took off on 'em like I'd been born to the ice. Only modification I made was to file back that bottom tooth on the front that kept catching on the ice and tripping me. I don't know if they are all made that way, but it really helped my skating, such as it was.

But, I will answer. :D

We have gut microbes that now thrive on fiber. Toilet paper is just fiber. The microbes that "escaped" to the septic tank eat the TP as fast and we can feed it to them. Even though we probably feed them twice as much as none-plant-based people.

Then you should start a business to go up against Rid-X and the like. Had the septic tank pumped as part of the inspection when I bought this place, and it cost me $600 bux. Could buy a lot of crap for that...:laughing: You could even offer a TBN discount for group purchases...:D

Thanks, Rick. Good info. I'd found a web page that had an excerpt from a book about top egg breads, and we initially selected based on that. We wanted larger birds that produce fewer eggs (about 200/year) and are not aggressive. That page also recommended a couple of books on raising chickens, which The Wife ordered from Amazon. As with most things she does, she's already diving right in, and I expect she'll be a veritable fount of chicken knowledge in no time.

You may soon be in the presence of your very own “chicken whisperer”. Good luck!

We have our septic tank pumped every 3 years. I killed almost all the "beneficial" bacteria/microbes in the tank after a +1 years continuous use of prescribed antibiotics. It was really nasty opening up that tank lid. The honey dipper guy immediately stated upon the "opening"- "someone's been taking a lot of antibiotics."

The previous Governor "promised" western MA fiber optic internet service during his tenure as Governor....... We are still waiting..... At least we have DSL. Friends of ours just got their FO internet from their previous dialup internet connection. The few people that I know who have a satellite internet connection are not happy with the quality of signal during inclement weather.

I have a mound system with twin inline tanks, if working properly it’ll need pumping at about 10-12 years.

Randy- I suspect that we will need a twin tank mound system before we can sell this place someday or maybe sooner if the tank starts really leaking.

My lot perked and they made me get it anyway. At that time the county was run by serious tree huggers. In retrospect the $12000 was well spent maintenance wise, but got the hump in the backyard. They wanted me to do a 3 foot mound, which ends up about 5 feet tall 60 feet across, I negotiated to a 1 foot mound which is actually about 3 feet tall and 25feet across.

My poor flagpole is looking bad, I should take the tractor around and lift it out, but the wind is blowing so hard I’m afraid it would end up on my head.

I meant to tell RNG that RS posts all the time in friendly politics, just not here. I just checked and he’d posted about 25 times there today, I got out of there a few months ago and rarely visit.

I hear they’re giving free prostate exams over there?

Given a similar sociopolitical environment I/We suspect a similar requirement for our property.

Your flagpole is interesting. Around here it could be considered "art."

To maintain a "friendly" and 'respectful' political dialog is very difficult, maybe impossible, nowadays. IM"H"O many elected pols from any party come into politics well intentioned, but are soon coopted by the money, power, and greed and find their "Dark Side."

If I offended anyone with the previous posted statement. i apologize.

The NWS has upped the potential snow accumulations to ~12" around here. We are at 1400', I doubt the 12".

I suspect the VT and NH people will be +12" (elevation dependent).

Our septic system is over 60 years old. Have had it pumped out 4 times in the 45 years we have lived here. Living in the middle of 3 large gravel pits tell you what kind of soil we have. The only people that have septic problems around here are ones that use garbage disposals, and water softeners that are hooked to septic systems. Why someone would do those 2 things is beyond me.

Drew, think we found the pear blooms you showed us the other day. Wife said it was snowing but I think it had to be your pear blooms. Ed

 I was just teasing her about that last night. She's a professional dog trainer, and has trained our cats as well. It's not much of a stretch to think she'll have somewhat trained chickens, too.

We have HughesNet, Jay. It's the only reasonable option where we are besides dial-up, and it's awful. It's slow on clear days, and just shuts down during bad weather ... you know, when you really want to see the radar. That's the one thing I really miss about living in town; high speed DSL with no data limits.

An upside of the rural village layout in Europe is that at least for WISPs it pays to build the link. Our top speed is 12Mbps down / 1Mbps up, but it sure beats the satellite internet I suffered with working on a farm in TN ages ago. RNG, would the WISP not be willing to add infrastructure if you sign some X-year contract?

I'm just looking now for skates for myself, to see if any will go an end-of-season sale. For kids there is a very neat option 2-in-1 where the same boot accepts a roller blade or ice skate blade. Too bad they don't have this for adults. I like the idea of less clutter. Unfortunately for kids, the figure skating style skates are all in very girly colors. I guess young boys aren't supposed to aspire to figure skating.

34F right now......beautiful clear blue skies.........just watched an eagle fly over a big field and thousands of geese take flight......awesome.

PJS- I believe that HuhesNet is the only real "viable" satellite internet provider around here, and your complaints are similar to the complaints I heard here.

At least we have DSL (so far today). I would be lost w/o all the different radar sites that I frequent daily.

Winds and snowfall are increasing. Wind gusts are guesstimated to be ~+30mph. I/We could lose our electricity today. Well see.

Yeah, I’ve seen pear blooms mixed with rain all day!

Just had a 48 mph gust, sustained at 25-35.
