That could be part of it ... another is avoiding hybridization between species (something that is very much frowned on by avid hobbyists)

Still another part is to isolate newly acquired fish before introducing them into a community until one is sure that they are healthy.

One more would be to segregate by size or spawns.
You raising any salmon? I love a good smoked salmon.

Ed, thanks, it was the EA digger I looked at too, just forgot where to look this up.

Now I bet RS could make one of these diggers from scratch...his assembly line looks full at the moment.
Never any shortage of things to do around here ... only a lack of will ...

Happy National Bacon Day. Kiss a pig, or something.
How about eating one ?

Pork would be a nice change. Yesterday was our fifth consecutive day of eating turkey. My wife cooks up some very tasty dishes with it, however I can't deny that the novelty of eating this once-a-year treat is beginning to wear off
Once per YEAR ???

FWIW, I'm hoping The Woman will make the traditional family New Year's meal: mashed potatoes and gravy and pork sausage dumplings (<--- to die for) cooked over a bed of sauerkraut ... just like Grandma used to make.

That sounds good. My mom always did kraut and pork for new yrs.

Interesting posts this morning from potatoes to fish tanks.. Wife has a 70 gal tank very nice she says it's relaxing. Well she is at the lake and I'm home with this thing and found that it might look nice but is a real pain in the *** to keep clean, and yes it can be more expensive than a tractor habit, $400 for a filter.
DABSGT,

Yeah ... the maintenance can be killer ... especially if it's a display tank that's meant to look nice.

Fortunately (for me anyways), it's a good bet that when it's all said and done here, I will only have a few display tanks ... all the rest will be for breeding and raising fish.

And all the racking will have drain lines attached to the front ... so I siphon the crud off the tank bottoms without too much hassle.

Other than the one big tank where I'll use a sump filter, I'll be using sponge foam filters on them, which are pretty cheap ($5 - $10 apiece) and can be cleaned pretty easily.

They won't really be all that pretty ... just functional.

Aquafaba or aqua velva

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! (50% anyway)

It is Aquafaba. That's Spanish for bean water. After cooking a batch of chick peas in the Instant Pot I poured off the water and that water is thick and is called Aquafaba. It can be used as an egg substitute for meringue.

Whoa, that's a pretty serious setup. You thinking about a business venture?
Might sell a few ... if I have some success in breeding/raising them.

Hopefully at least cover the cost of the hobby ... :D

I have one 10G tank of Julidochromis that has around $150 - $200 worth of fry in it currently ... probably half of them are ready to go (IOW: big enough) (There would probably be more ... if I had moved the older fry out earlier)

I'll need to tear down the tank to get them out though ... not real easy to do with at least one cat always wanting to "help" ... and they are incredibly quick fish.

Really need to move that breeding pair to a 20G Long ... minimum.

Also have some Melanochromis auratus fry in another tank that are ready to go ... maybe 6 - 8, dunno for sure ... they are really fast-growing ... and incredibly aggressive, towards other fish ... and each other.

Hope your wife is doing better and you guys get home soon.

17F with the occasional snow flurry @ 14:30, sun trying to peek thru from the south.

Floorplan, major grid = 1', minor grid = 1":

There's a sanitary line in the lower lefthand corner of the above image (in the white box, sticking out from the wall) ... which I'll tap into for a drain and a utility tub. Need to punch a hole in the wall and install a door to get to it though. Probably close off the existing opening and turn it into a utility closet.

A couple of renderings, with some of the walls removed so you can see into the room:

That was about the square horizontal footage of my setup but I only had two shelves high around the walls
<snip>
You probably mentioned it before, but what fish are you keeping currently ?
<snip>

Salmon in the freezer. My travel schedule for the last 40 years precluded keeping anything at home. Even fish need attending once and a while and sometimes I'd be gone for a month or so. Heck, it's hard enough to keep a wife.

The cold is getting to me, feeling lost, can't understand what RS is building, but seriously impressed by those drawings, and Billy is putting Aqua Velva in his food, what's happening here? :D

have this bad feeling I missed/skipped over some concise explanation for RS's project, but last I understood he was fixing up his fish tanks.
Probably more accurate at this point to say that I'm fixing up a place for my fish tanks ... ;)

The whole purpose of the exercise is to get everything consolidated into one place (that isn't the living room ...), and make it as easy as possible to maintain them.

And allow room for eventual expansion.

Yeah ... that 3rd level on that one rack of mine was pretty tough ... the top edge of the tanks on the top row is at 76" high ... and the ceiling is only 89" ...

It will require a small step stool or step ladder to service that top row.

Ideally, I'd have at least a 12" opening above the tanks on the lower and middle rows before the next shelf above it ... but I'm hoping that since the tanks are fairly shallow (12" - 13" deep) and will be bare, the 9 1/4" will be workable. Going with 2 x 3's for the rails would buy me another inch on the openings ... but I'd need to find some that are at least 99" long, rather than 96" ... unless I wanted to rip my own ... and I don't.

I might be able to go little lower on the bottom shelf (bottom of the tank sits at 12" off the floor) and grab some space that way ... but I need to check the height of the connection to that sanitary line ... I need 2" of slope for the 16' run of that rack to get it to drain properly ... so I'd need to be able to make the connection at 10" or less.

Southern tradition mandates black-eyed peas and collard greens. And corn bread.

My son in law has taken cooking the peas this year, unless I wanted to. I certainly could, but he and my daughter have been trying so hard since Lynn died, that I wasn稚 about to take the job away.

Fried clam strips... :cool2: Steamed with butter...:drink:

We do fritters and fried razor clams.........limit is 15 per day......on a good day......we're done in 5 minutes......if they're not showing......it can take an hour. Fun time......I prefer the early morning digs later in the year. Stay warm!!!

Sounds like some good eating. As for the Cold Porter, Night and Day is my favorite song of his, but I also like I've got you under my skin.
