Rick,

Here's a pic of the soil screen frame with the 1" screen on it:

IMG_1121.jpg

I actually made an error in my previous description ... the 1" screen has the most 2 x 4's in it ... looks like one every 6" O.C.

I think I did that because I was going to be using it to screen stuff that had some pretty good sized rocks in it and felt it needed the support.

Looked at the gravel screen yesterday (buried behind stuff in the barn) and I think the spacing was 12" O.C. rather than 6" because there really isn't any large rocks in it and I can control the rate at which I dump it.

You can see some of the grass/weeds that gets caught in the screen.

Here's the results. The screened pile in the foreground is about 5' tall and 10' in diameter:

IMG_1122.jpg

The pile in the background has been through the screen several times and still has a lot more in it that could be sifted out. The majority of the screened material isn't any larger than probably 1/2" to 5/8" generally.

The frame that the screens sit on was built from 2 x 2 x 1/8 wall square tube, 10 gauge sheet, and a couple of pieces of 3/8" x 3" (?) x 6' long angle for the two runners on the bottom ... plus a few short pieces of 1/4 x 2 bar stock to keep the screens from sliding off. The 10 gauge is probably overkill ... 12 gauge would probably be fine ... but it should hold up long-term. (Same deal with the 3/8 angle runners ... 1/4 probably would have been fine)

Based on my experiences using a wooden frame for the base (and having to rebuild/repair it a number of times), metal should be much more durable ... particularly if you are going to move it.

Will try to get a few more pics. Let me know if the have any questions.

Ran into an old acquaintance over the weekend that was planning on a move to Washington state to help care for his elderly mother and father. Big change for he and his wife, who will both have to find new jobs. Elder care is hard for everyone involved, Rip. So many things that can only be accepted as they are, and just keep going. The hospital social workers can be wonderful guides.

I'm guessing there are special circumstances involved. I hope he and his wife have absolutely no regrets about relocating, and he is better off moving, otherwise the logical thing would be to move the parents close to him.

Those are some impressive results, RS. Lots of nice topsoil in that pile, all for some scrap and a little elbow grease.

Gotta question for you, though. I noticed on the 1" screen, the 2x4s in the middle run from top to bottom. Wouldn't that orientation prevent some material that would otherwise make it through the screen from going through as it rolled/slid from top to bottom on top of the 2x4? Would turning the screen 90 degrees would prevent this and give you a higher yield?

I think they're both pretty burnt out on the San Francisco Bay Area, and both feel a move to Port Townsend will be a nice change for them. Still, that's a LOT of change all at once, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them...

Good evening all. Back from Missouri Ozarks :). According to Wunderground, today's low was 68F and the high was 90F. Cold front went through, tomorrow low 57F high 82F and DP below 60F !! Today was 450 mile trek beck home, started with flat tire on van. Aired up tire, found piece of steel in tire, put on spare . Had to reload van left about an hour late. Finally found a tire at a Walmart got in on the van in about an hour, but lost another 1/2 hour looking for tire or repair. Got home without further problems about 7:45 PM :cool2:.

59 right now...and, per the weather forecast, that's where it's going to stay today. 100% chance of rain too...

Randy, I'm going to add my thoughts, prayers and support during this very difficult time...I wish both you and your Mom the very best...

Woke up and bounced out of bed this morning without any need for an alarm clock. Is that because I felt refreshed, full of energy and eager to get on with the day ? Not exactly, but that's what I told my wife and she almost believed me for a few minutes, whereas the truth is more related to the reluctance of ageing body parts to store water any longer than absolutely necessary.

RS, thanks for showing the pictures of your soil screen, you have given me some good ideas there to spend a little more quality time with the welder. As well as soil, I have many tons of roughly broken tarmac to sort for repairing tracks and something like that could probably seperate out the bigger chunks that need crushing nicely.
Main question now is how high up on the to-do list I can sneak that in while maintaining something resembling marital bliss. It is always a fine line between getting the no-real-harm eye roll, or the long stare that has consequences ... no apple pie

woke up to thunderstorms, going to be a wet day here. And that means almost nine hours driving in the rain up to PA, well, slow and steady.
Randy, if it's your Mom's time, so be it, be at peace. If there's a big collective man hug we can all send you, you got it.

Decided to make my own sandwiches instead of road food, lot healthier, so off to pack cooler and car.
Choice of 95 or Delmarva. Both about the same time.
Eenie Meenie Minee Moe
95 is easier, until it grinds to a total halt, but less traffic lights.
I'll wave to MossWoods as I go by his exit.

65 going to 69 before falling later in the day.
Hopefully some rain coming in...enough to wet the fields I planted yesterday, since the storms went just north of us.

May get the mowing done this morning that I didn't get to yesterday.

Put the grapple on the tractor...got some small oak logs to move and then cut for firewood soon.
