Curious about your prep process for repainting ... what do you do to kill any rust you encounter ?

Mostly I use a bead blaster, but various wire brushes also come in handy.

When I run into really bad rust, I use POR-15 Metal Prep, then follow it up with one of their Top Coat paints. The Top Coat is a new product for them and me, but I've had very good luck with the Metal Prep and their old two coat system.

I stopped using acetone when I learned it was a carcinogen. That and the can always seemed to be empty when I reached for it, as it's very hard to seal it in. My local bulk fuel and lubricant supplier also stocks cleaning solvent, and a five gallon can lasts a looooooong time, even if I just leave it in the parts washer. I also have an old brass bottle with an air fitting on it that lets me squirt the stuff on bigger parts that won't fit in the washer. Got it years ago at Brownells, but can't seem to find a link to it now.

The most important step for pre-painting prep is to always start by cleaning the parts with soapy water to get off the oil and grease. If I skip this step any wire brushing or blasting just drives the oils deeper into the metal, and they'll come out as fish eyes in the paint. A bucket of hot water and a couple tablespoons of Dawn dish washing soap get things started on the right foot. I repeat that cleaning after all the sanding is done. In fact, I'll usually add a few drops of Dawn to the water used for wet sanding, as it helps keep the paper from clogging. Anyway, clean water rinse, blow off with filtered air, one last wipe with the dust rag, and it's ready for shooting.

Now if I could just find a way to keep the bugs out of the paint...

Some might say I'm a terrible shopper. I might go to 2 stores, but refuse to be like some folks that make a list and then hit every store for what's on sale. TractorByNet

David, sounds like we could shop together and get along very well. I really don't like to shop, I don't even like having to go to town to shop, so the faster and simpler I can make it, the better. We have a warehouse chain out here called Winco, and I get the bulk of my groceries there. Some things are better quality at Costco, but prices are usually reflective of that quality. I try to make up for it by having lunch there, as the dollar fifty hot dogs are hard to beat ;)

So much for the slightly cooler day that was forecast. It's 99F right now, with a heat index of 109F. I did get in a couple of hours mowing, but also got in a couple of hours laying at the river. Here is Avery, my grand-niece, displaying her dragonfly whisperer skills. Coming from Denver to the Larro Ranchero is quite the shock, heat wise. She wants to be in the creek or the river all the time.

Larro, wonderful pic. What is she laying on? As long as it's not the back of a giant alligator...

power went off about twenty minutes ago, called it in, lady called back and said a truck had been dispatched and they would look into it promptly. What a nice response. Well, gives the Generac a good working out. Actually not too hard, i manually tripped both hot water heaters off so the two a/cs when they kick in will have an easier time. Plus I pushed the thermostats up a degree. Suppose I should go look out front and see if there's any excitement on the street, like a pole down. My neighbor's backup gen is running also so I know it's not just me.

power back on after off for 45 minutes. City of Washington truck came up the driveway, listened to my gen, listened to my neighbor's gen, went down the street, and about fifteen minutes later with a loud CLACK the automatic 400 amp service breaker tripped and power was resumed. and a minute later all was quiet in the neighborhood. City of Washington doesn't like it when the propane companies get the business instead of them...;)

Thanks Dave, it was very educational, and makes me appreciate my Kubota all that much more. I think I would love to find a rock in my fields... Any rocks you find here are old spills of concrete from cleaning trucks.

Be careful what you wish for.... :D

Today was rock digging day. This ~1/2 acre area in the field is carpeted with large rocks. After everything settled some were just too high out of the ground. WV is a beautiful place but they also have lots of rocks I think. The thrill wears off.

75F this evening. 86F today and sticky. This afternoon was dead calm and the air had a blue haze to it.

Drew, I almost added, while laying on an old mossy back gator. But it is the boat-ramp border.

85 tonight with a heat index of 94. High was 96 heat index got to 118. Didn't do much until later in the evening. Had to go through an observation this morning with our son. Doctor wants him talking more than he is. Thinks some therapy will help but it's a process to get him approved for it. A long process. So that was a day killer anyways. Now waiting on reports. Did finish loading somethings on my scrap load that didn't get there before we left. Recycling place was closed on the 3rd so couldn't unload before we left anyways. More storms tonight predicted. Hopefully not much rain. This place is swimming and things are dying from water log.

73F and partly cloudy @ 22:00 ... possibility of a thunder shower overnight and then the possibility of more tomorrow.

Got all the previously cut grass from last week picked up with the Trac Vac ... six loads worth. I've probably started it a dozen times since I got the final adjustment dialed in on the carb ... has started first pull every time, no choke ... in fact, about half the time I only make it halfway thru the pull cord before it fires off and catches ...

I'm likin' this ... :D

Wife finished up mowing the front on the parts that just needed cut and not picked up while I did some weed whacking ...

After that I weeded the bed of hostas on the north side of the shop we planted about a month ago ... got that about 1/3 done. Hostas appear to have really taken off.

Gonna grab a shower and then head up to the shop to work on the left side hydro unit for the Simplicity.

Good morning. Got up a little earlier this morning to bring in the lambs that are now on their way to market.

IMG_20150714_074855.jpg

These were weighed and sorted on Sunday. All those making the grade were marked with a red dot, so all we had to do this moring was take off the ones with the red spots on their rumps.

For those of you looking for alternative ways to remove rust, have you tried electrical removal ? Electrolysis is not an instant method, taking hours or days, but works really well and is particularly useful on on delicate or difficult to access parts, such as inside holes or threads. For anyone who hasn't tried this, all it takes is a low voltage/current power source (e.g. battery charger), some washing soda (sodium carbonate) and a piece of sacrificial scrap steel. Dissolve a little washing soda in water, then suspend in the solution the part to be cleaned and connect to negative. Partially immerse the sacrificial metal a little distance away in the solution, connect to it to positive and watch it fizz until all the rust has gone.

Best not to use galvanised or stainless for the sacrificial anode, or it will give off toxic gasses. With plain steel you only get hydrogen and oxygen, so not a health problem - unless you happen to be smoking at the same time. :)

There are lots of references on the internet - these are the first couple I found today :

70 out now but going up to 93 today. Likely a shower this afternoon so I need to get back on the mowing early, finish the lawn and then the field. In between a lunch with my builder to find out what indigestible unaffordable amount he wants for a storage garage.

I've been having no luck finding another boat. Mid summer pickings start getting slim...two boats I wanted more info on had just gone under contract. What shall be shall be.

My friend got home to PA safe and sound; said the Avalon was sure more comfy and quieter than his diesel Jeep.
Now I have that half cleaned out garage to deal with. Half clean does me no good; all I'll do is put more stuff in there. Need to get it all cleaned out so the truck will fit in. by winter....no sense rushing into these things...;)

I have graves on my property I trim carefully around, but they are for a horse and two large dogs. They loved the one dog so much the prior owners put a nice headstone with a picture on it.

Eric, good chemistry. Does that work for teeth whitening?

tuesday, July 14th. What are you going to do special today?

60F now mid 80's for high, good chance t-storm late afternoon.
Might do little trimming if not to hot after work.

Enjoy the day all.

poured second cup of coffee. 67° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 78° with thunderstorms in afternoon. Thunderstorm came threw about 3:30 this morning. Woke dog and me up. Project to put rotary cutter on did not get done yesterday. Remembered that LED lights on ROP bar did not always work. Tore switch box apart. Put it back together several times. Did not work when assembled. Gave up and ordered heavy duty switches from Amazon. Plan to put rotary cutter on today.
Drew, I never understood the concept of having a garage and having it full of stuff instead of cars. :confused3:
David S, RNG, not a shopper. Wife and I do not do well shopping together. I can spend hours shopping on the computer. She can spend hours shopping at a big box store.
Good Morning All.

Good Morning, we have a nice 74 degrees here with a high going to 93 with 40% chance of rain. Rain chances increase over the next 4 days to 60%. So if I can get home before dark, I will try to get some fertilizer out on the pasture. Need to spray weeds out there too. The dog would appreciate it if I mowed the yard, he doesn't like tall grass tickling his butt when he goes.

Hey Drew, remember good things happen at the right time. Maybe your boat isn't for sale yet and will show up after you are done with the new storage building. You don't want a boat to sit because you don't have time to use it.

So Farmer, are the new chickens coming if you are ready or not? They have to go somewhere, right?

Eric, How many lambs did you take to market? How many do you keep for flock growth?

Ron, I have never had a garage that housed a car. Tractors don't count. I have 3 sheds, 2 carports, and trying to build a pole barn if I can figure out the best place for it and all 3 cars sit out in the rain.

Well I have to go to the paint store and pick up 40 gals of paint and take it and supplies to one of the new jobs I got while on vacation and set a crew up.

Hope everyone has a good day

68 going to 91, maybe more rain.

Kev - great pix from your trip. Looks like a special place.
Eric - caught up on the pond saga - great story, especially good news on your wife. Thanks for the info on rust removal.

Speaking of shopping, took my wife out for her first trip since last Wednesday's surgery...just to Chipotle and then the grocery store - while inside, a thunderstorm snuck up on us and I got soaked loading groceries...I was nice and picked her up at the door. By the time we got home it was all sunny and nice enough to go for another 2 hours mowing.

Good morning! 74˚ heading to 90s, breeze from the south @ 9mph. The last short shower we had was July 4th and the grass is turning brown for the first time this summer.

Just waiting for the sun to come up so I can see the dangers that lurk (snakes) and can connect and grease the grapple. Grapple day at Dad's, that means a minimum of 4 hours seat time!
