Low of 20F this morning. Expecting mid-30's & mostly sunny today.

Thomas I envy your dump run. Not possible around here anymore except for recycling materials. I can leave used oil and hydraulic fluid at the town hall recycle shed, somebody picks it up for their waste oil furnace.

I can deal with most of it but I have 2.5 gallons of used antifreeze coolant from the tractor that I have never figured out how or where to dispose of properly. The jug has been sitting in the garage for about 3 years now and the tractor is due for another flush and replace.

My guess is the auto repair places in town just put it down the drain into the sewer system because they don't seem to have any recycle or disposal plan when I asked them what they do with it.

Here where I live they charge an eco fee when you by stuff, so I just take used oil, oil filters and antifreeze right back to the store where I bought it.

There is trouble trying to find a place to take used antifreeze down here. Maybe I should put a pinhole leak in my vehicle and let it trickle out as I drive like everyone else? jk.

22 on the T-Stat this morning. Chickens water was frozen, so I put out the heater this morning.

Yesterday was day 365 "with my own place" after months spent crashing at friends houses. Had a couple friends over for dinner last night to celebrate.

Bunch of stuff going on here, but nothing to report yet, so mostly I'm lurking...

Yesterday I also did my first test run on using the giant wood stove in the basement to assist in heating the house. I fired it up about noon or so, warmed the basement up, set a fan blowing on the stove, and one blowing up the stairs to the living area. left the basement door open. it took a few hours but slowly the temp upstairs climbed (they did not remove the insulation under the main floor???). The furnace never came on all evening and well into the night. I forgot to add wood when I went to bed, and remembered at almost 3am... I looked and it was down to a single ember (I've been burning up all the junk wood that has been sitting and rotting for the last 4 years, it's poor quality). I decided not to get dressed and get wood. 5am the furnace came on... At 9am the stove was out, but still warm.

I'm gonna cut some good wood soon and this should work (when I'm home and remember).

Be well all,
David

This 5 day cold spell has burned up my small amount of firewood I keep onhand. Need to go chop some more and work out my "Joe Dirt Guns" (biceps). LOL

Good morning all. 19F this morning, clear but will be clouding up this afternoon wind calm. warming up to 36F today and snow this afternoon and Sunday, total less than 2 in. We are on the fringe and may not get any snow. Have to get new tarps for the wood pile and tarped before snow, and saw/split more wood.

Interesting about the lack of anti-freeze recycling. Here pretty much all the recycle centers take anti-freeze. Several take more than motor oil, such as hydraulic oil but with a 2 gal. max. So I made 3 trips.

   / Good morning!!!! #26,574
Our "recycle center" is a small shed and a roll-off dumpster. Paper, cardboard, glass, tin cans, aluminum, #2 plastic. The town really has nothing to do with the used oil, it's just a central place to drop-off for people who use it to pick it up.

Thomas, we have annual area hazmat collection days but our town selectmen hardly ever pony up to allow us to use it. Each town needs to pay something to be included.

Good example of the unforeseen/unintended consequences of laws/regulations/rules ...

Here there's a little repair shop across the street from Autozone ... that guy will take it - apparently uses it in his repair jobs and/or sells it ...

That would be an unintended consequence when he names you as a co-conspirator to fraud. We can only hope that used antifreeze never crosses a state line.

I've been splittin' it as I bring it in to burn ... with an old axe head and sledge ... usually while seated on a small rolliing mechanics stool ... lol ...

I've about burned up the quaking aspen and the ash trees that I cut down a week or so ago.

Ahhh ... I don't think that is very likely ... the fellow appears to be honest and it appears to be a low end shop, mostly serving the folks that can't afford to buy a new jug of Prestone ... from what I could tell from talking to him, they know what they're getting ... ;)

Well, that's good. I wasn't too worried.

Well, now that I've had lunch, I'm off to the woods with the leaf blower ... to see if I can scare up the other half of the PTO shaft for the wood chipper ... lol ...
