I think you'll like that Focus. Of course the Focus replaced the Escort and there's been a number of changes, but we bought a new 1993 Escort station wagon with a manual transmission, and in more than 100k miles, the overall average was 32.585 mpg. When my wife totaled it, we bought a new red 1999 Escort 4 door sedan with automatic transmission; only put about 39k miles on it, but the overall average was 32.982 mpg. Generally, I think the newer vehicles get better gas mileage than the older ones did, so unless you have a lot of heavy traffic to drive in, I'd expect you to do even better than that 31 mpg.
