Good late (Friday) arvo. Overnight Low of 10C and a High of 19C, cloudy and a heavy mist rolled in about an hour ago which was predicted.

More de-cluttering going on. I did apply 2 coats of 'stone sealant' on a section of indoor decorative stone/tiling that was tuning to dust. In between coats we all went to the Pyengana Cheese 'factory' & café for a late lunch and a beer. It was great to see that the café was almost packed with tourists after these past few years of restrictions.

On the upside of having both of my visitors, I've been eating like a king as both of them have been practicing their culinary skills... each of us are single so cooking for more than one has allowed us (OK, them) resurrect recipes, especially spicy curries and 'Mexican' styles.

Drinking first cup of coffee. 50° with cloudy skies this morning. Heading to 53° with rain. Weather forecast is a little misleading. High will happen in a couple of hours. Then temperature will head down to low 40's. Shopping went good yesterday. Got everything on list. Plus some crab legs at a decent price for New Year Eve dinner. Gas went from $2.54 to $2.69. I got the lower price. They were changing price as I left station. New on off switch is installed on Lathe. Took longer than planned. Going to to install new door lock today. 4th try.
This is closest I have gotten a male and female Cardinal in 2022. My hope in 2023 is to get them perched next to each other on one limb.

after a week in the deep freezer, temps are warming for next week, 50's most days.
surprisingly warm for this time of year; timely considering cost of fuel oil this winter.

Unfortunately not all OCD clean, but they might organize their piles.
oh well, this is me, a far better piler than a filer...

My piles have become get to its...put off til the last possible moment. Like having to go through all the paperwork for
tax receipts. Shortly I'll have to do that, and this big cardboard box in my office full of who knows what will get carefully gone through.
An annual process I really dislike.

the joys of retirement, and in some ways....unfortunately, not having a wife to harp at me to
pick up my stuff. Living by yourself and staying neat can be challenging.
But then I ask myself loudly, who else is coming to pick this up?
So then I work on the piles a little.

am wondering if Ron feels this way at times. I think we both miss getting yelled at.

got all the outside lights put away yesterday afternoon, will work on tree this morning.
Basically killing time before I go off to be tortured by endodontist at noon cutting open my jaw to extract that
small piece of dental pic out of me. What a way to end the year...

26 outside this AM, heading to lower 60's. Anyone will take lower 60's and sun, this time of year.

I'll have to get on the porch today and enjoy it.

Wife is doing OK, last night, no oxycodone for first time. Yippie!

I have some errands to do today, so she will be by herself for a few hours. Good way to end the year, independent and moving about.

TGIF and thank goodness this year is over (almost). Less challenges and stress in the New Year is my wish.

My wife never yelled at me. But I am sure she had her ways of making me do it her way. Even today i do not have clutter that you will see when you enter my house, garage, shop or to barns. Just do not look in the 3 drawers in built in cabinets in dinning room. Almost to the point where I cannot find what is stashed in them. I have put it on the to do list today. Not much comes in paper work to me. I am almost totally digital. I do have the receipts from this year in a small basket. Will put those in a ziplock bag with this years date on it. Will put it in a file cabinet drawer. While there I will take out the ziplock from 2016 and burn it. My wife started this. Still works today.

m7 - sure hope that hand doesn't hurt as badly as it looks. Micro spikes can be your friend walking around the property if icy. Thanks for posting that Stihl video yesterday...was timely...I used a sling rope to get up high and pull a large broken branch with the tractor. Now it's cut and in my box next to my splitter. But I do have one more to take down.

Newbury, I had to use a come-along for the first time last year to pull a tree in a method like you described. Very handy.

Kyle, sorry to hear the whole family is sick. Prayers said.

Good Morning
It’s 30 and might make 55 under sunny skies.

Yesterday kept me busy all day, starting with cleaning up downed tree. I ended up using the Stihl MS261-CM and the carryall to haul it to the brush pile. It didn’t warrant the grapple. I’m impressed with the Stihl, it was the replacement for a 25 year old O26 that apparently got run on straight gas on my son’s watch. I tried to get a new piston and cylinder for it, but we’re only available aftermarket, which I was leery of.
Next chore was to replace a tie rod on the KubVan, that job had mission creep as once under it, saw a torn CV boot slinging grease, and an alternator belt about to fail. Fortunately those were all VW Rabbit parts and all readily available.

Then son came by to shoot, which worked out well, as I wanted to tweak the sights on the Kimber Micro 9. They are only adjustable for windage, and that is by pressing them over in their dovetail. I have a fixture that works well for that, applying pressure with a threaded rod. Zoe was totally unaffected by the gunshots, she is on her way to being a very well adjusted dog, I think that she has grown an inch in the last week.

Today might be a Costco run, and I need to go to the airport and fill some gas cans. I use Avgas in all my seasonal off road equipment, it stores for years with no issues, and I have never found an engine that doesn’t like it, and I’ve been using it for at least 30 years. It does contain lead, so it’s a no-go for anything with a Catalytic Converter though.
There’s a few people that want to come visit Zoe, and my mechanical contractor buddy has an alligator bite, so I told him I would cover his emergencies. Hopefully the warmer weather will keep them at bay.

I've had too many trees that were caught from falling by their neighboring trees. MOST of my trees are small deciduous, like maple or gum, < 24" DBH. What I generally do if I can get near to it with the tractor is tie a rope or chain around it below where I can easily get to it with a chain saw. Hook that to the tractor so I can pull perpendicular with plenty of distance for safety, often using snatch blocks.
CAREFULLY "notch" the tree as high up as I can easily swing my 60CC or 90CC saw.
Go back to the tractor and pull until it breaks.
I had one a few years ago that I had to use a come along on because I couldn't get the tractor within rope/chain distance.

That’s what I have done, except usually with the pickup and winch (because that gives me an extra 90’ of cable).

Check your local sheriff’s auctions - I know our auctions in the surrounding counties always have chainsaws, usually stolen items that, by the time the case is over, the original owner had to replace it out of pocket and doesn’t bother coming back for it. The last auction we went to in September had no fewer than 22 chainsaws, most of which were in decent shape, some of which were parts saws, and except for one electric no-name were either Stihl or Husqvarna.

you might get a donor (or yours may become a donor for ) saw for cheap that way.

Good morning, low temp was a warmish 42 and the high going to 50°F. Wind S 11 gusting to 17 mph. 60% chance of showers.

Today I will definitely get at the front chains. I know what is wrong with the right front...I need to cut a crosser out of the busted set I have laying on the side and stitch that into the installed set. Some cut off wheel work and a bar and 4 clevises and it should be done.
Junior is the muscle power and I am the designer, works good as long as he LETS me design.
I think this will be a good way to exercise the genny. Hook up the angle grinder to the genny for load and get to it.

Today will be dedicated to the tractor. I have other stuff I was putting off to a warm day and today is IT.

Tomorrow will be a dump run day.

slept late this morning - 6:45.
woke up to 32F, going to mid 50’s, although cloudy and damp.

we had a good day out yesterday shopping with mom, did some administrative stuff in town, had a great lunch (first time eating out since before thanksgiving, due to mom throwing out her back and then all of us getting bronchitis) and shopping at WallyWorld.

Today is BigBox Home Improvement Store and specialty shops for what is not available at WW, then up to the woodlot with the dog and chainsaw - maybe today some wood will be reoriented from vertical to horizontal. . .

Good Morning all,
It's presently 46F under clear skies after an overnight low of 36, forecast high of 57.

I love it when a plan comes together!! I must have walked around the tree a dozen times sorting out which way it wanted to come down, how hung up it was in the other tree, how well connected was the busted off section to the tree trunk... that sort of thing. I also remeasured the distance from the water to where the tree was. Seems when the county marked off where the Protection zone was when we moved in, they measured wrong. Cut the wedge out below my cut line. Saw bound a little bit which told me I was correct in which way tree wanted to go. After the wedge was cut out I started on my final cut, 1/2" at a time then run back to safe spot and wait for a few minutes to see what happened. After about 6 cuts, when I ran back to my spot I heard the cracking start, turned around and watched the tree come down exactly like I wanted it to. It all came down nothing hung up. I didn't use any ropes, I do appreciate the info/video on using a throw rope. I don't have anything like that now, but will have on order before the end of the day.
Today's job- clean up the tree mess.

Liz is heading back to NC so even before coffee I need to help her get ready to go.
