Good Morning Everyone!

A rainy low 40F start to the morning; still raining and the temperature is in the high 40F’s presently. The PM should see temps in the 50F’s with periods of drizzle/showers. A good day to putter around inside the house; maybe swap attachments on/of the tractor if I get “motivated.” I would not bet money on that happening :embarrassed:

Ted- I hope that you and the new Chief have a + working relationship. This could be a mutually advantageous working relationship. Take it easy today. I agree with Ed.

Roy- That’s too early.

mpham- Please take care of the arm.

Ed- Please take care of your back. Those “portable” A/C’s seem to get heavier each year.

For all you returning to the working world; please take it slow.

I hope that everyone has a decent start to the workweek.

My thoughts, wishes, and prayers.

Roy, good luck on BBQ. We gave our oldest daughter our nice big stainless Costco propane unit a few years ago after we got our Traeger. We still use a small propane BBQ for hotdogs or something quick, but everything else on smoker...

Your assembly story reminds me of when my brother was buying his Brinkman smoker/BBQ from Home Depot.. He asked to buy the display unit, salesman wanted to sell him one in a box. He finally got through to them, he wanted the one already assembled, not a boxed one. He was finally able to buy it, took some persistence.

Got up early Saturday morning and hooked up the 3pt sprayer... sprayed the yard, took several tanks. Was relaxing when middle daughter called and said she was one the way with some trees. She had loaded 5 trees (douglas fir) from their new property with the backhoe and was bringing them for us to plant. Two were larger (perhaps 10' high).. it took a couple of hours to get them planted. We have been watering several times per day, hope they all make it (too hot to transplant really, but she was taking them out to cut a new driveway, so they were being removed anyway).

Edit: I took off the FEL to reduce weight of tractor on lawn. I had forgotten how easy it comes off and goes on..

59°F and clear skies this morning, going up to 81° today. This is day #2 of our brief mild weather respite. Back to 90° tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Wife and I visited a large mom-n-pop garden center about 40 miles northwest of us on Saturday. She's been looking to replace her grandmother's concrete bench formerly under the pecan tree. I found this place on the inturwebs, and they looked like they had a fairly large inventory of concrete statuary and benches, all molded and finished on-site. They certainly did, too. We found stuff we didn't even know we wanted (I hate places like that). In fact we found everything except the bench she wanted. The lady who makes them said she had one she was working on, but it wouldn't be finished for about a week. We bought it anyway (will go back for it when she calls), along with a new top for the twin swans birdbath and a life-size border collie statue. After lifting the dog into the truck bed, I'm going to guess that thing weighs well over 100 lbs. Wow. We also saw a bunch of really cool stone lanterns that would look nice in the new zen garden. I'm certain we'll be spending more money there this summer.

After we left there, I took her to an old drive-in restaurant in Wood River IL called Charlie's Drive-In. It's been open since 1950. My Father took me there a few times when I was a teenager, and he used to go there when he was in high school. It's typical drive-in fare; burgers, hotdogs, fried stuff. Everything is exceptionally good, and the carhop service is a nice throwback ... although I guess not technically a "throwback" since they've been doing it for 68 years. They make their own root beer, and are probably most famous for that. It's the best root beer I've ever had. Wifey thoroughly enjoyed her cheeseburger, and I had my usual pork tenderloin sammich. Good time.

Sunday morning we played golf ... finally. First time out this year, and it was obvious. We played terrible, but had a great time nonetheless. We went to a local course in Breese IL, just east of us off US-50. We like this course, and it was in pretty decent shape. We were going to play 18 holes, but play was so slow it took us 2-1/2 hours to play the first 9. It was 12:30 by the time we finished the 9th hole, and they'd started a tournament at 12:00, so we decided to call it a day. We went to a local diner in town for lunch, then back home.

Finally got the gas and diesel cans vented yesterday with those yellow plastic vents we found on Amazon. I didn't get to mowing the pasture, so I guess I'll find out how well they pour now when I fill the tractor for that, maybe one evening this week after work.

Roy, we have the five burner version of that Dyna-Glo propane grill. I guess this is it's third season. At some point during the winter, the drip tray fell off. The little C-channel rails that hold it are attached with rivets, and one side rusted through. I haven't looked yet to see if there's still enough metal there for me to tack weld it back in place. When I cleaned the grill grates last weekend for the first time this year, they were terribly rusty. It seems all of the ceramic coating is long gone. We looked online to try to find replacements, but everyone either doesn't carry them, or are out of stock. Needless to say, we are quite disappointed in it's lack of quality. Works fine, but seems to be falling apart entirely to fast.

Been moving stuff from the garage to the tractor building, already had four tractors in there, getting a little full. Most of it rolls or attaches to a tractor so it’s easy to move at least.

Drew, reading about your hard work and generosity have me somewhat conflicted.

Years ago when early into our Hawaii Island experience I thought about having a somewhat expansive garden on our 21 acres with the idea that I could contribute to those in need similar to what you are doing. In our location there can be an over abundance of various orchard offerings and limited garden crops. Unfortunately, gardens like I grew up with, lots of variety are less common due to a number of factors, but smaller, often indoor versions are more common. Seems our wetness can take its toll along with certain critters. Mostly this translates into a lot of work to get rewarding results, especially as you expand on varieties. We have had small successes on very limited scale at various times, a few bananas, a single papaya tree, hydroponic lettuce, green onions to name a few, but with the exception of bananas nothing really shareable. Well possibly another exception would be our chayote squash which it seemed people seemed to walk away if they saw us approaching unfortunately I managed to kill off the vines with some past fencing activity.
Sadly, the most deterring factor was the experiences of a good friend a bit south of us. A good part of her life was dedicated to doing for others. Husband retired once, back to working because he was bored, no kids, they had the time and the means. Quite active in their church, she spent several years trying to get food to those in need. She would find and organize gleaning outings. Sometimes after a sweet potato harvest, maybe overburdened trees dropping their fruit from lack of picking. Problem was unless her friends showed up, very little was gleaned. Sadly, even those she knew as being food pantry beneficiaries didn’t show, always one excuse or another, but always willing to accept a box of anything. I have repeatedly said that hunger should not be a problem on this island. If one saw the food that just rots away, you’d weep. But there is almost always some sort of food drive going on. Sad to say, but in most cases those growing the food or organizing/running the food banks work harder than the beneficiaries. Sadly, that’s my problem. I’m quite willing to offer a hand up, but draw the line at those strictly wanting a hand out with minimal effort on their part. Perhaps in part that in my poorer times I never expected anything for nothing. Something my parents often said: God helps those who help themselves.
Anyway, my friend did give up after a few years. Of course she is still actively involved in other efforts. I suspect she is totally involved with the volcano relief as the main relief activities are walking distance to her house.
So good for you, Drew and your unselfish generosity. And while reading and following your efforts does cause me to rethink, my decision remains unchanged.

We've had a cooler than normal day; started at 66 and has gone up to 82 degrees. And before 9 a.m., we got about .23" of rain, for which we are grateful. And this morning about 11:30 a.m., our Spectrum cable (Internet, TV, and Telephone) went kaput. It finally came back on after about 6 hours.

David, thank you. I was chatting with a volunteer and we laughed about the fact he had actually seen Mercedes come in and as we were talking an older black E class
came in, dropped someone off, and parked across the street to be less inconspicuous I assume.

Local food bank requires every "client" to be financially vetted every single time they come in. Income verification, expense verification. Super burdensome process but someone, some
larger donor, does not want to be gamed. Nor would any of us.

One full box of veggies, onions, garden peas and lettuce taken in this morning, and nice seeing the red potatoes all bagged and ready for distribution tomorrow at the end of the big table.
All the non boxed or canned food is laid out here, they go through a labyrinth of shelves to get food like peanut butter first.

We the guy is going to start in the morning an the HP. I have a small window ac unit in the boy's room and will try again to put one in our room in the morning. Started to today and found that I forgot to measure the height of the window opening and missed it by 1 1/2". Took it back and bought a smaller one.

JB thanks and you are right, they are heavy and don't balance well at all.

Have a great evening. Ed
