Yes, it’s very tough on critical care nurses. Good friend is one. She said she see’s too many dying.

Daughter worked in Pulmonary intensive care when Covid started. After a year of it, she transferred to ER, as it was taking a toll on her.

good morning all.
.37 rain last night and still pretty breezy out there. I wonder how many of my neighbors remaining leaves I just inherited.

David, can't wait until we see little tomatoes growing in that greenhouse. Though a greenhouse in Hawaii I'm sure is used for different plants than
they are here. What are your plans?

I'd love to get another greenhouse. Might be able to engineer a simple cold frame addition to the side of garage. Gets direct afternoon sun so will warm up in there.
Of course then I'd put in a really big garden in that open lawn in the back yard. Perhaps getting a bigger garden shed was a good idea long term.
I look at Don's winter veggies and just drool.

Putting in a garden means a real restriction on traveling. Need to chat with my SIL and see if she will tend a garden so I could take off for a couple of weeks. Want to take the train
to California next year.

Of course that would mean a rototiller. No more buying them....will ask my friend with an old Troybilt to dig it up for me. Lot of rocks here, typical New England soil.

Bird, sounds like a fun, tiring and very successful outing. It was 64 here yesterday. Weather sure can be all over the place...

went to get an apple pie from local market to give as gift. Wow. Price went up from 20 to 24 dollars a pie. Almost like selling it by the piece.
I bought apples instead...

Good morning, low 28 high to 41°F. Wind WSW 15 gusting to 21 mph. A mix of sun and cloud.
Next Friday the daytime temps will get down below freezing again.
We dodged most of the freezing rain bullet. We also didn't lose the power, a few flickers but that was it.

Today I will go out and clean the inside of the loader bucket and coat it with pam. I did the concave side of the back blade last week with Fluid Film. That gets expensive so pam will do and a lot cheaper.
If there is any pam (2 cans) left then I will do the convex side of the blade.

Lottery has not been good for me as of yet. Only won $5.oo on a $104.oo ticket, but it is good for 52 draws bi-weekly. 6 months. I get one in spring and the second one in fall and play the same numbers yearly. It is a steady 1 million $ draw with 1 million $ encore.
It will only take a million $s for me to retire totally.
I go halves with my stepson on the fluctuating lotto max, so far no joy.

Have a safe day all

Good Morning.
It’s 39 and only going to 44 today under a clear sky.

Yesterday I tinkered with some brackets for the carryall to get the trash cans a little higher. Probably install them today after I take wife and her goods to Farmers market this morning. Her car threw a batch of coil pack codes yesterday, so I’ve got her stuff all loaded up in the KubVan. She decided that she didn’t want to drive it, after I had her take me for a test ride. I think it was a combination of no power steering and the visibility requiring reliance on the mirrors.
So I’m off to the farmers market shortly. I’ll go back and pick her up this afternoon.

Daughter worked in Pulmonary intensive care when Covid started. After a year of it, she transferred to ER, as it was taking a toll on her.
I think for many health care professionals this has been like going through a war. Physically and emotionally draining.
Used to be folks transferred out of ER to reduce stress...shows you how times change.
My late wife was charge nurse at Capitol hospital in Trenton. There wasn't a shooting or stabbing she didn't like...professionally. 18 years of that and she
was just worn out. Then she did pulmonary and oncology in specialty practices. Even worked for a plastic surgeon in N. Miami when we lived there on our boat.
She absolutely loved that. Gorgeous women would come in with suitcases of cash. What an interesting niche business.
Hey these folks don't wash their own cars. They hire detailers. And these women would get lipo for the tiniest amounts, the pursuit of perfection.
So sad really. All the wrong values. My brother just got back from Ft Lauderdale and remarked "everyone there is to see or be seen", a constant parade of attractions,
mixed in with the crass and superficial.

Most of us do not have to deal with life or death decisions in our work. Medical folks do. High rate of drug abuse, perhaps to combat the stress.
As Paul says, it truly takes a toll on you.
Front line folks, military, fire, police and medical, lot of folks working hard to keep us safe.

I always take Entemann donuts into doc offices. With chocolate ones included. Never fails.
Yes it would be better to take them apples or oranges, but they really want those chocolate donuts.
And Entemann's makes a fine chocolate donut.

Buppies, hope you are feeling better.

33° right now...high around 40°. Kind of a gray day, but supposed to be sunny later...hopefully dry the place up a bit

Was nice sleeping in today...normally up and about between 0315-0500
No plans, other then paying a couple bills and continue watch "Babylon 5", a Sci-Fi series from the 1990's

Added:
Might be one chore to do...a minor rearrangement of the garage so it'll be easier to get to the extension cord and outlet for the Deere's block heater. The work will consist of moving the Gator and Mower out of the garage and moving the portable genny to a different location (which I should have done originally)

I was just watching the TV news about the tornado damage in Kentucky. I've been to the scene of at least 4 tornadoes shortly after they happened, but never anything that bad. And on the Fox 4 news they mentioned that Carter Bloodcare in this area is sending blood. Sure makes me glad I donated blood again at Carter Friday; two days ago.

Good Morning!!!! 44F @ 6:00 AM. Rain likely. High 49F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall near a half an inch.
A gentle rain started falling last night at around midnight, and so far it's accumulated to 0.35". Weather person is saying we'll get a dose of wind today and tomorrow. The forecast is calling for steady rain until Tuesday afternoon, when we'll get a little break, then more for Wednesday and Thursday next week, another break, and more rain starting a week from Monday. Almost as if Mother Nature is trying to make up for lost time.

Mr. Squirrel's winter coat looks nice and warm, Ron.

A few years ago, Bird, I had to go to an Apple Store on Black Friday to pick up an iPad I'd ordered. Drove around for half an hour looking for a parking spot, which turned out to be at the complete opposite end of the mall. And it was a big one, too, with three levels. Absolute mad house. I don't think I'll be making that mistake again. Glad you two survived and are none the worse for wear.

Yesterday started with a coat of paint on the saddlebag mounts. Didn't take long to figure out they were gonna need two coats.

But the painting didn't take long, and I was soon back in the saddle on the tractor, hitching up to that big tree I was wrestling with a few weeks ago. Still couldn't get it to budge, so I went after it again with the Makita chainsaw and got another limb off of it that was stuck behind another tree. That did the trick, and I dragged it over to the growing wood pile, with the tractor facing down hill and the tree out behind. I thought I'd left just enough room to back out between the tree and a large rock pile, but I didn't see a root sticking up, and the rear wheel on that side couldn't get enough traction to make it up and over. The downed tree wouldn't let me move over, so it was back on the chainsaw, bucking 18" lengths off the trunk. I was very lucky that there was just enough of an angle that after half a dozen cuts I had the room I needed to get out. I've had to call a neighbor before to get hauled out of a similar situation, and that was somewhat embarrassing. With all the rain coming in over the next week or so, it might have been next summer before that tractor could be got up and out of there.

That got me thinking about getting a set of chains for the tractor. I've used them on a 4x4 pickup truck to get around in the mud, and wonder if any of you have had any luck using them on a tractor?

By then almost six hours had gone by since that first coat of paint, and the mounts were ready for another one, so I took care of that. Went up to go get the mail in the side-by-side, and it was cutting out more than usual, so I decided I'd better replace the fuel filter with the one I got in town last week. I hope whoever designed that fool thing gets permanently assigned to changing fuel filters because it was a royal PITA to even get to. And the two bolts holding the metal guard over it were in there so tight I had to use a 1/2" ratchet handle and all the extensions I had to get 'em out. Had to wear a headlamp to see what I was doing, they were so far down inside the engine compartment under the dump bed. Then the fancy fuel line clamp I'd purchased didn't work worth a darn, and I lost about a quart of fuel when the old filter finally came out and I could get a pair of Vise Grip pliers on it. The leak left all the parts under there coated in Diesel mud, and soon I was covered in it, too. But I was relieved when I tried to blow through the old filter and found it almost completely clogged, and was elated when another run up the hill and back under full throttle came off without a hitch.

With all that fun going on I missed lunch, so that was it for the day. A spaghetti dinner and a glass or two of wine got me back on track, then early to bed and a good night's sleep.

Not sure what I'll get into today, but it won't be outside except maybe to ride up the hill and get the mail. Yeah, there's supposed to be a Sunday delivery from Amazon.

Hope you all enjoy the second half of your weekends.

Chains do work in the mud, the old double ring style are especially aggressive in mud you will either go in the desired direction or down in a hurry.

Good afternoon! It is 40 and sunny. Was a frosty 24 when I got up this morning.

Had a very intense storm early afternoon yesterday. Lots of wind and rain. Was coming home from the eye doctor, saw a 10 deg temperature drop in 3 miles in the storm. Lots of limbs and dead ash trees were down. It was windy rest of the day.

Just got home from the weekly grocery run. Not sure what I will get into today.

Last year was a bit different. Today was a lot less active than the prior day!

Got the blood draw and the ****** Youth trashing my room. Was able to read the results now that I had my iPad.

Renee was my day shift nurse again. We did get to talk and catch up today.

Got a visit from a former co-worker. He had actually reported to me for a while on a “special project”. He quit to become a nurse, and now was I charge of the floor. We talked and caught up. He was concerned how long the catheter had been in. He contacted Dr. M, the catheter was removed and I learned to use a bottle.

The volume of sludge coming out via the NG tube dropped dramatically again. Somewhere around this time, the nurses began using the NG tube to give me certain meds. I was also really feeling the effects of no nourishment for weeks. But, an order was in to have a pick line installed.

Shawna was my night shift nurse again. She seemed fine and spent a lot of time talking to me.

Everyone stay safe out there,

Drew, the plan is still very much a work in progress., a combination hydroponics and dirt. Salad stuff, leafy greens, herbs, and a trial and error of things we like. Probably a small area for seedlings for the outdoor garden. My goal is something sustainable with minimal work. Not an on your knees weeder person.

Working idea, 3 row gutter garden, think small toot crops
2 areas of hydroponics, likely 3 rows each, with ebb & flow type hydroponics. Independent solar for pumps, grow lights, etc.

40F and sunny @ 12:00, heading up to a high of around 45F for the day. The next three days will be sunny with highs in the 40's and 50's. 60F by Thursday ... but they are calling for rain. After that the temps drop, with highs only in the 30's and 40's.

Had howling winds, rain and thunder when the storm front came through, with gusts over 50 mph. High made it to 56F. Rained enough overnight that there was standing water in the low spots on the lawn.

Heard some trees cracking over in the woods, but didn't hear any hit the ground. Lots of sticks to pick up off the lawn though. Fortunately no big ones. Might run over the lawn in a couple of days to blow leaves off once it dries up a little.

Hopper, two sunflower tube, and two suet feeders refilled back on Friday. They're due for a refill today. Also about a gallon of whole corn scattered on the ground for the deer (that was all gone by the next morning)

Got white worm cultures fed.

Got another 50 or so daffodils planted Thursday, also replanted two of the recently planted irises which someone had pulled out of the ground ... may have to put up the electric fence if this keeps up ... Probably more bulb planting tomorrow.

Woman brought down white feather hostas from Eden Brothers on Thursday, which were up in the mailbox, when she rolled in. They looked to be in good shape but no packing slip, is only 1/3 of the order, and that order doesn't show up on their website. Looks like it's time for another email. Planted those in one of the square containers in the old aquarium stand planter.

Watered banana tree which is putting out a new leaf at the top and hibiscus, one of her hibiscus just bloomed ... so grow lights seem to be working ... (y)

Hibiscus and Banana Tree.jpeg

More cleaning/decluttering/organizing done in the basement over the past several days. Almost to the point where I have enough room to lay out some wood and start applying finishes. First up will be some poly on sheets of 3/4 plywood for workbenches. That will be followed by Gloss Black Rust-oleum on some 2 x 4's for fish tank stands.

Got 1/4 inch collet and nut installed on router, along with the new 3/8ths bit and edge guide. May do some practice runs with that later today.

Holes drilled for dowels rods for perches and for L screws in roost box, dowel rods cut to length, seams all sealed up, front door installed. Still need to do a little sanding before I can stain it. Might do that here in a bit, since it should be easy to heat up the garage today with the torpedo heater. Already hauled belt and quarter-sheet sanders up from the basement, just need to bring the roost box up.

Need to take take up the recycle bin with the Cub and dump cart to the can at the road first though as it's full, along with some trash.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe Sunday ... (y)

long morning at church. Once a month we have meeting for business, and they always seem endless, and right at lunch time too.
Our head church leader is out very sick, big operation, complications, still in rehab, no idea when she will get back.
So a few of us have had to step up to keep things going. And now they want me to temporarily head or co-head it for next six months.
It's an honor and would be hard to refuse.

I accepted only if they would find a co-Clerk. I've held most other positions other than Clerk.
Maybe it's my time. Never thought I had what it took, I've always been too alpha. Have to be super humble for this position. That worries me too.
These are very gentle people, and as head administrator I can't just jump on normal business best practices.
There is a way, and there always has been a way, and I have to follow it. Would be the same in a synagogue or a mosque.
Since we aren't talking about religion per se, just community activities and keeping busy.

in perhaps a few ways, it does keep me out of the bars... :)

David, hydroponics, very cool, using your own caught water I'm sure.
RS, plants look good. Being next to that glass really helps.

maybe a nap before my sister zooms me at 4.

   / Good morning!!!! #142,398
David, hope the greenhouse grows a lot of stuff for you. While I don't eat many leafy greens, I do love the bean sprouts they serve at some of the Korean places.

rs, your place is going to look like the Queen's garden when all those bulbs come to life. Maybe better.

Kids performed in Christmas pageant show at church today. All is well on that front.

We didn't quite freeze this Am, but I believe the Jack frost will do it's job anyway. I still have roses blooming.

Prayers for Bupps and Topps, and anyone else in silent need.

For our location in Graves county Kentucky the outage bwas 33 hours. We did not lose local grid but our problem was the part of TVAs grid feeding substation and they have that back online that might be a temp fixed but anyway we got electricity and it's nice when it's freezing at night thanks. They're talking 3 weeks where the grid was physically destroyed but since everything else was pretty much destroyed there will be no one living there for a while anyway.

Mid forties all day and windy. We had our car club Christmas dinner last night. I slept late today and missed church, I don’t normally do that.

I prayed for those in the disaster of the tornadoes.

Talking about garbage can lifts, I built this. I also built one for my three point hitch.
