73F and "Fair" @ 11:00, with bright sunshine ... supposed to be headed up to a high of 85F.

The Woman and I mutually decided that Romanburgers sounded good for dinner last night, so in the interest of killing multiple birds with a single stone, she headed out to make the pick up from Mr. Hero and also hit HF to return the belt sander, and swung by Ace Hardware as well to pick up another set of Speed Dee saw horse brackets since they were all close by. She also grabbed some twine to string up her sweet potato vines.

While she was doing that, I did some more compost screening ... and apparently managed to interrupt someone's trip to the new free, all-you-can-eat hosta bar as I was dumping a bucket of screened soil:

IMG_1165 copy.jpg

Woman announced yesterday afternoon that she finds separating and picking through the hosta clumps to be "therapeutic" and relaxing ... probably a good thing, as we have lots more available ...

I need to finish prepping the bed around the large maple tree and then turn her loose on planting them. She already has a 5 gallon bucket full of 'em, with likely even more on the way today. She wants to increase the density of our plantings so that the areas are covered quicker, we've likely got the plants, so sure ... why not ?

Can always thin them later.

The 1" x 12" special order cedar board that I'm going to use to make the bottom shelf for her aquarium stand planter has come in, so that needs picked up at some point. It's a 6' long dog ear fence panel ... so I'll have a 2' drop left over that I can use to build a larger hopper feeder (assuming all the board is of decent quality)

I suspect that some mowing will be on the agenda for today, as well.

Beyond that, need to get the 2 x 4's cut for the new saw horses and get those put together.

There's a bunch of sanding that needs on some boards.

And some pressure washing that needs done on some items down here at the house.

The exterior block on the shop needs repainted but it really needs pressure washed before I do that and I was thinking about how to accomplish that without having running water up at the shop and it occurred to me that the unused 65 gallon sprayer tank could be strapped onto a pallet and filled and then I could just use the loader to raise it up for a gravity feed to the pressure washer. Seems like that ought to work ...

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ... (y)

I completely understand that guy's stance, RS. Pretty much any time we try to sell something on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, it's a struggle. People either don't show up, or show up with less money than agreed hoping we'll take it just to get rid of the item. One guy recently wanted us to ship a large item to him, even though the ad said "pick up only." Another lady didn't show up one day after The Wife had rearranged her schedule to be there. When The Wife sent her a text message asking if she was close, she replied that she wasn't coming because she didn't realize how far it was, and didn't want to drive that far for the item.
Too many people are just inconsiderate.

I hear ya ... almost makes me think that having a yard/garage sale might be a better way to go, assuming one has enough stuff to do it:

Put up one ad that doesn't require responding to individual inquiries and let the folks stop by at some designated time ... or not.

Of course, then you have all the work involved in putting stuff out and on display, dealing with weather (rain), etc.

We've made the same observations on fast food here as well.

Biochar, I need biochar. A good garden needs good soil and good soil needs a good medium for microbes to live in. The best medium is biochar. When microbe dense compost and biochar are mixed I'll get the best organic soil. The people that have access to a burn pile are lucky. They can make theirs easy. The biochar is the black charcoal kind of glassy finish (not ash), the charcoal of incomplete burn. It's a little harder in town to make it in a BBQ pit. Of course Amazon sells it also for $60 for a 5 gallon bucket. Amazon.com : Aries Green Biochar Soil Amendment 5-Gallon Plastic Bucket – USDA, IBI Certified – 100% Biochar : Garden & Outdoor

Think of that next time you let your burn pile go to ash and maybe throw some sand or water on it toward the end of the burn and break up the charcoal and put it in your compost pile.

Heard about Biochar a while back, while I was watching YouTube's on spreaders.

This past week I've been using the loader to dig out the old ashes from the burn pile and dump it on the compost pile.

One of my earliest memories of gardening was putting in a backyard garden where we emptied out an old 55 gallon "burn barrel" of the accumulated ashes and incorporated that into the soil.

The plants in that area grew like crazy.

Hope your mowing goes well ... (y)

Dr happy with progress, adjusted med schedule, revisit in a month.
In town longer than anticipated so didn’t get back to mowing.
About to got to friends to celebrate their being here 10 years. Just a small gathering of 4 couples that we haven’t seen much of this year.

Sounds like good news ... and a good time ... (y)

67°F and .24 inches rain. Hope not to soggy when I start mowing. The flail doesn’t particularly like the thick wet grass.

Was appreciating what a diverse group we shared last night. Retired oil engineer, housewife, solar company sales, former airline attendant, retired army officer, legal secretary, hospital pharmacist, computer engineer that did specialized military projects - no wonder we get along

Hand and Foot this afternoon. Don, we’re rooting for you to regain #1.

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

It's only 44 up in the mountains and it looks clear as a bell on the webcam, so sure wish I could go for a long hike. I've been doing well since my surgery Friday...a good nurse is my wife. Had a scare last week before my surgery, but have a good surgeon. Not able to do much physical for 6 weeks, but was able to roast 3 batches of coffee yesterday and watch some baseball.

Glad your recovery is well underway 🤙

Biochar is not ashes, it is charcoal (all black, no white). Ashes are not good for my already high alkaline soil here. Regular bagged BBQ charcoal has too many additives and all the tar and gasses may not have been cooked out. I'm still trying to figure out how to make biochar here.

I had read about this new drug in the experimental stage and my doctor was also aware of it.

Eli Lilly jumps 10% after it says it will seek approval for its Alzheimer's drug following designation as a breakthrough therapy by the FDA

Shares of Eli Lilly jumped as much as 10% on Thursday after the company said it would seek accelerated approval for its Alzheimer's drug candidate, donanemab.

The announcement from the Indianapolis-based firm comes alongside news that the FDA designated the drug as a breakthrough therapy, setting it up for an expedited approval process. Donanemab met its primary endpoint in a phase two trial earlier this year.

Investors are likely bullish on the potential approval for Eli Lilly's Alzheimer's drug candidate, given that the FDA recently approved a controversial Alzheimer's treatment, called Aduhelm, from Biogen. Many argued, including some scientists on an FDA panel reviewing the drug, that the data provided by Biogen was insufficient to receive approval.

Eli Lilly said it would file for accelerated approval of donanemab later this year, even though it is still in the midst of running its phase 3 trial of the drug. Eli Lilly's decision surprised one Wall Street analyst.

Goldman Sachs analyst Terence Flynn said in a note on Thursday that Eli Lilly seeking accelerated approval for the drug "is ahead of our expectations as we believed there was a likelihood the FDA could have requested additional safety data from the ongoing Phase 3 trial."

Flynn added that the potential approval of donanemab could "lead to questions on nearer-term market share for Biogen's Aduhelm." Shares of Biogen fell as much as 7% in Thursday trades.

Goldman Sachs rates Eli Lilly as a Buy with a $270 price target, representing potential upside of 24% from Wednesday's close.

Bird, I hope it’s something you can use.

Mowed my yard, this was the sixth mowing on six gallons of fuel. When I got the tractor it was using that much for 3 1/2 mowings. At 115 hours the fuel use almost dropped in half. I also moved the stone for the two stone gardens out of that fuel. At first I thought it used a lot of fuel for a 25 hp tractor, I’m much happier now.

Here's a photo of what goes wrong when your torch regulator blows out. I would not tell anyone else what to do or how to fix it but I have resorted for my personal use utilizing viton rubber and make my own sealing surfaces.
Billy, Guppies,BEF, hope y'all get better.

Popgadget and I have been helping Makita sales lately, I just ordered the cordless hedge trimmer.
The forsythia bush at the end of the driveway needs to be kept trimmed or it blocks my vision looking for
traffic. Once again I go into Amazon and it says you bought this in May of 2016. Yup. I wonder who has it now, bet
it's still running fine. Since I have the batteries it only makes sense, since I only have to buy the tool.
I have a lot of finishing work to do in prep for cladding the house so I am looking at the (Brushless) Makita Compound sliding saw. It comes with 2 batteries and charger and work table for around $1500. I already have a Makita hedge trimmer, drill and sawzall so it will join the family. I also have some Ryobi tools which I am happy with. I have been a Makita fan since the early '80s.

Had a bad dose of gout yesterday in my big toe. Could barely get around. My good girl drove to town and got me my Lengout tablets. Much improved this morning. Attack came on in about an hour after dinner. Usually I wake up with it.

Alien, sorry about your toe. Tart cherry juice worked well for me.

Ken, fine looking broccoli.

Don, I think it's going to be a melon or a watermelon. In that spirit, here's one I grew in 2018 in NC
I got good local training on how to thump a watermelon.

One of my Wife's cousins is married to a carpenter. He was telling me a couple weeks ago that he recently bought a cordless DeWalt Framing Nailer and a couple of 9-hour batteries, and the batteries actually last all day. No more hauling around a power generator and a compressor for remote jobs. No more dragging long extension cords and air hoses either.

After seeing this YouTube I am now declaring it most likely a cantaloupe. The leaves are heart shaped.
