62F and partly cloudy @ 22:15.

Rain quit in time for me to get one of the hoses off and head for NAPA before they closed. A bit tricky though, as one end of the hose goes onto a fitting on a hard line which has fairly thin walls and would be easily bent. The reason why it was tricky is that four lines all terminate in roughly the same place, and there is just not much room to get a wrench on the hard line to apply counter-force while torquing on the hose fitting in the opposite direction. But somehow I managed ... :D

As I was heading out of the driveway I ran into my neighbor who I had called about the spanner wrench coming down the drive. He'd tried to return my call but wasn't able to get through so he came on down ... so we headed down to the house so he could put eyes on the cylinders.

He does have two of the adjustable spanner wrenches: honkin' large and small(er) ... but didn't think the pin on the smaller one would even be small enough. Which was kind of what I figured.

He also has experience replacing cylinder seals - including urethane ones - which he says are a complete #$%@! to do ... at any rate he offered his help if I feel I need it. He'll probably be getting a call ...

Of course that all took time and by the time he left it was about 5 minutes before 17:00 (time the local NAPA closes) so that trip went out the window.

Perhaps just as well ... while we were standing around jaw-jacking I noticed the hose I had gotten from NAPA a couple of years ago (without the purty green strip) had developed surface cracks ... granted, the hose has a pretty extreme bend in it (around 180 degrees) but still not good. I think they changed over their hydraulic goods in-between the time I got the first hose from them and the time I got the newer one. (The newer one is Eaton Weatherhead hose - which I'd assume is decent quality ... but who really knows these days ?)

Some nylon hose sleeve is probably cheap insurance against UV damage.

At any rate, the revised plan at this point - since I'm waiting on the spanner wrench to arrive anyways - is to order all six hoses (2 for the bucket cylinders, and all 4 for the boom cylinders) from DHH ... just a rough guess, but I'd imagine that will save at least $60 ... will order them on Tuesday, and if I'm lucky I should have them by next Friday.

Once the new seals are installed, the cylinders will get degreased, cleaned up, sanded, and fresh coat of paint applied.

Depending on how it goes, I might even order the seal kits for boom cylinders as they're reasonable ($40 each) and rebuild those next.

We have 5 of them including two in the family room, the others are off brands that my late wife like the look of. After 8 1/2 years the Hunters are rock solid and whisper quiet, the off brands have varying degrees of wobble and noise.

When I built my house, I put in HD Hampton bay ceiling fans cause I put one in every room. 5 downstairs and (now with garage addition) 5 upstairs. I’ve had to replace at least 3, one burned, lucky it didn’t start a fire. Only 1 original was hunter. All the replacements are hunters. I have a spare brand new hunter in the garage waiting for another Hampton bay to fail.

Good morning, strong west winds have been stripping the new leaves, at this rate all the ash trees will soon be bare. It seems the gusts are coming all the way from America, did you all start your fans up at the same time ? :confused2:

Ron, really nice picture of the cranes.

Good morning, it was a tad chilly in the boat last night (49°F) and going to a high of 81. Wind WNW 4 mph. Sunny.

Because I have no flares, I cannot leave the slip so I will use the boat as a floating cottage.

You guys stay safe

65 degrees this morning, going for a high of 87. It's been raining off and on since midnight and I just went out and dumped about 1.25" of rain out of the gauge. It's not raining at the moment, but more MAY be coming. Today is opening day for the Denton County Community Market; Homepage - Denton Community Market

I guess it may or may not get rained out.

57 right now...high in the upper 70's today.
Chores...do some trimming with the weed trimmer, mow the field and continue a job my stepdaughter started which is raking out an overgrown (weed) flowerbed. I picked up some heavy duty barrier cloth and once the weeds are gone, we'll lay the cloth.
There's also two dead trees I'd like to drop....they're not too big (5-7 inch trunks, maybe 15-18 feet tall).
That's about it...

I just came in and read this thread.... guess what.... that was exactly what I did! Chains (S hooks) slid to one side the first try (because pile of stone in front of one trailer wheel). Cleared that out and on second try, worked like a charm, dumping all the stone exactly where I wanted it, then pulling the trailer out of the way, spread a bit of it out. A little bit of bucket grading, touch up with rake and ... wahlah....done!

Congratulations, Ted! You're showing real RedNeck potential there!:laughing:

Drinking first cup of coffee. 57° with light fog this morning. Heading to 76° with cloudy skies. Yesterday was pretty much a wash out. Light rain most of the day. Need to get lawn mowed today. Next 5 days call for rain everyday. Back to weeding and spraying weed killer before mowing. Our Governor has extended stay at home another 2 weeks. :mur: Maybe this will be the last. June 12th.
Dogwood flowers.

Randy, nice landscape project.

RS, good idea on the other cylinders.

Roy, I use my pole saw to do most of my limb trimming. Even on a tree that has dropped. No bending over.

Everyone stay safe and healthy.

Good Morning All.

Turns out the cylinders have the smaller pin holes (3/16") ... which saved $10 on the wrench.

In the past, I've had some luck using twist drills as pins, then match drilling holes in a steel plate to hold them to fit the holes in whatever I'm trying to unscrew, and a big Crescent wrench on the plate to exert torque to the drills. In one instance where the holes were radial instead of axial, I just put some gloves on and used my hands. I also made up a similar tool to keep the transaxle output flange from turning from some 3/4" x 1/4" bar stock. A long piece to act as the wrench handle, a shorter piece bolted to it to form a "Y", the bolt acting as a pivot. Holes in the end of each accepted bolts that went into the flange, with washers on the "Y" to make up for the gap. Could do the same with drill bits instead of bolts, and weld on a piece to the end the "Y" to fill the gap. But probably better to just buy the tool, since you appear not to be in a hurry. I'd have been tempted to buy both sizes, because you never know when you'll need the one you didn't get. I don't at all blame you for passing on the dealer's "friendly" offer.

I have 3 Hunter ceiling fans. I did not know that they are no longer made :(

If my experience with Hunter fans is any indication, I'm not surprised their business failed. I had one a few years ago that wobbled following their installation instructions. Called them, and instead of trying to coach me in the installation, I had to send them a part of the first fan as proof of purchase, and then they sent me another fan. Couldn't get that one to stop wobbling, either, and took it back to HD for a refund. Purchased a different fan, and it wobbled, too. That's when I noticed that the blades were out of alignment vertically; it wasn't a weight thing at all. I was able to add shims between the blades and fan arms to trim them into alignment, and the wobble was cured. The Hunter fans used rubber grommets between the blades and arms, so that wouldn't have worked. Both fans came from China, no surprise for the HD house brand, but I was disappointed that the Hunter wasn't made in the USA, considering what I paid for it.

Careful with low mounted tail lights, license plate.

I've learned to move the mounting brackets for tail lights and license plates to where they won't get smashed due to my poor trailer backing skills...

Last week I smashed a tail light lens on the office trailer while I was working next to it on the trench. Hit it with the Kubota side-by-side, while backing up.

As many times as I致e tried I can never conclude my spending $10k for a dump trailer is justified, but I keep watching CL and hoping....

Around here, law enforcement loves to pull over guys pulling dump trailers. They're almost always overweight because the drivers are either trying to cut corners by making fewer trips, or they don't know any better. The fines are pretty steep. For as little as I would use one, it just works out better to just hire a trucker.

59F and cloudy @ 08:00, humidity is 66% and there is a heavy mist/fog hanging in the air. Calling for a high of 77F today, with a pollen alert issued.

Ten day forecast has morphed from looking like something resembling the run up to Noah's Flood or befitting a temperate rain forest ... to a veritable heatwave: only two days out of ten are visually showing rain, and Tuesday is characterized as "Very Hot" (... with 100% chance of "cactus" ...)

Calling for dew points to be up around 70F ... which will make it even worse ... :(

Plan for today:

Work inside down here at the house until it warms up a bit - probably until around 12:00 or 13:00 then head outside for various projects.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe Saturday ...
