I found myself leaning into the curves.

I often override auto high beam control, on both truck and car, because oncoming car is coming around a corner, lights aren't detected yet
by my sensors, but I can sure see the car coming so I dim the lights manually. Our eyes and brain will, for the forseeable future, always be better than
radar, except perhaps at night.

Yes, the old caddies had that option.

RNG, thanks for video, I couldn't tell, is that a booster line (1 inch) or a regular 1.5 inch line? What psi are you running?
Booster lines are usually on a reel and a lot easier to handle but
won't flow the same amount of water of course. I think it's great you have this capability and sure hope you get a big credit on your homeowners insurance

It's been years since the video was made, Drew, and a while since I've seen that line, but as I recall, it was 1.5". It is on a hose reel, there's one on each side of the truck just back of the cab.

The insurance company doesn't know I have the firetruck, and I'm almost afraid to tell them for fear of upsetting the applecart. I especially don't want them to see that video!:laughing:

Good Morning!!!! 49F @ 5:45AM. Plenty of sunshine. Areas of dense fog. High 59F. Winds light and variable.
No rain since midnight, but we picked up a quarter inch at around noon yesterday, bringing this latest series of storms total to about 1.75". I'm starting to see weeds popping where I missed spraying/scattering the pre-emergent; didn't take long.:banghead: That's OK, though, as the RM43 has glyphosate mixed in to take care of sprouting plants, and it's easy to mix up another tank.

That Bimmer I had came with auto wipers, and they didn't come on when they were needed, and did come on when they shouldn't have. I've been spared the luxury of most of the automatic features you folks talk about, and the added complications, too. But I'm glad to see such progress as it means that at some point I'll be able to hobble my way out to the garage and mumble "take me grocery shopping" to my autonomous car, which will then get me to the store while I take a nap. It'll drop me off at the door, right next to where they park the ride on grocery carts, and come back when I mumble into my phone to come get me. By then I'll be so worn out I'll be ready for another nap.:laughing:

You know how when you lose something, and then go out and buy another one to replace it, the one you lost shows up the next day? Well yesterday was that day, for a GoPro camera I picked up on sale last year. And I'm somewhat embarrassed to say the lost camera was right where it should have been, in a cardboard box labeled "GoPro" in big letters right on the outside. I'd rifled through that box several times looking for it, but the little 1" cube of a camera was tangled up in the webs of a head mount, and both being black, I missed it. The new camera sports higher resolution, image stabilization, and voice control, so I'm still happy I got it, especially with the Black Friday/refurb price tag. But it turned into a time sink, too, to get it set up, paired with my phone, and then fool around transferring some video I found on the memory card up to YouTube. That half gig video of the motorbikes took almost two hours to upload:shocked: Not that I sat there and watched it, but it sure slowed down anything else I did on the internet while it was going on.

One option on the truck I find hard to get use to is the auto stop, it's ok if it only worked at red lights but there is a delay when you accelerate to make a left turn when there is a break in on coming traffic at an intersection. I end up shutting it off in heavy traffic.
When I was a kid a local charity had a fund raising raffle first prize was a 55 Buick that was 20 years old, I won the car, it needed an exhaust manifold so it was parked until I could find one. One day I came home from work and my dad handed me $50 and said he sold the car and thought the cash was better.

Good afternoon. A lovely sunny day here, almost too bright for driving. We made a trip out this morning to a large toy store to collect a ride on dumper truck for the youngest grandson this Christmas.



Not surprisingly it was fairly busy for this time of year, hate to think what it's like later in the day, or the weekend, though the staff were very good, making this sort of shopping a pleasure. A comment from the last one brought a smile, he said "Do you wish you had a tractor for Christmas ?".

My moms 58 Pontiac Star Chief coupe had auto dim headlights. My late wife’s 86 STE had auto dim and rain sense wipers, but they were not perfected, sometimes an overpass or tree shadow would get a swipe of the wipers. My 96 Seville STS had both and they worked fairly well, still get a mystery swipe sometimes with dappled shadows.

57°, half inch of rain overnight more coming later. Cold air is moving in midweek, then a little milder weekend.

Me too and although the thing can be easily turned off, it goes and resets every time the vehicle is parked up.

The word "Automobile" seems to be getting ever more appropriate as more things are made "auto", though I admit some are genuine improvements. One of the best for me happened in the 80's, when automatic chokes came in instead of manual chokes. I've had some miserable manual ones, where you had to do a computation in your head to work out if it need 5/8ths or 3/4 of the way out according to temperature/humidity, or just pull it all the way, accepting it would flood the engine anyway if it felt in the mood, crank, wait a minute then try again.

:laughing:Yep, my first car, a 1946 Chevrolet had that manual choke. And one cold night I was parked in a head in parking spot that was slightly downhill to the curb. I pulled the choke out, started the engine, pushed the choke in, eased out of the clutch and killed the engine. Repeated that process a second time with the same result. So the third time I started the engine, I gave it plenty of gas, popped the clutch and snapped the rear axle right in two. Aaah, yes, 16 year olds sometimes learn the hard way, and I learned how to change an axle the next day.

I gave up, going to buy another truck and dump this before all the electronics go up in a puff of coordinated smoke. And it may be an older airbagged truck with none of this except normal cruise control.

Fortunately the only engines that I work with a choke on are the older gas tractors and they are all manual.
Oh and weed wackers and trimmers which are all manual chokes.
I miss the ability to get an engine up on a fast idle for keeping a battery up while using lights and such,
or for boosting another vehicle off.

Now fuel injection is what I was glad to see, especially on equipment that isn't used everyday.

Lots to catch up on, folks been busy


27F this morning, frosty outside, nice warm stove inside.

Worked on the stove Friday night, on and off all day Saturday, ready to order parts on Sunday, but decided I would verify first. We changed the pilot assembly (includes thermopile, thermocouple, igniter and pilot burner) out just over a year ago due to thermostat not able to control stove. This problem is not that as we have plenty on millivolts on that circuit so I put the old part back in and stove works great. I get another thermocouple to have as spare. Good news is I took most of the stove apart and cleaned the blower assembly and lubed it (past due).

Wife is getting better, slower than I would like. My congestion is less, and good news, even when my back hurts really bad, I know that exercise on total gym and ice pack will fix it in a day or two at most.

Have a 2008 ram 2500 bought new . First year stayed in the shop 17 different times but I refused to give up. Lost alt of time but no money. The last time they fixed it was the charm we still use it today 276000 miles and still going strong. Still gets 20 mpg still in very good shape. My manager drives it every day

If you have "Find My" activated on the iPhone, Drew, you can use an iCloud web page to give you a pretty good idea of where to look.

I mostly agree, Lou. The "chokes" on my motorcycles actually meter additional fuel into the engine for starting, and once set up properly, work very well. The fuel injected engine on the van, from Subaru, is another story entirely, as it depends on temperature and mass air flow sensors, and lord knows what else, to set the width of the injector on pulse and calculate how much air should be leaked into the engine at idle.

I've not had good experience letting fuel injected engines sit for long periods of time, either. More than once I've had to pull the injectors out and give them a bath in the hot ultrasound tank to get them to flow fuel again. With a carb, you can shut the fuel line off and let the engine run until it stalls, then drop the float bowl and empty it so there is no fuel anywhere to evaporate and leave clogging deposits.

Seems like the innovators of many of these modern conveniences spend little time considering the "what ifs" related to the system they're tinkering with. And in a modern engine, those systems interact to the point that the results are, as Drew is finding out, somewhat unpredictable. Now throw a computer or ten into the mix, and you not only have hardware that can malfunction, but logic errors in the software as well. Murphy rules the day!

Got a late jump into the GM thread today ... seeing as it's 3:43pm here now.

Weekend evaporated before I knew what was happening. Seems like I started three or four projects, and finished exactly none of them.

Company Xmas party was Saturday evening. That was a pretty good time.

Walked out to close the chicken coop last night and was met by Pepe just in front of the barn, digging around in the mole tunnels. We'd been seeing some small holes here and there over the past few days, but wrote it off as squirrels. The weekly review of the game cams in and around the barn on Saturday morning revealed it was, in fact, a couple of skunks. Well, one was busy working on the evening meal last night, and in spite of my foot stomping, yelling, and flashlight wiggling, he seemed uninterested in my chore. I started to go back to the house for a gun, but talked myself out of it as I realized the wind would blow his last great act of defiance right into the coop and barn. So, he gets to live until I can get a live trap set where I can drag it to the pasture to ventilate him.

Kind of hoping he gets that infernal mole before that happens, though.

I found out my pre admission swab showed traces of staph so I have to get antibiotic swabs to use for three days before the procedure. Nurse said it was common and no big deal. It’s never a big deal if it is not you. LOL
